  • This video is all about intraocular pressure and why it's so important that your optometrist checks it. Eye pressure (or IOP) is one of the values we look at when determining someone's risk for developing glaucoma. A glaucoma diagnosis is only made after several different test results have been taken into consideration, but intraocular pressure measurement which indicates high eye pressure is definitely one of the key indicators we look at when diagnosing glaucoma.

    Hi Dr. D, I don’t know if you’ll see this but I would greatly appreciate a response! I’m 25, no family history of glaucoma, pretty nearsighted, and have tested normal on all other ocular tests they perform for glaucoma (wish I knew the names for them all..) and my cornea is slightly on the thick side. My pressure however has been reading “high” according to my current doctor, so she’s had me on different kinds of prostaglandin drops for 3 months (we kept switching), none of the different kinds have worked, only lowered by a couple points. She had tested me at my last appointment at pressure being 23. I went to another doctor out of curiosity, they tested it at 18. I went back to the original doctor today, told her they got 18, she said that still wasn’t low enough and she wants it at 16. Her reading today was 21. She prescribed me a different kind of drop (brimonidine) that seems to have a ton of possible side effects that really scare me. I’ve otherwise had no other eye problems besides having to wear contacts and glasses and I really would not like to experience severe side effects… I’m considering switching to the other doctor who said they would just monitor for now. What are your thoughts? I just don’t see, without any other risk factors, why I should be spending money on drops every month and risking the side effects unless this is super serious,.. is it serious?

    Ma case: I'm 48. Last year had 3 month bupropione for smoking cessation. Went to optometrist because my eyes where funny dry irritated after this meds and like " popping out , tense" . My eye pressure was L 18R 19. Stopped bupropione done full glaucoma test . All fine. Optic nerve ideal angles fine. This year I went on bupropione again. 1 month and same situation. Dry itchy tense eyes. Checked with optometrist: L 19 R 21 ( border line) . Should I continue bupropione or it shows clearly it mess up my eyes 👀 and take me towards glaucoma?( optic nerve is fine all fine again) Question: Can ocular pressure change temporarily during medication and come back to normal after? And how big can be daily fluctuations? 5- 6 Mhg? Or more. Perhaps my Pressure is higher and they catched it only in low digits? ( I guess it will require 24h monitoring?)

    Can long stay in front of the computer screen increase the intraocular pressure?

    • @korneliachmielewska1394
      @korneliachmielewska1394 2 года назад +1

      Probably not, it normally increases due to a liquid inside the eye not being able to sufficiently drain and replace as it should. I don't think an external factor like that would make a difference. Computers normally are not the devil ,its the luck of blinking when focusing and the fact that eyes are converging for long time on a close object so they can feel strained.
