    Great teaching Shea! She'll probably take over as head coach when Geno retires.

    This is solid basic instruction for individual defense. I really like the way coach communicates with players. Continuous positive instruction and feedback. Very good coaching.

    Disagree with the square to the offensive player. I have always been taught that you take strong hand away especially in today's game when so few players finish with weak hand. Love the you wan the ball mirrored with a hand but square to offensive player sets you up to be beat either way which makes it tougher to recover.

      Plus mirror hand has to switch based on ball position. Not locked in to one hand

    Can someone help me understand this. I am puzzled by her points about where the hands should be. First she says one hand should be up towards the face of the offensive player and that the other hand would be in the passing lane. Then she says one hand should mirror the ball. So the questions is which hand does what? I assumed the hands would move as the ball moved. So, if my right hand is in his face, then my left hand is in the passing lane since the ball is likely on his right hip. However, in the video the first girls she works with used her right hand to mirror the ball even has he sweeps it left and then pulls it back right on an inside pivot. Why wouldn't the player just sweep hard to his left. I love the concepts, the drill, and the intensity. But there are some gaps in the details and in the whys.

      Good point. Either it´s face or it´s ball, can´t be both.

      She meant before they dribble mirror the ball, but when they start to dribble then you keep the hand in their face. The point is when the player isn't dribbling, your hand is following the ball in case they try to pass or shoot, which both can be deflected if you mirror the ball. When the player dribbles, the hand in the face obstructs the vision so they cant see the play happening.

      I always teach my players to mirror the ball with one hand and have the other hand high. Then put a hand in their face when they attempt to shoot.

  • @walterschauseil8244

    TERRIBLE. Shouldnt be hopping around before hand. You want to try to stance to take away angles depending on the players tendencies and abilities and where the defense is shaded. Also people need to treat defense more like a corner back position where you have a read step. Not just random hopping around. They end up putting themselves way out of position in their first movement or two and then from there are at the will of the offensive player. Read step then attack

      Let me also say that chasing the ball around with your hand is an easy way to get a foul. Just hand down man down obviously and then some other principles on stealing from coming underneath the ball and dribble and then make passes hard. But you cant hand check anymore and players are great at getting swiping fouls now. Also having an arm extended straight out will put you off balance to move laterally which is your biggest concern

    • @ericthomson9198
      @ericthomson9198 5 лет назад +13

      "chasing the ball around w/ your hand?" lol. Arm length away, when the ball moves, your hand moves, when the ball handler dribbles, you keep arm distance which eliminates "hand checking." Not sure if you were watching the same video as me but I didn't see one hand check. It is a pretty basic concept and seems to be pretty successful. The hopping promotes ready movement, if you keep your feet in place you have to load to move, (which she said during the demo), the "happy" feet helps eliminate some of the loading to move in one direction or the other...but what would UCONN know about defending, they've only lost twice in the last 6 years.
