I'd considered this for setups like fireball (bait jump in) heavy tatsu, but never realized all the other options he has. You've made getting into Ken 100 times more fun and shown that you can have many game plans in SFV!
went in to this video expecting nothing, but i am very impressed. i really enjoy how capcom made ken a complex character this time, i may use him as a secondary
+Pan (ScDrPain) You say that his general game plan is to stay at long range to throw fireballs then anti air etc. But wouldnt most of the casts anti fireball vskills/moves counter act this? Some other characters have pretty long range punishes from a read fireball as well. Doesnt this make your long range game plan dangerous/counter productive?
takeshii Its all matchup dependant. A character like nash will steal all your fireballs, but that gives you an opportunity to dash forward and begin pressure after he vskills. Its things like that.
Super solid video. I was thinking Ken played more like this, but I always emphasized that he would be a mid tier character because he seems more on the punishing side. Overall great job on the video. You have me wanting to learn Ken a lot more.
Won't be playing as Ken in SFV anytime soon, but this is a great breakdown. It makes perfect sense how you explain your position on how to use the character.
I've been looking for stuff like this. i was with Ken even tho ppl were saying he was bad in the beta. i knew he played differently but i didn't know how to apply it but thanks for the tech man. you helped a Ken loyalist like me a lot
excellently produced, I love how you splice in the sf4 videos for visual representation of your ideas/examples . I've never liked ken before this ( or any of the shotos) but this video has got me very curious to play him when my freaking pre-ordered copy finally arrives (damn amazon and their lazy logistics division, kinda wish i just went to my local supermarket and picked it up instead of pre ordering it 3 months in advance)
I like how you put multiple options he has for situations, and listed the pros AND cons for each. I also had no idea his V-Trigger Tatsu was that good, I always just found it pretty. This was cute, I enjoyed it. :3😇
Bruh that was excellent. I want to stick with this character, and realized that his moves up close are just not beating others, and started searching for punishing with ken and came across your video. Thanks so much man.
I was surprised when I started to read that people were saying ken was bad. I never saw this at all, he's still pretty solid and thank god someone made a video to explain this.
I love seeing characters being played in different ways than people expect. Having him be a medium/long range character makes him much more interesting to me than before. Especially as a Gouken player in SFIV. ... now to actually get good at dashing.
This is the first time Ken has appealed to me since x-men vs street fighter. This 6 minutes has changed my entire outlook on a character I have barely cared about since 1992.
Ryswick Lol yeah I recently started making vids again when I can. Now that SFV is out I'm gonna be posting hardcore. And yeah I stream on Twitch. I'll be streaming much more now that SFV's out bro. Here's my stream link. www.twitch.tv/free1up
Yes thank you! I've been playing with Ken a lot lately and I'm really liking how he feels. These strategies just helps out so much. Now I just got to practice! :D
Even though there are some bad ideas in here when approaching people (the dashing would get stuffed), the overall effort in looking for new ways to play and show others, instead of complaining like people have on reddit and twitter is really nice to see. liked and subscribed
Thank you for this. I wanted to learn how to use him effectively and heard that he was just not great at what he did (rushdown). Now I see a totally different way to approach the character. Honestly, way more technical and less aggressive than I would have expected for Ken.
The downside of this guide is that skillful players won't fall for some of this stuff. Example: - Opponent jumps forward over hadoken and gets anti aired by DP. Nash (who is used in the video of this moment) can just absorb fireball with V-skill and even get a full punish with his V-trigger. Almost all of the cast have some skill/special to punish or go through such fireballs (For example, Necalli's charge or Bison's V-skill). There is even an example of how Ken can do that in this video (hk.tatsu during V-trigger over fireball). But, for example, I didn't know that Ken's EX tatsu can AA neutral jump from almost full range. I found quite a lot of stuff I didn't know about. Keep up the good work!
Really nice video +Pan (ScDrPain) really nice breakdown on the reason for playing mid-long range. Testing this on the final release on SFV today, seems everything stills works.
Bro, you are the man. I learned ken soon as the game dropped cause I liked the idea of his vskill, and he looked a little different. I'm very new to sf, and I do okay vs some people, but a few times I got my ass handed to me trying to play footsies from close range. His cr mk is really ass and honestly they need to give him just a litttttle more range, I mean his foot actually touches them and doesn't connect. I also noticed that just trying to blindly rush in doesn't work either. You have to be patient to get that "rushdown" started. Another mixup I have been doing is getting knockdowns then from a distance, I do a vskill throw cancel on their wake up, and it happens so fast, people really don 't expect it lol...I really think you have figured out exactly how he should be played. 10/10 vid!!
Very smart, you have put together Ken's tools in to a coherent game plan. I will have to use this as inspiration to build a plan for my own characters.
