  • At the Mexico Games in 1968, two African-American athletes stood on the winners' podium - heads bowed, gloved hands raised in a black power salute. One of them, Tommie Smith, joins Krishnan on the aftermath of his controversial protest.

Thank you Tommie Smith and John Carlos...... And let's not forget Peter Norman.

Amen! I think Peter Norman is both an American and Australian Hero.
Never forget how his homeland dogged him out till the day he died. As usual, after people die they want to apologize. All 3 men are icons.
      RIP Peter Norman.

America doesn't need to forgive you, they need to seek forgiveness for even putting you in a position to have to publicly demonstrate on a matter that they choose not to address. Injustice among African Americans, racism, police brutality, and so much more.

What is sadly lost in coverage of this event is the role played by Australian Peter Norman who finished second. He supported Smith and Carlos 100% even wearing the human rights patch Smith and Carlos wore. He was ostracized in Australia. He qualified for the 72 Olympics but was not permitted to go. He was told he would be forgiven if he took a stand against this protest but he refused. He was not "forgiven" until years after his death when the Australian government drafted a formal apology. Smith and Carlos were pall bearers at his funeral. Please remember this piece of history when you think or read about Smith and Carlos. Thank you.

Thank you. History is amazing and needs updating. I have been updated by you, and my arguments against my white peers grow stronger. The story of this is on R 6 right now. It’s a good time I feel to remind people this happened in living memory and it matters.

What?! Tommie Smith & John Carlos are not in the Olympic Hall of Fame? This is egregious! Unconscionable! And they insist that politics has not place in sports? Puhleeze! Where is the outcry and activism from all of the athletes, particularly the Black athletes? You all are standing on the shoulders of these two great men, who each happen to be a helluva athlete! I'm embarrassed and ashamed! Power and Respect to you Tommie Smith and John Carlos. #1968OlympicGold

The facts surrounding Peter Norman have got quite mixed up over the years. His actions in 1968 didn't have any negative bearing on his athletic career at all. It went largely unnoticed in Australia that he wore a badge. He ran in the 1970 Commonwealth games unhindered. The first factual inaccuracy that has sprung up in the last twenty years is that he was blocked from competing in 1972. This is not the case. Norman wasn't selected because he came third in the Olympic trials and Australia were only offering two places, irrespective of how many athletes they had qith Olympic qualifying times. Had they picked everyone with an Olympic qualifying time they would have been taking seven 1,500M runners!. Norman retired from athletics after the trials.. The poor treatment of Norman came over a quarter of a century later when he was snubbed from taking a lucrative role in the Sydney Olympics unless he apologised for taking the stand in 1968. He refused and was snubbed from the 2000 games. It was this that he later received an apology for. However, over time, the facts have got jumbled up to suggest he was ostracised back in '68.

The truth that Jesus brought to to world, would not be, until his sacrifice. The truth that these men brought to the world, would not be realized, until their sacrifice. Now, those truths live forever.

The Three of them are and they didn't do it for the recognition, so no reason to compare them. All of them got their careers destroyed that day and became blacklisted by their Olympics committee.
