The legacy of kain is personally I consider the video game to have the best story-line ever. It is probably the only story-line from a video game that has kept me puzzled in understanding it. perfect analysis brother ! i didn't do researches yet ! but from my personal gameplay, and from the dialogues in the game, i believe it tackles religion on a big scale !
tarek baziz probably, but there's a lot of support for Gnosticism. Gnosticism describes a collection of ancient religions whose adherents shunned the material world created by the demiurge and embraced the spiritual world. In Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2, Amy Hennig identified "the question of free will in a universe apparently ruled by fate" as the core of the story. Gnosticism, in which "the material world is an illusion, a lie perpetrated by a false and malignant god whose aim is to keep the human soul in darkness and ignorance" and the hero's goal is "knowledge, enlightenment, and the exposure of the truth", helped to formulate Raziel's arc
Milos Vukelic just amazing !! that scene when raziel discovered he was a sarafan along with his brothers before the transition kain did to them !! hmmm...now i'll have to do my own research...this is more than just a game bro !
tarek baziz Do you know Raziel draws inspiration from Joseph Campbell's ideas ? He is a famous mythologist and his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces is George's Lucas biggest inspiration for Star Wars.
Literally fell in love with Raziel when I saw a screenshot of this game on the back of a PlayStation magazine. I made up a story in my head that he was some sort of prince. A few years later, I'm shopping at HEB with my mom and in the toy aisle, there is a Raziel action figure. I convince my mom to buy me the figure and also one of Kain. I loved them so much (And she loved me so much) that she bought me 2 of each over time. One set that I could play with, one set that's still in the box. One day at the local video/game rental place, I happened to notice the titles of one of the series, "Legacy of Rain". Turns out it was BO2, but over time I found my way to this game and it has been my favorite ever since.
I listen to Ozar Midrashim everyday since the first time I heard it in Soul Reaver 1. The series were flawless, the intense story, puzzles, Shakespearean level of dialogues, the music was just epic, I won't ever encounter anything like this, I apologize for my language but these games gave me wood, Ever since i was a child I dreamed of seeing a movie based on these games (thought in my opinion only hardcore fans can be great directors to make a movie like this) since most of game-based films are rubbish.
Lew Hadasz Amen brother, Nosgoth was a rival to the Middle Earth, no doubt, and it's coming from a die hard Lotr fan:) Too bad Nosgoth(the game) is utter rubbish :( Such a great franchise killed without mercy...
NameyStuff Exactly what I was going for, Uwe Boll murdered BloodRayne, and trust me there are idiots of the same caliber who could butcher LegacyOfKain. If they gave me money id direct a movie without going away from canon, look at Peter Jackson he did he's research and made a flawless film. Thought he almost made aragorn fight sauron at the black gate, which would have been retarded.
Oh how I miss Nosgoth. It was such a wonderful place. It had such a wonderful rich and dark atmosphere that provided more than enough fertile ground for such equally dark tales. Oh well, maybe one day I'll see those pillars on the horizon again... someday.
You just can`t imagine Legacy of Kain without its soundtrack. It just doesn`t hold together. Is just as if the whole soundtrack made the whole world of nosgoth "real". It gives it his life, or death. Which is just amazing and something videogames today still struggle to achieve.
Yeah, aside from maybe few famous tunes from the most famous video games, there are really no soundtrack that just makes u say "Oh crap this is from {.... }game!" unlike anything LoK related
This was an awesome soundtrack. Fill of muted primitive percussion, descending echoes, tense chords and mournful harmonies. Perfectly describes an odyssey through an undead underworld.
I disagree, as a fan for over 15 years, all we need is a sequel, a remake if successful, would encourage them to do this, we are already full of good remasters made by fans
The golden era of videogames... so many good fucking games, the first playstation is the best console of all times in my opinion. Legacy Of Kain, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Legend Of Dragoon, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tekken and the list goes on and on! Back then developers had more passion, nowadays all they care is making money... almost all the games on the PS1 were masterpieces.
Patrick Lunardi I'm so proud that my childhood was in this golden era of gaming.I played alot of games but I will always remember Soul Reaver as a best game ever created.Todays games is all about the graphics,no quality.Still keep my collection of all good old games
All around the world fans are dying to return to Nosgoth once again with a new game (in 1080p) that continues where the last one finished. This stunning series deserves a better ending, an epic ending!
