Thanks, Serge. That’s definitely next level audio. I’ll have to give it a try in my next video. I like the idea of having a consistent sound across videos.
Thanks for the advice, Serge! I wish more creators paid more attention to their audio. It can get really annoying sometimes when the video gets really loud after being very quiet.
Of all the people who I have watched on using FCP you are the best. Keep up the great work! This tutorial on loudness was exactly what I needed for my project.
Great video. You explained this so well and now I can adjust my audio correctly (instead of increasing the DB). I tested with your instructions on a few clips and it is night and day the audio. Thank you so much!
I keep learning more and more from you. As a motorcycle content creator audio is a constant source of headaches. With all the extra noise components it can be a real bugger to keep consistent. Thanks.
THANK YOU! I made notes on this and got 100/100% results. Since I'm a writer / producer and engineer of my music I did notice something. I thought I was going to have a bunch of unwanted hiss/noise from using the limiter but it was ok. Since my music is COMPRESSED before adding and syncing it up with the scenes I noticed my output level in FCPX is AFTER to Meter/Limiter it was running at -6db after proper adjustment and tested on RUclips. So in a nutshell I re-tested my video sent out to RUclips with output level at -6b without the Limiter etc and achieved the same 100%/!00%. I wouldn't recommend this to other video folks if they don't have exact specs on their audio but will work great for me since my output studio audio is always the same...Thanks for you help so I would be able to get accurate tests!!!
In another video of yours you set some of these levels, differently. With different values. I've already set the levels following the other video and now I should probably have to change them to follow this. There are so many changes and things that you can do that it really is overwhelming. You do one thing and then discover you should do it differently after having applied the change to all video. :)
This is brilliant - thank you! If i have a 30min video and I'm running the audio inspector, is there a way to FF this vs wait for the whole audio duration as it inspects :) TY!
Brilliant one. Can you make a video on composing the background audio and voice-over audio so it's just right? I struggle to make the background audio just loud enough, perhaps you have a go to model for approaching this?
Good morning Serge. I am into making Christian song videos and am deeply frustrated in this matter: the audio of RUclips videos we create sounds so well on all devices except one: mobile phone speakers where the volume is reduced! I will use your suggested method and hope things will be sorted out! One doubt exists in my mind: does the browser you use affect the audio quality of the uploaded videos? Would using Google Chrome instead of Safari help matters? Actually I wish you or someone else would bring out educative videos upon this matter at a greater depth. Anyway, thanks for this video. I have never considered FCPX as the place I could normalise levels of my audios. Have a nice day Serge. You are one on your own: excellent and crisp presentation.
love this video and just got into FCP and your videos are helping. I subbed and will be watching more. One question though when you are playing back to get the levels can you scrub or do you have to let it play though at normal speed? I am playing normal but wanted to check. thanks.
Great video. Important subject matter not known by most, presented in a short concise manner. One of the best instruction videos and I rate 5 stars. I am grateful to Serge
Thanks for this video. So, I have used this technique a few times now, but one thing I can never figure out is how to make sure of the final True Peak measurements, if you happen miss the playback reaching the end of the video. Sometimes I will be multitasking, instead of just sitting there staring at the meter (while the full video plays in the background). Then the video reaches the end and loops and it clears the data. Afterwards, I have to start over again. Any fix for this?
Is there a way to get these values without having to play through. This get time consuming, when you have to readjust several times, and are dealing with longer videos. .
I'm new to FCPX, so this may be a real noob question, but how do you access the level meter in the lower right at 2:22? I subscribed and turned the bell on, btw! :)
I generally make any dialogue or talking to around -6 db and have background music or sounds float around -12 db. I sometime double the dialogue tracks to make the sound of the voices thicker. I don't know why this does what it does, but there is a definite difference... presence... to speech tracks where I do this.
Thanks! Nice technical details about the loudness. Still, your intro is a bit louder than the voice: I move the volume up and down in your videos before and after the intro.
I’m using the multimeter just like you said, but at the end of my 40 minute video everything just drops down to -70…it doesn’t show me the overall levels at all…what am I doing wrong!?!?
@@kayblack8822 There is definitely a bug with the plug-in. I'm not sure if the FCP update fixed it, but I ended up buying Youlean Loudness Meter Pro, which is EXCELLENT. Well worth $37. Good luck!
Serge please answer this question. After the playback for the mutimeter is done, everything goes back to 0 and i cannot capture the numbers. how to stop this?
No matter how many videos I watch about this topic, I still can't for the life of me understand why all the content in RUclips sounds significantly louder than broadcast TV. I watch RUclips mostly in my living room's TV connected to an ONKYO home theater. If I leave my sound system at the same volume as when I watch TV, but switch over to RUclips on the Smart TV, I have to bring the volume down on my home theater from about -12 dB to around -30 dB or my neighbors will hear my TV from their living room.
Great video! I have tried with a couple of videos. On one video however I have -16 LUFS but true peaks only on -3.0 dB. Is this ok or should I upper the output level to reach -1.7 dB ?
Great stuff! I did not know this was possible. Would there be a way to do this maybe less accurately, with playing the whole project? That seems quite time consuming.
Hi Serge, my regular built-in green meters in FCPX show peak values that are about 12 dB higher than the values I see on the Multimeter set at True Peak. In your video the meters seem pretty much the same. Any idea what could be causing the difference? As far as I can see I am using the same settings of the multimeter as you are.
Solved this! It turns out that if you increase the volume of the compound clip in the audio track, that increase is not reflected in the multimeter. When I reduce the volume change to 0 dB in the track or in the inspector, the two meters are equal. So your method with the limiter is really the way to go ;)
There's a RUclips playlist that I compiled for myself from other peoples' existing YT videos, and it is a mix of songs and movie clips. When played, the volume changes from clip to clip; some tunes are soft while a few others play quite loudly; also, the dialogue/movie clips' audio runs the gamut from loud to very quiet. I was wondering if there is a way somehow to change the volume so that most of the videos don't have dramatic differences in sound, and if this can be done in RUclips itself (without using outside apps or software). Thank you.
Hey Serge! How do you level out all of the audio while keeping the outro music up? (I'd like to increase the background music as the video fades out.) Should I leave the outro music out of all the leveling modifications? Thank you!
This is THE MOST HELPFUL video I've ever seen on setting audio levels in Final Cut Pro! You're a genius!
Thanks, Serge. That’s definitely next level audio. I’ll have to give it a try in my next video. I like the idea of having a consistent sound across videos.
It does make a difference!

Thanks Serg! The exact video I was hoping for! Keep them coming, great channel!

This is great, Serge. I'm totally confused but I'll definitely save this video and follow it step by step for my next upload! Thank you. -Ed
I've been waiting for this topic, even thought about requesting it from you. Now to try it out. Thanks.
Thank you Serge! I was so discouraged to edit my videos just because of the audio editing which always gave me a headache. This tutorial is awesome!!

Thanks for your videos!
Cool Serge, you always read my mind.

Excellent - most simplistic explanation of an over complicated topic
This video was soooooo helpful! I wish I had started doing this earlier. I just did it to my most recent edit and my gosh does it sound better!!!!
Thanks brother, very well explained
Thanks Serge, this one is very helpful.
great tips, will remember to reference this stuff when I upgrade my stuff some day!

I think the Pro version of Youlean Loudness meter can analyze your audio without playing the whole thing, but not 100 percent sure how well it works
