Hi Emily! Thank you for watching! I have one more I started on for the operating room. Would love to hear ideas for future glimpses into my day to day that you’d like to see!
Hi Dr. Xi, I just found your channel and I love your videos! I'm a US MD student interested in pediatric critical care. Do you feel like as an intensivist you have time for family and self care? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! The reality is that in all medical specialties, you have to prioritize things and make sacrifices in order to make the life you want. Sometimes you won't be able to have time for family and self-care. Other times you can. I picked a job that was more flexible so I can make sure to honor my priorities. I think it'll be important to ask pediatric intensivists their opinion; all types of critical care are a bit different in their practice! Hope this helps!
Hey Doc- very nontraditional ( retired Army Medic) just accepted to med school. Very much interested in following your career path, although based on my past skill set and interest I may decided on Full Time CCM . Is it likely to find a FT CC- Anesthesiologist position that doesn't have a 7 on 7 off schedule. I don't mind nights at all. Thx!
What's that device when you have to spell your name? And what about morning report? Because you mentioned that your shift ends at 7 am and go home afterwards. In my practice as general physician in icu, we start at 8.30pm and end our shift at 9-10pm including morning report for 1-1.5 hours (HATE IT! 😂) Thank your for making this video and allow us to get a glimpse of how your workflow there at MGH
We use Vocera in the operating room and I tend to bring it with me to the ICU since I know all of the residents also have one. It's like a walkie-talkie! I know all of our residents have one, so I ask them to bring it with them to the ICU so when we have to do emergency airways it's easier to communicate [especially in COVID intubations]. We don't have a morning report - I vaguely remember having a structure like that when I was in the MICU as an intern. Our admissions overnight are "staffed" with me, so the overnight residents do not stay to present them to the day time attending like in the medical ICU. Thanks for watching!
On an overnight shift after we have finished rounds and I've followed up on any critical patients, I may go to the call room to try to nap. Generally I get called to go to emergency airways or if we get an admission of a very sick patient that needs attention, so napping tends to be limited, but every once in a while, there are no emergency airways or very stable admissions. These naps are *not* protected [meaning, someone else is NOT covering my unit; I'm still responsible], so it's not time that I can rely on having every time I'm on an ICU night shift. Hope this answers your question!
Hi Janessa! I graduated with a biomedical engineering degree, but actually started at a liberal arts college and transferred into engineering after 2 years.
Thanks a million for making this vlog even after a looooong shift! Take care, doc Amanda!
Thank you for watching! It was actually a lot of fun to make - a bit more creative than my earlier videos!
Hi Dr. Xi :) These are my favorite types of videos!

When you get the opportunity to nap during an ICU shift? How long are they? Just curious!
