Thank you for taking the time to do this video. My son is learning survival and this video gave me the idea to test his knowledge. I will send him into Wal Mart to do this exact scenario. It will give me a good idea on how much he has learned & only cost me $20.00. Good job guys.
I guess a lot of the people commenting don't get it. Think outside the box! Sure, a $6 folding knife or $8 multi-tool is possible, but think about a kitchen knife. I used an old, high-carbon kitchen knife that was my Grandparents as a camp knife for years. The plastic tarp may not be the best shelter but it can be used to water-proof a lean-to or to make a solar still. Plus, it's 200 square feet and fits in a large pocket.
If Wal-Mart is the only place you can go in an emergency to put together a survival kit, be sure to check out the crafts section (bundles of paracord, plastic-coated woven metal wire for beading, spools of nylon cording for crochet and assorted cotton and acrylic yarns) also check out the home decor section for votive candles, religious candles in those tall glass containers, oil lamps and plastic bottles of lamp oil).
I've found old hickory brand kitchen knives at Walmart. Full tang, high carbon steel blades, wood scales. As a kid, my family used them when butchering livestock.
Great Thought! I like the fact that this short, fun video has got people thinking and brought out so many ideas. Thanks for participating, and please keep watching! -Adam
That plastic sheet is only 0.03" thick and would probably rip just by hanging it over a tree. Just building a lean to out of sticks would be better. Also, a stainless steel whetstone knife with a 4" blade is only $5.03 and it has a paracord handle. Get a magnesium firestarter for around $2, a canteen for around $5, a space blanket for $2, and an mre for $3. '
We decided to take trip and make it happen for under $20. We later used the contents of this kit during a Basic Survival Class we taught to a group of Navy Personnel. The challenge was a group activity to make a survival camp with only the supplies given. Thanks for watching! -Adam
My Mom is also a fan of the Wallyworld meals. She said the same thing: quick and easy - and it doesn't cut into her fishing time. LOL. I appreciate the feed back and the support. -Adam
We appreciate the positive feed back here at E2E and glad you enjoyed the video. It was fun. Keep watching and please invite you friends to join us also. Thanks for your support! -Adam
I agree. My Mom & Dad where big into yard sales. Raising 4 kids was expensive and that was one way to get some Nice stuff for cheap.. Thanks for the input. -Adam
i have watched this a few times in the last year, it is a good reminder of how you do not need to go overboard. I have my one good kit, but a few throw away kits too, thanks for the inspiration

I used to have top ramen in my bug out bag/survival kit, but then this past February (a week before my birthday of all times) the doctors diagnosed me with Celiac/Gluten allergy, so I had to cut all the gluten stuff out of my bag, biut they do have gluten free noodles, as well as gluten free pasta that I have been able to get for my survival bag.
Great Point! Unfortunately I didn't think of it at the time. Glad this little exercise put a lot of minds to work - I have gotten some good feed back. Thanks! -Adam
Glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the input. Can't believe I forgot the Duct Tape - especially after being raised in a household where my parents thought it a must have in every situation. Thanks for Watching! -Adam

We have footage of a class taught to a military unit that used this system in one of our practical exercises. I would be more than happy to share the footage. Keep an eye out on the Equip 2 Endure website
another possibility for knife/fire starter is a standard metal file. you can cut about 2.5" off the end and it can act as a steel for striking (real)flint/chert rocks, and the rest can be given a temper in a kitchen oven effectively making it knife steel that you could grind an edge into. a decent amount of work but saves money and you'd get reliable quality.
Take the $20 challenge ( shop where you want ) and see what you come up with. Feel free to share it with the E2E viewers. If you use the items in the field, even better - share some pictures and/or video. Thanks for watching -Adam
@BillGoose1313 , we have footage of a class taught to a military unit that used this system in one of our practical exercises. I would be more than happy to share the footage. Keep an eye out on the Equip 2 Endure website, I welcome the Pepsi Challenge! ;) - Adam
LOL! Actually my Mom couldn't believe I didn't get a mini jar of Vicks Vapor Rub. She won't go camping or fishing without it. She swears it's the best Bug Repellent ever made. Glad you enjoyed watching the video. -Adam
@BillGoose1313 , we use this kit in our survival classes during our practical exercises. Many of our students have been very successful in reference to being very innovative in the use of these item during a short term survival situation. If you would like to view some of our other 500+ videos outlining a plethora of topics in regards to basic & advanced skills, gear testing and reviews, industry event coverage, and K9 Training, you may find something that better suites your needs. -Adam