DarkSpirit Yoobi Funfact: It's actually just the Multiplayer Part of an originally bigger game called Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun. However the game was cancelled by the publishers and the Multiplayer Portion given to another studio (Psyonix) who salvaged it into the Nosgoth game we have now. :)
So much hard work and passion went into this game. It was interesting from A to Z. The puzzles kept me busy in the best ways possible ! being an angel of death has never been this cool....the good old days of gaming... today's games can only be compared to star wars the phantom menace and Jar Jar binks.
Did you play Star Wars the phantom menace ? Haha it was good game, really big scenarios, and a lot of dialogues, not the best graphics though. But I enjoyed a lot when a was a kid.
Hey, phantom menace was a nice enough movie. The writing was great even, in regards to World building... But Jar Jar was an annoying travesty I'll admit...
Look I will admit Phantom Menace is nostsalgic (grew up with this) and there are some really nice moments. Except for a few things that I do not like, I do appreciate what Lucas did with the prequels. The dual with obi/Jin vs maul defined the modern Star wars. I just wanted the tone of the Phantom Menace to be a bit more serious and aimed towards more mature themes.
@@torbenfranke1859 lol that's the thing I never understood. Episode one was geared to a much younger audience as you said. Now we get to episode 2 and 3 where all kinds of limbs and heads are being chopped off lol. Anakin even force chokes his sweet pregnant wife. After killing younglings. The biggest issue was the tone, target audience and lack of a clear protagonist. Obiwan should have been the main protagonist throughout 1 to 3. The fall of Anakin through the eyes of his teacher, friend and father figure makes the journey more emotional.

"Kain is deified. The Clans tell tales of Him. Few know the truth. He was mortal once, as were we all. However, His contempt for humanity drove him to create me, and my brethren." 22 years later and I still remember every word to that opening sequence. Aside from King's Field II, few games had the atmosphere of Soul Reaver. Necropolis is so iconic for me. I can still hear the sound of the spears piercing the vampires and their groans. Fucking love this game.
It never got finished so it can never die, trapped for eternity to never be fulfilled. I couldn't imagine anything more deserving and defining for the series. Is it better for a franchise to die on the vine or be rewritten to fit a modern audience?
Nice dark and gothique atmosphere, charismatic characters, soundtrack adapted to immersion in the various levels and and boss fights... Beauty of a complex scenario ! i have never play has such a game, many yers later... The entire Legacy of Kain series is my passion. Raziel and Nosgoth redefined my character to include my perspective in life. I have this weird feeling of happines when I'm alone. I kinda like the series ended with no conclusion, it makes me feel that Raziel is still here lurking around us searching for answers...
I never felt like playing the Soul Reaver games. Until yesterday, when I bought the first game on gog for 1€. FUCK I was so wrong. The game is so epic it brings tears to my eyes. (Well almost :D)
Oh God... If I were to live to the ages of 150, i'd still say, this is one of those most epic journey's of discovery imagined and created by mankind. -> Silicon Knight's truly... There is a lot of epic fiction out there, but few like it though. Or best said, none... As a vampire fiction it is entirely unique. As a fantasy setting it is unique. Quintessentially a gem..
So many lost gems like this one will never again be recreated for they are now lost to a generation that knows nothing of them. I miss this game a lot.
“Given the choice, whether to rule a corrupt and failing empire; or to challenge the fates for another throw - a better throw - against one's destiny... what was a king to do? But does one even truly have a choice? One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars.”
I think they cant/want make legacy of kain great again. It was series for connoisseurs most people dont know about it. It so hard to release new game better then masterpiece like soul riever 1. Even if theymade this game there is not much chance that creating her will earn on yourself. Now developers want make games for friendly for everyone to earn maximum profit (like they try with new legacy of kain game who was cancelled) and thats how developers are killing their greatest game brands .
Exactly Mikele, I've just started to write a storyline for a new game and have a few people who want to focus on "reaching the most people". The focus can't be about money. The greats (like the original star wars) never worried about putting shitty characters in there like jarjardinks just to appease a certain age group and destroy the franchise. I think all of my media favorites (game/video) follow that rule.
"Ishkokum mes mos of she'res..." Still one of my favorite games, hands down. I am saddened that many have found it lost in time, but Raziel and Kain deserve a remastered! I would love to see this game in modern graphics, with this same soundtrack. The gothic atmosphere, the dialogue, and the sheer darkness of this universe was such a great concept. Thank you +Alex Masters for posting!
