  • SelecTV was an American subscription television service that was formed in 1976 and first began broadcasting in 1978; the service focused entirely on televising movies, and was shut down in 1989.
As with other subscription television systems, SelecTV was transmitted via scrambled signal from a local UHF television station (it later became a satellite service as well). Unlike its competitors, it originally allowed subscribers to pay only for programs "selected" during the month, with the first several minutes free (the decoder box included a phone hook-up to transmit information back to the billing office); it later switched to a flat fee.

Before Milwaukee got cable TV the only choices you had were SelecTV and TVQ. TVQ I think, used a microwave antenna to let you receive HBO. At that time HBO didn't broadcast until the afternoon during the week and wasn't 24 hours. It did broadcast longer on the weekends. There were some issues with someone protesting TVQ by interrupting the signal proclaiming "American Television should be Free". I had both SelecTV and TVQ in the early 80's. I remember SelecTV showed for a special added price the Kevin Kline movie "The Pirates of Penzance" the same day it was shown in the theaters. I don't think I had a desire to ever watch that movie again. Thanks for your History of SelecTV.