Have used Chicago Cutlery for years. From cable splicing to Rattle snake skinnin'. Lightweight, durable, and relatively inexpensive knives of various sizes that can be altered in length with a few hacksaw blades. Full tang with hickory maybe oak handles. Not for prying or batoning but are extremely useful.
Since I made this video, there have been a lot of people that took the $20 challenge just to see what they could come up with. Good luck, and let us know what you find. Thanks for watching -Adam
Every time me & my son head out in the bush and get our fire started I sing "Nothing starts a fire like a bic". BTW, I have that very same $3 SS bottle and I use it quite often. I know you can't be singles for the experiment but I keep a couple lawn & leaf bags in my pack for emergency shelter. Still though, my favorite survival thing at wallyworld is those Freeze dried meals in the camping section. They're quick, easy, light and taste really good.
No, that was not it's intent. If you would like to contribute you version of this video or an article we have an open forum on the Equip2Endure website. We have an open forum of idea sharing and earning. This kit was used by a Navy class we trained, as a critical thinking exercise and a team building exercise, which they did outstanding with. We teach people to do a lot more with a lot less, and they are successful in their applications of survival skills. - Adam
Nothing other than the plastic Wall Mart Bag to carry the "kit". I did have a suggestion from another viewer : To get an empty Paint can that could be used to not only boil water/food, but all items could be stored in it too. Thanks for watching! -Adam
Now we must have videos of the items being put to the test. How well does 1 mil plastic work for a tarp? Will the knife hold up to battoning, will it make a spark? How well will the bottle hold up to several boilings? I cant wait.
They are talking about the basics of survival, and under $20. With shelter, plastic to make a condensation still, a container to hold water, a fire starter, and twine, a person could make a tent, a trap to catch small game (snare), start a fire for heat and cooking, and keep their clothing dry, which could mean the difference between a very wet cold night, or a toasty warm night in a dry shelter that cuts the wind. No, it is not much, but it is practical.
We did use it. In fact, this "kit" was later used by a Navy class we trained, as a critical thinking exercise and a team building exercise, which they did outstanding with. Thanks for watching -adam
right.. i logged in just to comment here.. to all the people bashing walmart i must say you obviously dont know jack. while it is true that some of their items happen to be lower quality than other stores that doesnt mean that it is BAD quality. in fact 3 of the best pocket knives ive ever owned have come from walmart one of which being a kershaw which is made from slightly different steel without the spring assist as the same model with spring assist. also have an ozark trail folder that i have used for years and absolutely love. that being said this video is meant to help you purchase wisely and have SOMETHING which anyone with a brain would know is better than NOTHING.. so stop being a bunch of tools and take it for what it is.. to E2E thank you for a great video maybe not the items i personally would have picked up at wally world but certainly adequate
I Like Ozark Trail knives. They're really a Great Value for the money!! For what they cost...$4 or so...what the Hell?? Yes, made in China and with Mystery Steel blades, but I have Several types of them each of a Different Color, body style and blade configuration. And All of them have served me Very Well!! I suspect that Ozark Trail knives may be Collector's Items in the future, which is why I shop for them Every Christmas season when they're located on the endcaps in the Sporting Goods section...
True! Plus trash bags also become a poncho (which these guys also forgot), waterproof your gear, connect a few to improvise a sleeping bag (i actually did that in a cemetery last time i was homeless....)
This kit was used by a Navy class we trained, as a critical thinking exercise and a team building exercise, which they did outstanding with. We teach people to do a lot more with a lot less, and they are successful in their applications of survival skills.