We want a reboot? Yes, but do we really want a ESRB "E" title? Hell NO. Make it dark, bloody, chilling like real Vampires supposed to be, like it was in Legacy of Kain:Soul Reaver.I can only imagine this game now with Dark Souls graphics.Probably would be the first game I would pay a full 50 bucks in a good while.
I don't even want a reboot, just remake the games (including LoK BO1) with modern graphics and gameplay combat mechanics but keeping the story and level design... maybe slight changes to that Raziel can glide like Batman does in Arkham City...
I miss this game. I used to listen to its soundtrack religiously. I think, if this game was to be remade, I think the people who made the Darksiders games should do it. I can think of no company that could do it better. Im sure they would give it the proper respect it continues to deserve. This game is a legend in its own right, being also among the first games to function without a loading screen during the PS1 Era.
Just come back after a long old while to give this thing a listen. It reminds me of the days I used to get completely lost in videogames, this being a major player. The cathedral music still sends a chill up my spine, just as tunes like ruined city fill me once again with intrigue. What a perfect score. I worry a little if I play the game it won't live up to my last playthrough, I remember thinking the world was pretty sizable but always wanting more, but in a time where the possibilities seem almost endless, this is still a thing of beauty. What a game!
Overtime we became less human and...more divine, Kain would enter the state of change and emerge with a new gift. Some years after the master our evolution would follown, until I have the honour of surpassing my Lord!
@theunbearableman I will say: The game mechanics of that genre would translate pretty well to updating LOK and Soul Reaver into the modern era. Keep the core of the original mechanics (puzzles, world shifting, etc) and just give it a modern shine... i'd buy it twice. The original games weren't easy or forgiving, but they were beatable; so a "dark souls-like game" might work out well. Think of Darksiders 3's difficulty. That's palatable to someone like me who loves the story but doesn't want to have to git gud to see it through.
I see nothing but love on this video and it makes me happy that there are other people out there whom enjoy this master piece of a game. I've been saying it needs a remaster for years and updated graphics! It would truly be amazing to see my all time favorite game come to the new era. Hopefully 2019, September 8th will be the day it happens since it'll be twenty years!
Fun Fact: the first track, Ozar Midrashim, is a licensed track from Information Society, the guys who did Wanna Know What You're Thinking (Pure Energy) back in 88. You've probably heard it at some point on the radio and never knew who it was.
This was one magnificent masterpiece. A big, epic story in every game and one even bigger in the series. Great conclusion. Most games don't have this nowadays. They just make a story and leave some gap open for a sequel or just leave you unsatisfied with the ending, but these games made you cry for a new add-on and still had the balls to finish a storyline completely.
Lok games were portals to other worlds and the music greatly contributed to that! So many dedicated fans and after so many years. How can they not make a sequel?
Thank god for emulators, because now the ps1 emu I can finally play all these ps1 classics, this game legendary a wonder for it's generation, the gameplay was truly ahead of it's time free roam 3D with no load times, combat was fantastic still is, the villains were awesome and you have to get creative to your enemies, legendary soundtrack, and some of the greatest dialogue and voice acting in gaming history the characters never felt like robots they had depth and emotion.

I was never able to beat this game. I played when I was like 4 or 5 years old. Something always felt special about this game. I didn't freakin' understand the plot and I got stuck right before Melchiah. Years later I played Soul Reaver 2 on PS2 and my dad returned it because he hated the slowness of the cutscenes and thought it was SOO boring. Fast forward to my teens and I buy them both for my self again. I was still having a hard time figuring out what to do but I finally beat them. To say the least, it's impressive how much detail they put into the lore of this world. In the first Soul Reaver when you first get introduced to the fast travel system, Raziel explains it so eloquently! As a child I wasn't even aware of fast travel systems in games so how could I possibly understand the purpose of those portals in the way they're introduced?! 🤣 Just wow! Even fast traveling is a purposeful thing! It's a shame the fourth game got canceled. It was looking really good. They had all of the Eidos devs working on it and then traded that project in favor for the online PvP game. I hope this series somehow continues in the future.

Lew Hadasz
Amen brother, Nosgoth was a rival to the Middle Earth, no doubt, and it's coming from a die hard Lotr fan:) Too bad Nosgoth(the game) is utter rubbish :( Such a great franchise killed without mercy...
NameyStuff
Exactly what I was going for, Uwe Boll murdered BloodRayne, and trust me there are idiots of the same caliber who could butcher LegacyOfKain. If they gave me money id direct a movie without going away from canon, look at Peter Jackson he did he's research and made a flawless film. Thought he almost made aragorn fight sauron at the black gate, which would have been retarded.
