Part of me still hopes against all odds that a second season will materialize in a few years, but regardless Stay With Me probably went as far as possible to show a romance between males while under the current censorship regime. There were several moments I found genuinely touching and wish other shows would use to learn techniques of building intimacy between characters. Looking forward to more from you both in the future.
Thanks guys, I really enjoyed your recaps. I cried like a baby at the end of this show. 😭 I was wrecked for days. I saw some clips of a cast/crew watch party of the last episode. It was so tense, even the two lead actors were holding hands during it. Again, more crying. I read the novels about 6 months later. Book 1 was pure 🌽 but I could not put it down. More crying. Mo Yi (Gu Yang) is just as bad in the books as he was in the series. I’m so bummed that there won’t be a S2. I hope the Thai adaptation will tell the complete story. I really liked H3:Trapped. But my favorite Taiwanese BL is the recently completed “Unknown”.
Most Chinese bls work really hard to hint at a happy ending because the whole kill your gays thing is one thing writers have to employ to get away with the queer narrative, either that or make it so ambiguous it could be passed off as a “bromance”. Guardian (an earlier Danmei adaptation) changed the ending to be tragic, the untamed made it very ambiguous and separated them for no reason, and Word of honor ended the show in the middle of a scene on purpose to hint that it wasn’t the end, then had an entirely separate “special” ending uploaded later. The most recent BL “spirealm” was able to create a really clear romance and shoe horned in a happy ending after the tragedy even if it was dumb lol, it’s really interesting seeing the different ways writers try and get around it considering censorship is breathing down their neck. (it’s usually the low budget ones that fly under the radar tbh)

Not gonna lie, the second the romance started being presented realtively overtly I knew the end wouldn't be happy. I really do recommend the book, but it is basically an entirely different thing lol. It's the definition of fucked up toxic insanity, think like japenese gay movie levels. It's a good read though, and I'd love a recap if you do read it.