I do not know why people hate bics personally I love them, it is a lot easier to start a fire with a flame plus it has the capabilities to be modded to throw only the sparks after the butane is used by simply cutting out the front grille with wire cutters.
I'm not sure about just getting stuff in one store but I agree with the basic premise, you don't always have to buy top dollar to get something that does the job. My Stainless steel water bottle cost about the same and it's been going strong for three years, I got my anodised aluminium billy pot from Wally World with a frying pan for £5 ($8) and its great except the handles but they can be replaced with metal coat hangars when needs be. If you use your common sense you can spend less money on some gear where you can get away with it then use that money in areas where you are better off spending it like backpacks/rucksacks, water proofs, boots and a good knife (that doesn't always mean expensive). Thanks for the vid!!
2:37 Really, what kind of survival knife is THAT? For a $20 budget, I would just pick a good folder for less than $10. I don't remember what it was, but there was a really good one for just $7.
An old butcher knife from a thrift shop would be a MUCH better option. You would get a GOOD bushcraft knife for not much money. Better than anything from walmart. I wouldn't trust any knives from walmart. Or any other item for that matter.
I think you may be unfamiliar with the scope of what we cover at Equip 2 Endure. I suggest you check out our website & the wide variety of content from high-end survival equipment and survival training to bushcrafting skills and outdoor adventuring. -Adam
see if you can get a cheap steel pot. holds more water, more gear and you can cook with it. all you need is a little cordage to hold the lid on (run it through the handles and over the lid).
Most of that stuff can be got at a thrift store a lot cheaper or a yard sale.I even got some stuff at our local county trash site in the steel ben, I got a tail gate grill, pressure pot(without lid), dog bowl not used.Try some of those places first.
Walmart sells a $1 folding knife. Its not bad either, compared to jute twine and one mil plastic. It is also light weight. A folded piece of aluminum foil is also super handy for cooking and will last for years. Some duck tape is a must for me.
They DO! i thought the same thing! i got a cheap multi-tool for $5 at Wal-Mart, it won't win any beauty contests or knife fights, but it will cut twine, skin game, file/strike flint, remove screws, etc.
We decided to take a trip and make it happen for under $20. We later used the contents of this kit during a Basic Survival Class we taught. Adam, don't ever let anyone tell you a three pack of bic lighters for under 2 bucks isn't a high value, user friendly, solid fire starting method. I always have 1 or 2 in my backpack along with the rest of my fire starting gear.
there is a 1.00 folding knife in the sporting goods section, or spend the extra money on the camp axe or cheap machete. that would help alot more than a kitchen knife.
I think you proved a point that you can have a kit without breaking the bank. I think you could have included a few more things to make the kit more complete. For example I have spent only a few dollars on the space blankets that walmart carries to good effect (its super important to stay warm/cool). I say go for a part two where you show a good survival kit made from inexpensive items, maybe without the limitations of having to buy all the stuff from the same place on the same trip.
I learned more about survival in the Boy Scouts than I did in the Army, and that's despite the fact that I took the Escape, Evade, and Survive Course in Tiger Village at Fort Polk Louisiana. I believe the two most valuable prepper or survival books you can find are the Boy Scout Manual, and the US Army FM(Field Manual) 21-76 - Survival.
@danzak44 We did not do a follow up video with this kit, but it is the kit we use in our training courses for students to use. It has worked very well. Thanks for watching. Adam
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. My son is learning survival and this video gave me the idea to test his knowledge. I will send him into Wal Mart to do this exact scenario. It will give me a good idea on how much he has learned & only cost me $20.00.

after a couple years, I'm not sure where most of that gear is. We will look into doing another with the field use part of the video.

@chrisw40 , LMAO yeah, I guess. What would the canteen be used for though?
- Adam
I tried filming in WalMart and got stopped. Cool video. Is a stainless steel water bottle better than a synthetic water bottle?
If its a true stainless bottle that doesn't have the vacuum seal liner, you can boil water to sterilize it, you can't do that in a synthetic bottle.
Have used Chicago Cutlery for years. From cable splicing to Rattle snake skinnin'. 2:37 Really, what kind of survival knife is THAT? For a $20 budget, I would just pick a good folder for less than $10. I don't remember what it was, but there was a really good one for just $7.
Well I know that, but I guess if it were me, I would look at the cheap folders before the cooking knives. Just my opinion.
Daydeon SurvivalTips well my bad i'm stupid i forgot they have 1$ ozark trail folding knives at walmart i must have been drunk when i wrote that
An old butcher knife from a thrift shop would be a MUCH better option. You would get a GOOD bushcraft knife for not much money. Better than anything from walmart. I wouldn't trust any knives from walmart. Or any other item for that matter.
purplemutantas So true brother.

Best money you ever spent in and emergency. No one claimed it would last forever.
I think you may be unfamiliar with the scope of what we cover at Equip 2 Endure. I suggest you check out our website & the wide variety of content from high-end survival equipment and survival training to bushcrafting skills and outdoor adventuring.

see if you can get a cheap steel pot. holds more water, more gear and you can cook with it. all you need is a little cordage to hold the lid on (run it through the handles and over the lid).
LOL, i know i am only a kid, but i LOVE bushcraft. I think it is the best thing EVER.
Most of that stuff can be got at a thrift store a lot cheaper or a yard sale.I even got some stuff at our local county trash site in the steel ben, I got a tail gate grill, pressure pot(without lid), dog bowl not used.Try some of those places first.
A Creative thought - Thanks!

Good tip - thank you!

the only suggestion i would say is to use bank line instead of twine, its stronger lighter and just as cheap for a higher quantity
lol. I get that response a lot. Thanks for watching

We decided to take a trip and make it happen for under $20. We later used the contents of this kit during a Basic Survival Class we taught. The challenge was a group activity to make a survival camp with only the supplies given. This kit was used by a Navy class we trained, as a critical thinking exercise and a team building exercise, which they did outstanding with. We teach people to do a lot more with a lot less, and they are successful in their applications of survival skills.

Adam
Does that mean you'll keep watching :)
