  • Tawnya Bigger interviews Vince Guerra about the history of roofing. Stone coated metal roofing has an extremely interesting background. During World War 2, the allies needed to keep their airplane hangers camouflaged.
Lou Fisher, native to New Zealand, was deployed to Germany to aid the British. While he was there, his job was to figure out the best way to camouflage the hangers during Blitzkrieg. Airplane hangers were extremely shiny and were easy targets for any bomber flying by. They were made of galvanized steel so he put tar and bitumen mixed with leaves, twigs, sticks and other items that would help blend the buildings in with the surrounding flora.
After the war, he decided to return to Germany to revisit some of the areas that he was stationed at and realized that all of the hangers that had the tar/bitumen mixture with sand, leaves and other coverings, were in pristine condition.
And that is how stone coated metal roofing was born!! I found this little piece of roofing history absolutely amazing!!! I really enjoyed doing this interview and can't wait to learn more roofing history with Vince.

I'm from New Zealand!! And we don't call em shingles lol you said it's called decro, correct but the full name of it is a decromestic tile. It's not a shingle. In New Zealand we use alot of metal Roofing rather than shingles. We concrete tile, decromestic tile, and colorsteel sheets. Have a little shingle houses popping up slowly around the place... but mostly steel Roofing. But yes this is a decromestic tile

We were talking about the company Decra, who makes stone coated shingles/tiles. I’m guessing that’s how they got their company name lol or maybe how the name came to be...chicken or the egg?