NameyStuff
Yeah the Elder gods is still alive, yet he also isn't....
R.I.P Tony Jay
+Ilja Sidlun I cry man T_T
+Ilja Sidlun Amy Hennig would make the only good director of any adaptation. She was the soul behind the series.
+Alexander Dragonfang I couldn't agree more
+Alexander Dragonfang
Agreed, that and the almost poetic dialogue.
+Alexander Dragonfang the habitants of Nosgoth was on the music :)
Yeah, aside from maybe few famous tunes from the most famous video games, there are really no soundtrack that just makes u say "Oh crap this is from {.... }game!" unlike anything LoK related
I THINK of this game and immediately hear that gamelan sample at 5:11
Please remake without messing with the ost or voice acting
Fuckin A
one of the greatest series ever, the very beginning of stellar voice overs and amounting to a wholesome plot that would spark almost a decade of lore.
This was an awesome soundtrack. Fill of muted primitive percussion, descending echoes, tense chords and mournful harmonies. Perfectly describes an odyssey through an undead underworld.
I loved how this game didn't have any loading screens when going from place to place at the time. It gave it that open world feeling.
Not a remake. Make a remastered version.
I disagree, as a fan for over 15 years, all we need is a sequel, a remake if successful, would encourage them to do this, we are already full of good remasters made by fans
@@Galois-88 Remake FFVII Rebirth style is the only justice for a game of this caliber
Remastered guys, offical now :D
Guess what it’s officially happening now!
A remastered game is usually better because it's closer to the original
The golden era of videogames... so many good fucking games, the first playstation is the best console of all times in my opinion. Legacy Of Kain, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Legend Of Dragoon, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tekken and the list goes on and on! Back then developers had more passion, nowadays all they care is making money... almost all the games on the PS1 were masterpieces.
dino crisis, silent hill, metal gear, alone in the dark, rayman, pepsi man...
MikeManiac I was about to say, Alone in the Dark was awesome!
Patrick Lunardi Tenchu, Syphon Filter, Gran Turismo...
Patrick Lunardi I'm so proud that my childhood was in this golden era of gaming.I played alot of games but I will always remember Soul Reaver as a best game ever created.Todays games is all about the graphics,no quality.Still keep my collection of all good old games
Adding Oddworld to this amazing list
I still have all my Legacy of kain games. I think a game marathon is long over due, better start stocking up supplies and tell my relatives goodbye
I'm nerding out right now.. LOK Soul Reaver is a story that needs to be retold.
All around the world fans are dying to return to Nosgoth once again with a new game (in 1080p) that continues where the last one finished. This stunning series deserves a better ending, an epic ending!
It might happen, considering we did get a new game set in the LoK world just called Nosgoth.
@@eXxaric I can understand that aspect. Lucas very much geared the prequel to be marketed to kids. 😅
Enamorado de este juegazo. Excelente banda sonora, acorde a semejante obra de arte
estoy deacuerdo hermano

"Kain is deified. The Clans tell tales of Him. Few know the truth. He was mortal once, as were we all. However, His contempt for humanity drove him to create me, and my brethren."
22 years later and I still remember every word to that opening sequence. Aside from King's Field II, few games had the atmosphere of Soul Reaver. Necropolis is so iconic for me. I can still hear the sound of the spears piercing the vampires and their groans. Fucking love this game.
2020... time passes by but Soul Reaver remains, immortal masterpiece
Kain the real vampire: underworld, angel, buffy, vampire diaries and others stories can just kneel down , "vae victis" :)
The best game from one of the best franchises I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
I still melt when I hear this sound track. The beat, drums the tribe feel. The gothic in it.
Ozar Midrashim is the most haunting and captivating soundtracks of any game.
The main theme gives me goosebumps! It was 2003 when I played it first...good old days! Thanks for the upload!
And I really miss solving those puzzles!

Ruined City Danger is a masterpiece soundtrack.
I never felt like playing the Soul Reaver games. Until yesterday, when I bought the first game on gog for 1€. FUCK I was so wrong. The game is so epic it brings tears to my eyes. (Well almost :D)
i get you lol...
its so much epicness you cant handle lol...
I think you would really like all the LOK games
I have them all and they are Awesome :)
Even the audio is so unique. I have never heard anything like it
This series was a huge part of my childhood. Its a huge part of my adulthood as well. Long live the Legacy of Kain.
Still coming back for more. I'm surprised there isn't more views honestly.
