From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Cast: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, Margaret Qualley

I've always enjoyed Mark Ruffalo's acting, but this time he took it to a whole new level. He became someone entirely different, entirely possessed, and entirely wonderful.
he's a weirdo just like the director promoting child abuse
My thoughts exactly I was blown away by the character in this!
His character is such a controlling, brutish buffoon
@@calliefinck6275
That was the point, buffoon.
@@calliefinck6275it was amazing
When that lady handed Bella another book, half the people in the cinema I saw this in burst into cheers! It was glorious!
Does this film possess approximately the same world-building general Vibe as The Congress ?.
@@drumbum3.142 Haven’t seen that, so can’t really tell.
But it is a feast for the eyes, that’s what I’ll say!
That lady is Hanna Schygulla, a great german actress and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's muse
And then everybody clapped and gave you the golden key to the city 🔑
@lesryglrhfohser
Because OP's story was so hard to believe?
Willem Dafoe has been in the "why tf not?" stage of his career for almost 30 years now and it's been fun to see
He’s always been in that career stage
"You're in my sun" isn't that what Diogenes said to Alexander the Great
Yes, it is!
YES thank you
Yeah.
It was “I am Alexander, what can I do for you Diogenes”
“Move away from my sun”
“Oh Diogenes, if I was not Alexander I would like to be Diogenes”
“And I Alexander, if I was not Diogenes I would like to be Diogenes”

Hanna Schygulla, a legend of Europe's independent cinema. A forerunner of equal pay, and figurehead of some of the more important works of RW Fassbender.
The Lobster and The Favourite have some fun scenes but i was not expecting that Poor Things would be THAT FUNNY!!! Tremendous experience, one of the best films i've saw in a cinema theater.
Mark Ruffalo's best performance, bar none
You wouldn't like him when he's angry
He was great at playing a repugnant asshole.
This line,(youre in my sun)I suppose is a refrence to Diogenes who told the exact same thing to Alexander the great when Alexander went to meet him(they were also talking about cynisism which was diogenes philosophy so makes sense)
Quoting Diogenes perfectly in a discussion about philosophers is such a great little easter egg, I love it
"These two are fighting and ideas are banging around in Bella's head and heart like lights in a storm."
The poetry and rhythm of this line is fucking nuts. I love it.
i am just spellbound by the way she talks in this movie. congrats to emma stone for the best role of her career so far!
@@loekust Yes, her performance is absolutely brilliant. :)

I do like the comments that this film makes on men and their obsession with "childlike" qualities. it is disturbingly prevalent, even today, and is an almost exclusively male trait/sexual perversion.
while poor things does have some struggles with portraying the kind of feminist power it wants to, the way that it comments on this very explicitly twice made me happy. we need to call out those men for their obsession with infantile woman-as-child archetypes.
it's Hollyweird, this is not art, art is beautiful, they're promoting sick perverted stuff
Yes because "daddy issues' isn't a thing with women 😂😂😂
No . That is a stereotype. Maybe on average more than women but overall no.
@@AJ-mo6mwI'm sorry daddy issues aren't a thing with men?

I loved this reference to Diogenes of Sinope.
Nice little nod to Diogenes' and Alexander's purported interaction, witnessed by the self-professed cynic Harry.

this movie was so interesting "what came first the hen or the egg" "mother the child" are no more but yeth somthing new very intresting and all the sex in the movie made me blush hahah was not expecting it
To be honest the sex in it is not that shocking nor relevant. People need to understand that this movie is far more than that
@@mw8157 tbh do u not find it a bit shocking that the brain is a child ... and that the body is a women i find it a bit weard imo and the othe difrent complexity of the strucuture of the ppl stigma and sex etc ik about that but i did find it a bit weard . it is a very intresting movie but i think a lot of things in it are up for dabate where there are a lot of questions beeing asked and u are the one that will dicide if u can accept the things that are presented. like beeing objectified and yet having a brain of a child "retardation" of some sort and if it moraly ok to have sex and take advantege of somones inesence etc this movie had a lot of thoes questions in it so i do think the sex is a big thing in the movie and relavent but i did not expect it when i just saw the trailer

