    To get to the bottom of your issue:
    CMYK is the primary for reflecting colours, as RGB is for lightsources...
    The key here is, pardon the pun... The Key...
    The mix of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow only work as there is a 4th component, Black, otherwise known as Key (hence CMYK).
    As we consider reflecting colours, we base of a white surface (paper for example) and subtract the reflected colours by removing it with pigment. As all pigments will remain reflecting some light, you will never achieve true black, hence the mix CMY is slightly off-colour, and we need to add black, or a "key" to fully darken the tone
    One solution is to use darker base colours, namely Red over Magenta and Blue over Cyan, rendering darker end results which sometimes work out better, hence the confusion.
    At the end of the day we are playing with Colour, which is a mix of Chromaticity (Hue), Saturation and Brightness (Lightness)
    CMYK uses Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to dial in its Chromaticity, Black (Key) is used to dial in its Lightness, altogether they determine saturation
    RGB is more simplistic, as no light means no lightness, so in case of RGB its the mix of colours determining its Hue (Chromaticity) and Saturation.
    Brightness (Lightness) is of course the amount of light output of this mix.
    Note I am using Chromaticity and Lightness for Reflecting colours, and Hue and Brightness for Lightsources, as Lightsources have Hue and Brightness as a property, and Reflecting surfaces have Chromaticity and Lightness as property.
    Hoping this makes sense to you, if anyone has any questions, do let me know and I'll try to answer them for you.

      cmyk does not really require k to work. You can achieve the similar effects with cmy only, depending on how to do your separations. K is more economical and addresses some shortcomings of using cmy for neutrals and blacks, but as with anything brings different shortcomings of its own.

    There are 3 cones in your eyes, cones for long wavelength (red) light, cones for medium (green) wavelength light, and cones for short wavelength (blue) light. RGB is always used in any digital display because it mimics are light sensors and can make almost every color we can see.
    When pigments are used, the colors happen in a different way. Red objects reflect red light and absorb green and blue. (There are other frequencies of light, actually light is a spectrum, but for simplicity I’m only going to talk about red green and blue). Green objects reflect green and absorb red and blue. Yellow objects reflect red and green and absorb blue. So when white light, a mix of all colors, hits these objects, only the color of the object is reflected back to your eyes. When you mix red and blue, the color you get absorbs green light but also some red and blue, so you get a desaturated form of magenta. Some people suggest adding white, but lightening a darkened color does not make it normal because they are not inverses. Adding white makes it reflect more red and blue, but also reflect more green. So it remains desaturated even as the brightness becomes more similar. When you mix magenta and cyan, it absorbs red and green leaving you with a pure blue. Since magenta yellow and cyan are the purest colors that absorb only one of the colors of light, they can be used to make other colors without becoming desaturated.
    Let me know if you have any questions.

      ROAR Gaming Phthalo Blue is a great option for a cyan primary, and Cadmium Yellow is a good yellow, although I would specifically recommend Cadmium Yellow Light (instead of Medium, which might still work, or Deep, which would be too shifted toward orange). For the third, I would recommend Quinacridone Magenta instead of crimson. However, one critical note: be sure the PIGMENT is quinacridone magenta, which is pigment number PR122. I am aware of at least one common brand of acrylic paints that has messed up their names, calling their paint that contains quinacridone magenta pigment (PR122) Quinacridone Violet, and their paint that contains quinacridone violet pigment (PV19) Quinacridone Magenta.

    ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: Color pencils don't always mix well, some colors are too waxy to be colored over, some are too opaque etc. so you need a separate blue for example. But with paints, MYC.
    Use any two to get a full color, add the third to dial back the intensity. All three together give you a rich, solid black. Add titanium white to the paint kit and you got all you need.

    (sometimes we use a combination with rgb and myc in licht fixtures so we can have some better colors or other colors that you can't get with rgb like brown because that's a darker version of orange but you can go darker with light only les lighter)

  • @molybdenum20

    I remember when I was in elementary school and the teacher didn't have any purple paint, so I tried to mix some myself. The red I used only reflected red light, and absorbed most blue and green light, whereas the blue I used only reflected blue light, and absorbed most red and green light. The result? A very muddy purple that I didn't like. At the time, I didn't know about MYC and so kept mixing more red in and blue in, but I could never get it to brighten, and ended up wasting a lot of paint. Years later I learned that printers use Magenta, Yellow, and Cyan, as well as black, and eventually decided to use them in my art. It took a bit for me to wrap my head around, but eventually I learned to control colors more effectively. My only peeve now is that I can't seem to find actual (affordable) paint in those colors, and the 'bright' kind I got was basically mixed with white in the bottle, so I can't get as strong of color as I could using colored pencils, and even colored pencils have their limit.

    Personally, I love the bright colors on CMY. But it depends on what colors you want/need for the specific piece you’re working on. If you’re doing a landscape, you might want more realistic, earthy colors, in which case, RYB might be helpful. I use a combination of both in my watercolor palette.

