Oh my goodness, I watched your one from last year a couple months ago to convince my partner to do this as we are currently raising our shed roof (more head room and less of an incline) ... I remember thinking I wished there was an update from it! Your first video convinced him we could DIY it BTW, and we will shortly start working on turning our shed roof green! Thank you for wonderful inspiration and information 🌱🌿 😁

Thank you for your kind words. It's probably one of the nicest comments 🥰🥰🥰. I am delighted to hear that you got some inspiration from the video. It genuinely is one of the coolest projects to do 💚🌱🌿 Best of luck with the build, hopefully by the end of August we'll have the hens' coop new green roof build, so you can check for updates 🤞 Best wishes, Maiju

Your roof is lovely, it inspired me to make one on my log store. I get a lot of bother with vine weevil in my containers so I'll not plant saxifrage on my roof, nasty little creatures 🙄

That's a great idea to build one over a log store 👏 bin storage etc as they've got great potential for wildlife and give you joy too 😀💚 main priority is to protect the structure integrity underneath (ie waterproofing) The saxifrage is a real pity indeed as they are gorgeous little dainty flowers, great colour choice and lovely foliage. I think it's biggest weakness against vine weevil 🤢 is the way it grows into a big mound and its not creeping, so when the roots underneath get severed by the weevil it's not able to shoot new roots out and it fully dries off 😢 Thank you for your lovely comment and wishing you all the best for your build 💚🌱🌿

Thank you for sharing your experience and informaton.
6:16 is the black hose beside the edge a water hose ? How do you use it ? Thank you. I've seen quite a lot videos about DIY green roof but rarely saw info about irriation.

Hi and thank you for your query 😊💚🌿
I think what might come across as a black water hose is the curled up edge of the weed membrane.
We do not have any irrigation for the roof, and you would not need it if you are using sedums as the main collection of plants. Sedums by nature keep water in their leaves and stems to use during dry spells.
I have used overhead spray during extreme heat spells in here, but we do not get many in the West of Ireland.
Ideally you would not need to rely on any extra watering as the green roof is designed to be self-sufficient, except for weeding....there's always weeding 😂 I hope this helps 😊💚🌿

Ah, yes, I see it now, curled up membrane.
Thank you very much for your reply and detailed explanation. 🙏🏻

This is so inspirational! I'm copying your plans over in Washington state, USA. Do you know what the roof's pitch is? Thank you, and keep on sending us inspiration :)

Thank you, so very kind of you 😊💚💚💚 You probably get very cold winters as regular up there? You need the toughest of Sedums then-sempervivum and stonecrop mixes. Our shed roof pitch is probably around 15°. We always go as flat as possible as it gives more cover space and don't have to waste materials to build a full A frame roof. Also the flatter it is, the easier it will be to walk on it for maintenance. We're after finishing similar build on the hen coop run, have to add the new green roof still. Thank you again for this lovely comment 💚

@@spudsandroses Ah, such a quick reply! Thank you! Your pitch might be called 4/12 here, and if we go 5/12, for a bit more visibility and the look we'd like, with heavy timber framing, it would be 18.25 degrees. Do you have thoughts about that? I'm in a rainy climate, fairly close to the coast, with some freezing temps and snow, but mainly just rainy winters. Kiitos paljon (I'm and American Finn who has lived in Finland with my late Finnish husband). So, your neighbor to the north!

@@paulines3732 Hei 👋 That's amazing, you've lived in Finland. I'm named Maiju because our family had close friends in Vaasa when I was born 😍. There's no problem with having a more severe slope on the roof, once you support/contain your growing medium and once the plants get established, the roots will create a dense mat anyway. Main thing is that you get your drainage through the planting and away from the roof structure 💚💚

So nice to get your input! And you have a nice name, with a sweet story! I was sure you were a Finn, also with your nice accent :) My lovely patio cover (timber frame) is being built at this moment, and we decided on the 15 degree slope. And it looks great!

@@paulines3732 that's great to hear the build is on its way 👏👏😀 I'm an Estonian but because of my name and the spelling of it, even in Estonia sometimes they assume I'm a Finn or a tourist (because of my Irish surname) 😅 especially when it's been an online booking for products or services. I can't hide the accent for sure, it's stuck with me 😊💚