Is that labamba
I know that Mark Ruffalo's character is a bastard and deserves everything he gets, but I can't help feeling a bit sorry for him. More so for the assistant though. It's just mostly how Bella unintentionally hurts people by infidelity and such.
They know she has the brain of a child. They bring it upon themselves.
How does she hurt people by "infidelity"...?
Well. First off, she leaves the assistant to go on an adventure with Mark Ruffalo's character, even though they're engaged and she actually intends to still marry him later on. She IS mentally a child, which makes it excusable since she literally doesn't know any better. Then, when she's adventuring with ruffalo's character, she repeatedly has sexual encounters with other men. Something which Ruffalo's character absolutely deserves and again, she doesn't know any better. What kinda bothers me though is that later in the movie, even she has matured quite a bit, she still doesn't seem to realize, or care, how her actions affects other people.
@@twistedpersonality Okay, how did the "infidelity" affect them? She never made an agreement with Duncan to be strictly monogamous, and her engagement to the assistant was always more rational and practical than romantic. And they didn't agree on monogamy in that relationship either, may I add. Throughout the whole film she's fighting against people around her trying to control her, sexualize her, infantalize her, and again and again she's just choosing to live for herself. It's not infidelity if you never promised fidelity to anyone, it's just her enjoying being a sexual being and exploring the world before settling down. Duncan kept throwing tantrums over it because he expected to have a cute little stupid doll to have sex with whenever he pleased and wasn't used to something not going his way. None of her other lovers were uncomfortable with knowing she was in open relationships. Her being a sex worker wasn't treated as something disgusting in the film, just a job that she mostly enjoyed and learned a lot from.
@@trebaneconapise7793 Well, Duncan is an asshole that deserves everything he gets, that's true no matter how you look at it. And no, I'm not against the idea that she should be free to live her own life without people trying to control her. But I do still think that some of the things she does are pretty hurtful, even if she doesn't realize it herself. I know the assistant doesn't care much, but it is pretty hurtful that even when she's matured enough, she chooses to cancel their wedding in favor of going with the man that her "mother" was married to. Of course she has a right to find out about her past and live how she wants, but I found it a bit much that she would take it that far.
😂this was fun. This movie has different hilarious moments... just saw some scenes that were cut-out that would've made the story much better developed (like one where Bella questions the "madame", a gynecologist and health in the whore-house)
Ruffalo aced that role. Really funny.
This is like that Bechdel Test sketch in Rick and Morty except if Morty brushed up on his writing skills
INCREDIBLE THAT AN UNSCRPULOUS LIVING GUY HAS INVITED BELLA TO TRAVEL THE WORLD FOR FREE, YES, OF COURSE.....
Harry Astley was a great character with some great things to say, not sure why they cast such an awful actor to play him.
You would have to pay me to watch this shit
Why
Atrociously hideous dialogue, humour, acting, colour, light, framing
@@Luke-Cihra It’s great in my opinion. Maybe it’s just not your style I guess.
A member of the Joe Rogan Idiocracy, folks.
@@Luke-Cihrayou seem to know a lot about it considering u haven’t watched it. It’s ok if you don’t get it
Hysterical when he tried to throw her overboard. Jerrod Carmichael was the weak link of this movie - he’s not a good actor. Still… it’s worth seeing.
Οωερρατεδ.
Stone's acting is very surface level. She does a canned British accent but she does not act with her eyes. But people see the acting. The best acting you do not notice at all.
Did you see the movie?
The acting makes sense if you know the movie.
Famous and respected film critic icarus8471 obviously hasn’t even watched the movie, which is ALL Emma Stone eye acting. But they had a good wank over watching a 40 sec. clip of a young woman’s acting and criticizing it out of context in the hopes of a few RUclips likes. You’ve gotten 8 so far dude. Hope that feels good for you.
That’s because her character is born with a baby brain that rapidly ages.
@@beethovensfidelio even so, she cannot seem to internalize a character emotionally.
@@icarus8471
Isn't she like a female Frankenstein in this movie? Learning how to be human?
If you think about it there's at the core no real take away plot in this film. It doesnt apply to living in the real world. You couldnt act this way or apply these things in real life. Its just a bunch of creepy men/women living out their perverted fantasies and obsessions and playing with the idea of control over someone. Everyone tries to overexplain in great detail and complexity the plot because at the core its flawed. Without big known hollywood players and cinematic innovation this film wouldnt get the same approval.
Almost like the movie is a fantasy comedy
Yeah, as if movies weren't supposed to be real life, right? There was no symbolism whatsoever in this film, no fantasy, they aimed to make it 100% realistic, not bring up the problem with some men infantilising women and wanting full power over them, this world maybe needing more of the childhood idealism, the fact that people generally don't take children as separate beings with free will or make sort of a manifesto, call out to people to fight for a brighter future. Why would they, cinema is like classicist theatre, perfectly showing real life including time span and unity of place.
(In case you didn't understand, this was way too much effort put into several lines of sarcasm. It isn't people's problem you have shallow understanding of themes in fiction. If you don't get something, you don't have to - and it's better not to - say anything about it. Learn something about screenwriting, character development, directing and storytelling in general and then complain. You could add sociopolitical general awareness while you're at it.)
If you’re not well read, just say that. This film is so RICH in literature and philosophy, there are Easter eggs in every scene. You can say you don’t like it, but to say there’s no plot is a painfully lazy criticism.
I disagree completely. The movie had a very obvious feminist message.
You certainly can to an extent. I am very free in my own life. There’s no reason not to be. I simply draw the line at unnecessarily hurting/impacting another person with my actions or speech.
Poor things just like mark ruffalos career
Lmfao
what are you talking Ruffalo career it's awesome
I take it you never heard of that great HBO Film THE NORMAL HEART? Check out his scene with Alfred Molina...😢
lol in case u only know him as The Hulk, he won both Emmy and Golden Globe for his role in "I Know This Much Is True"
??? Mark Ruffalo has a prolific career that encompasses many genres including drama. Educate yourself.
Entertaining movie to watch, but ultimately silly.
Mark Ruffalo getting nominated for an Oscar over Willem Dafoe in this is a joke, Ruffalo went too Nicholas Cage and is all over the place.
The dialogue is awful and the accents are terrible. This is seriously the best they can do? Also, they couldn't film in real locations? I can't stand it when a movie is entirely shot in a studio.
Edit: I love how all the clowns commenting are completely ignoring the point I made about the dialogue and accents and solely concentrating on the real locations part.
Sounds like you just want all movies to strictly conform to a realistic aesthetic which would be incredibly dull.
You don't deserve the time it'll take to write this but the surreal scenery was an artistic decision.
@@chaosdream21 I'm absolutely crushed by your insignificant opinion. I'm glad I thoroughly triggered your delicate ass. 😂
Yorgo's work is very specific. If you have followed his work and progress, this is his first "Guy Maddin-ish" film. Where he plays with the aesthetic of the film. Guy Maddin is a Canadian director who has a habit of making his films look like Polaroid montages found under the rubble of a war. He is pure aesthetic. You probably won't like his stuff, but the example fits my argument. Give him a try if you can. My favorite Guy Maddin film is "Tales from the Gimli Hospital." It is like a David Lynch movie on crack. Unlike David Lynch's stuff, you can actually follow this one.
This jackass doesn’t know what art is. 😂