    In paint, red, yellow, and blue are primary colors.
    The "yellow" color is made from a chemical named Tartanzine, or Yellow 5. In paint, this is called Lemon Yellow.
    The "cyan" color in ink is a chemical named Phthalocyanine (Phthalo). In paint, it is called Phthalo Blue.
    The "magenta" color is a chemical named Quinacridone, or Red #122. In paint, Quinacridone is too dark to be primary. Crimson with Ultramarine can literally make magenta using paint.
    However in ink, Quinacridone is transparent and makes a better primary.

    RGB = primary colors for light
    RYB = primary colors for pigment
    MYC = primary colors for ink
    In the case of colored pencils, the "lead" is usually a blend of pigments and chemicals in a wax or oil base, but some brands make multiple types intended for different purposes (such as watercolor pencils), so the color saturation and the blendability depend heavily on the concentrations of pigment and the base they use. If you're using a mix of the two main types, it could lead to blending issues.

      Additive is when you are mixing lights (like the screen). The cones in human' eye are the most sensitive to the green, red and blue lights. No love for RGB? ;C
    in all seriousness: I'm pretty sure any roughly-equally-spaced trio of colors on the color wheel will work as primaries in the right circumstances.
    also: I expect color-mixing to be more difficult with alternating colored pencils than dye-mixing since they the colored pencils form distinct layers, meaning that the top layers have much more effect than the bottom layers, and the wax may preferentially either coat the peaks of the surface, obscuring the first layer below more than the second layer below, or fill the valleys, obscuring the second layer more than the first.
    similarly: I expect it to be more difficult with markers since when the surface becomes saturated with ink, new ink isn't added as readily.
    lastly: an irritating number of people are calling RGB the primary colors "for light". There are both universal and human aspects to color, and the existence of "primary colors" stem from the human aspects: there are various kinds of light receptors in the human eye, and the responses of nearby receptors are compared to form the perception of color. If the receptors react in the same way, the same color is perceived, regardless of what causes the receptors to react. 565nm light? A mix of 590 and 530nm light? A mix of 590 and 430nm light? excessive Intraocular pressure? "green". It just so happens that various trios of pigments/emitters can reproduce the majority of possible receptor responses. It's nothing special about those pigments or emission spectra. It's something special about the human color receptors.

    I teach my high school students it's because paints and ink work differently than light. So both are sets of primary colors. RYB works perfectly with light, CMY works well with art supplies. Plus Cyan is a version of blue, and magenta is a version of red. The brightness of it though helps with color mixing.

  • @brightonbetoit463
    @brightonbetoit463 6 лет назад +55

    Here's why MYC worked, as far as I know: The color Magenta on paper absorbs any green light that hits it. That only leaves red and blue light, which we perceive to be Magenta. The color Cyan works the same way, absorbing any red light that hits it. Thus, when you layer Magenta on Cyan, it absorbs all green and red light, meaning only blue light gets reflected, so that's what we see.
    Meanwhile, over in RYB, Red marker absorbs green light and blue light, and Blue marker absorbs green light and red light, so when you layer them on top of each other, they absorb red, blue, and a lot of green light. You end up with purple, but a really dark purple.
    As for which is the true primary color: in art school, RYB is the primary set because paints work that way. In printers, MYC is the primary set because they can layer Magenta, Yellow, and Cyan to make the other colors, since that only works with ink. In reality, the true primary set is Red, Green, and Blue, because those are the three colors that our eyes perceive. Every color we see is just a mix of them, and that's why computers and TVs use RGB.

Magenta and cyan are newer words than red and blue, and to be honest, the red used by historical painters was more magenta than what we think of as red, and the blue used was more cyan than what we think of as blue.

    Easy answer! CYMK because you are using pigments. The RGB & CMYK on photoshop are the colour spaces you use. RGB is the colour space used for digital art or photos that are to remain digital - because RGB is for light. CYMK colour space is used for seeing true colour for printing because they are the primaries for printing.
    Photos or digital art will look very different if you swap between the two. I have never been so frustrated watching a Jazza video before LOL! I was silently shouting at my phone use ink for CYM and dont forget the Key!

    RYB is the additive primary set, used most often in pigments. CYM is the subtractive primary set that is used for printing and anything that uses pixels or dots, to create color. At least, that is how I was taught. If you take a magnifying glass and look at a printed image, you will see that most of the colors lay next to each other while small percentages overlay each other and in this way create the solid colors we associate with CYM. RYB however is an actual mixture of pigments. So, both are primary sets for different types of applications.

