Charmed by the cobra: research on the ecology of Darlingtonia californica by David Armitage
Abstract: The California pitcher plant Darlingtonia californica is a unique member of the Sarraceniaceae in its natural history. It is also a very useful model system for investigating fundamental questions in the fields of ecology and evolution. In this talk, I will introduce you to the ecology of Darlingtonia by first taking you on a tour through the many varied habitats comprising its geographic distribution. Next, I will discuss some of my research on the evolutionary ecology of Darlingtonia, including studies concerning the species' adaptations for prey capture as well as the composition and functioning of its microbiome. I will finally outline some ongoing work in my research group concerning the mutualistic interactions in which Darlingtonia engages with arthropods and networks of gene flow over its geographic range.