I warn you brother, as my stature has grown, so is it matched by my appetite. Step forward, mussel!
One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars.”
the best game franchise EVER..!!!!
And to think it's dead while the story isn't over yet...
Agree and they need to bring it back!
Btw remaster is the best and safest option for success. But we really want same shit after years in better graphic?
Exactly Mikele, I've just started to write a storyline for a new game and have a few people who want to focus on "reaching the most people". The focus can't be about money. The greats (like the original star wars) never worried about putting shitty characters in there like jarjardinks just to appease a certain age group and destroy the franchise. I think all of my media favorites (game/video) follow that rule.
"Ishkokum mes mos of she'res..."
Still one of my favorite games, hands down.
This game was always like a fever dream to me, the soundtrack, the SFX, and the plot were just different from anything I ever played, even now.
Still 2022 and waiting for remake or remastered.
It would be nice from the same studio as diablo 2 resurected. Game nailed it.
9:05
I've hummed the first few seconds of this song at least once a week for the passed 20 years.
I don't even want a reboot, just remake the games (including LoK BO1) with modern graphics and gameplay combat mechanics but keeping the story and level design... maybe slight changes to that Raziel can glide like Batman does in Arkham City...
a reboot in PC era would tarnish what reputation the series had we need a true definite ending as elder god is still alive
A game with fight mexhanics like Spiderman or Batman's Arkam series or God of War 4
All this amazing music taking me back to a time when life was simpler...less depressing.
Why in the hell this game doesn’t have a remake or something. Or a saga with today’s graphic design and technology. THIS GAME IS PURE AWESOMENESS.
Still here in 2022 - still waiting for a remake.
how i miss this atmosphere in a game, so dark, so serious, old times.., the best
Soul Reaver my favorite license ever :) Make us a remaster please..

Kain is deified. The clans tell tales of him, few know the truth. He was mortal once, as were we all.
how ever his attempt for Humanity drove him to create me and my brethren
I am Raziel, first-born of his lieutenants. I stood with Kain and my brethren
at the dawn of the empire. I have served him a millennium.
Overtime we became less human and...more divine, Kain would enter the state of change and emerge with a new gift. Some years after the master our evolution would follown, until I have the honour of surpassing my Lord!
for my transgression i earned a new kind of reward agony!!

That's palatable to someone like me who loves the story but doesn't want to have to git gud to see it through.
in 2021, we are still waiting for the remake :(
Amazing soundtrack,
Strong characters,
Gripping, diabolical story,
Miss much...
The intro song is amazing, this game is so well done, better than most of the new generation games
Fun Fact: the first track, Ozar Midrashim, is a licensed track from Information Society, the guys who did Wanna Know What You're Thinking (Pure Energy) back in 88. You've probably heard it at some point on the radio and never knew who it was.
a great game, nice soundtracks, history and the best are the puzzles that both cost
One of the best sound tracks in gaming. Panzer Dragoon, Zelda, Mario, Deus Ex, Sonic, Metroid, GTA... it hangs with the best of them.
Please God a remake before i die!
This was one magnificent masterpiece. A big, epic story in every game and one even bigger in the series. Great conclusion. Most games don't have this nowadays. They just make a story and leave some gap open for a sequel or just leave you unsatisfied with the ending, but these games made you cry for a new add-on and still had the balls to finish a storyline completely.
first song is epic :3
it's true bro :')
Snakebigboss88 soul Reaver is a great game about a tragic hero and anti hero
The only thing I'd cut is that fucking wilhelm scream.
Lok games were portals to other worlds and the music greatly contributed to that! So many dedicated fans and after so many years. How can they not make a sequel?
Cause they're milking Tomb Raider's tits instead!
Thank god for emulators, because now the ps1 emu I can finally play all these ps1 classics, this game legendary a wonder for it's generation, the gameplay was truly ahead of it's time free roam 3D with no load times, combat was fantastic still is, the villains were awesome and you have to get creative to your enemies, legendary soundtrack, and some of the greatest dialogue and voice acting in gaming history the characters never felt like robots they had depth and emotion.
this series is also available for PC :v

EPIC GAME, fan forever...
Ozar Midrashim & Necropolis Combat. Instant adrenalin beamed into my brain straight from my childhood. 25 years later I still return to this awesomeness regularly.
I love the mythos of this series, and the metaphor of life and existence it discusses.
This will stick with me to the end.
This is the best soundtrack of the entire series!
Still here in 2022 waiting for a remake!!!!!