    Wow... there's a lot of misleading comments. Here’s the thing, screen uses Red, Green and Blue *light* to create almost all the colors human eyes can see. This is what additive medium everyone is talking about. Hence, igital art, photography etc. always uses RGB. There are other color spaces (e.g. YCbCr, HSV), but those ultimately gets converted to RGB for your screen to display.
    CMY is for paints and ink. Because paints absorbs/takes away certain colored lights and reflects the rest. Since it absorbs certain colors, paints are subtractive medium.
    Cyan = reflects Blue and Green, absorbs Red
    Magenta = reflects Blue and Red, absorbs Green
    Yellow = reflects Red and Green, absorbs Blue
    So, if you mix Cyan and Magenta paint, the Cyan pigments will absorb red and Magenta pigments will absorb Green. And both of them will reflect Blue. That's why mixing Cyan and Magenta gives you Blue. It’s that simple.
    The only issue here is that we grew up with the idea that we learnt RGY as primary colors as we were children. So it's hard for us to get out of that superstition. But it’s blatant truth that CMY on a white paper can create any colors we can percieve as humans. It’s time to accept the truth.

    But then you hit the argument that cyan is technically blue, and Magenta could maybe be considered red.
    At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter, since we draw arbitrary lines of what is the same color and what are different colors. Brown is literally just orange without brightness, so depending on the context it’s either brown or orange, etc.

    - Magenta is still in the color family of reds and as far as mixing goes it is the purest form with the most options.
    - Cyan is still in the color family of blues and as far as mixing goes it is the purest form with the most color options.
    So strictly speaking magenta, yellow and cyan is still red, yellow and blue. After all the blue you picked is ultramarine so you may argue that it still Isn't just plain blue. Similar with red in order to distinguish the members of the red family they all have their names and carmine isn't just plain red.
    And strictly speaking Yellow comes in a huge range and each family member has it's own name. Strictly speaking yellow is never just yellow.
    We are talking family.

      Actually, it's impossible to create true Cyan and Magenta with Red, Yellow, and Green. The reason we think Cyan is a blue color is because of language. Just watch the Vsauce2 video on the invention of blue.

    • @silkeschumann7261
      @silkeschumann7261 6 лет назад +4

      In the Ming Dynasty in China manufacturer clearly knew how to produce blue in masses and exported white and blue china to Europe. It isn't a matter of language. The value placed on the color blue may have changed over time and the availability of blue paint definitely has changed but whether cyan is green or blue is more a matter of perception. Since these days we have the ability to produce a wide variety of colors, the need to describe different colors is vital and though cyan is right at the edge to a mint green it is still considered blue. ;)

    • @silkeschumann7261
      @silkeschumann7261 6 лет назад +6

      We are not talking physics but color theory in art. Don't confuse the fields. ;) One is all about color pigments and mixing charts and naming colors to distinguish one from the other and being able to purchase a certain color or tell students about how to mix colors to create bright or muted colors in order to achieve an expression. It is language, psychology, culture, chemistry and yes physics.
      In art you don't ignore culture, which is why depending on the culture in which you grew up you imagine different colors with one color name. And art groups colors where magenta is in the color family of red usually when you buy magenta the primary color it is labeled "primary red".

    • @random4013
      @random4013 6 лет назад +6

      Silke Schümann lol they aren’t two separate fields. Light and pigment are inversely related. With light you start out with darkness (black). Then when you add light you get red, green, and blue since those are the 3 come receptors you have in your eyes. Then when two of three lights are added you get cyan, yellow, and magenta. Finally when all three come receptors are added you get white. With pigment it’s the opposite. You started out with a white price of paper since there is no pigment. Then when you subtract pigment you get cyan, yellow , and magenta. When you mix them two of the three lights are subtracted and you get red, blue, and green. Lastly when all the pigment has been subtracted you get black.

  • @Skystarry75

    Important to note- The traditional color wheel is right for devising color schemes that look good. This is because there is a greater overlap in what wavelengths our red and green cones see compared to the overlap between green and blue.
    So, use your traditional color wheels to pick your color schemes, and use CYMK for the actual pigments you lay down. You'll get nice bright colors, that look good when paired together!

  • @suzt7076

    I watched another video recently on this, and the sticking point for me as a teacher ( cause I feel I should change my teaching to cmy, is that the basic student t paints I buy come in the old primaries… I don’t buy secondaries, I make my students mix everything….and the bottom line is, there are some 5ings they can’t mix. If I could buy cyan and magenta in those basic supplies, they could in theory mix anything.

  • @bigdream_dreambig
    @bigdream_dreambig 6 лет назад +752

    Actually, the idea of primary colors for pigments is flawed. Additive color mixing (that is, of light, like with computer screens) can be perfect from three primary colors of light (RGB) because humans have three color receptors in our eyes -- one for green, one for orangey-red, and one for indigo-blue. Subtractive color mixing with pigments, though, is a different beast, because pigments are chemicals, their effects don't combine as simply as when adding light beams, and when combined they make colors darker rather than brighter. This is why professional printers will often not use CMYK (or will supplement CMYK), instead using a specific Pantone ink for a critically important bright color. (Next time you break down a printed box, look for the quality control marks on the inside flaps to see what colors they used.) When you want the biggest, brightest "gamut" possible from paints/inks, it's better to follow their lead: increase the number of your pigments to 4, 5, or 6 (plus white). This is a great pigment color wheel I refer to constantly: www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/cwheel06.html.