Normally I don't comment on videos, but I find this one to be revolting. I'm going to specifically focus on the first two minutes of this video because I am positive that using ken's dash in the way that you suggested would be anything but beneficial. The fancy editing doesn't save it. Ken's dash is really good, I agree with you on this point. Also -- Ken doesn't have the best footsie tools to go up Vs. Chun-li at mid-range. This is also true. Ken is a strong contender at very close range with his 4 frame b+mp, his easy confirms from cr.mp and normals xx fireball confirms into v-triggers, not to mention his runs and quick dash to keep up the pressure. Dashing in and doing cr.mp isn't a bad idea if you've conditioned the opponent properly, but why would you backdash after it is blocked? That is your chance to attack! Backdashing resets you back to SPECIFICALLY THE RANGE YOU TRY TO AVOID. After a blocked cr.mp is where your offense starts, you'd have to be mental to backdash (they aren't even invulnerable in SFV). You are at plus frames on block and can trap with st.mp xx fireball if you have V-Trigger for an easy confirm if they press any buttons, you can do st.hp for a CC confirm or walk forward and throw. NOBODY is going to block your cr.mp in footsies then mash a DP. That is not how nor when people use dragon punches. Alpha counter is a "maybe" but only if they are 100% sure you will dash -- it is still hard to react with the alpha quickly enough. And if they are so ready on you dashing in why not challenge with a normal instead? As a sidenote you cannot confirm cr.mp into hk tatsu on reaction to a hit nor should you since st.lk xx hp srk is a hit confirmable and more damaging option. cr.mp xx hk tatsu is a cancel, cr.mp > st.lk is a link and thus gives you ample of time to confirm. B+mp>hp TC is also really easy to hit confirm, but the b+mp is minus on block so its harder to get offense going after it. Why are people praising this video? I'm sorry for being so frank but the last thing we need new players to do is try to emulate this approach.
+ili6741 I'm probably the last one you'd expect to say this, but I appreciate your look on this. I specifically like mixing up st.hp and throw after the medium punch and linking cr.mp > st.lk (was not aware of this link). Much better options. Might make a followup video covering these options. EDIT: made one, didn't go into extreme detail, but showed different things
+Zackat I care about the new players coming into this game, as does Pan for sure (otherwise he wouldn't have spent the time making a video in the first place). Creating content takes time, and I'm sure that it's done in good spirit. It's the information in it I'm objecting to. If you try and build your Ken around dash mixups and whiff punishing with mk tatsu and hp srk you will have a terrible time. Heck, in order to whiff punish with those specials you'd have to be buffering the special to begin with and thus not doing anything else. It would also only work versus some heavy normals -- if the opponent does a cr.mk (much more likely) and you HP srk or MK tatsu it you will not enjoy your life. If they whiff a normal that'd be a good time to dash in instead, for example. I think Ken is getting a bad rep due to loss aversion, i.e. the things he lost between beta versions makes people forget just how much he actually still has. A bit like how all Sagat players quit the character from vanilla to super (an extreme example, I know).
+ili6741 I'm pretty sure this video is about playing the NEUTRAL game with ken so that you can get in and set up meaties without getting beat out by the better poking characters. You really jumped the gun.
+Most Valuable Pig His target combo starts with lp and can easily hit confirm into heavy tatsu for almost 300 damage. That heavy tatsu puts the opponent pretty close to the corner most of the time. His pressure might not be the best, but it's there.
Dude, gotta say thanks for this. I've been playing some online but couldn't pull my shit together as ken. Watched this video and started using heavy tatsu for anti airs and using hadoukens to bait them into it and holy shit that works like a charm. Also used heavy tatsu to punish a full screen shoryu whiff for a KO and screamed with joy. Thanks man!
Thank you, I thought I was the only person that felt this way. I like him much better as a traditional shoto, which is funny because I found Ryu a little lacking in that department myself, and felt like maybe it was time I find a new playstyle, when I tried Ken on a whim and loved how he felt hahah!
Great work! I had some success with Ken in the beta, mostly by abusing dat dash and v-skill, but now I have some more weapons at my disposal. He's actually a good option for an old Sagat player like me. edit: but they are called Critical Arts now, not supers (5:24) :)
The problem is that any good player is not going to let Ken play at those ranges. You'll be pushed into the corner before you know it! Plus no will throw a fireball at long range once his activates V-Trigger so his heavy tatsu will remain useless...
this explains Punks Ken at a time when punk was still not a power house. Most players play ken wrong i think. this video explains how he should be played i think. hit and run and not just yolo.
I love this idea, feels like Alpha 2 Charlie. In practice it hasent shown much promise unfortunately, I haven't gotten consistent mileage off playing him with keep away Hado's and AA's. Nash still plays these ranges 100x better.
well this helps support my Ken theory that he is a hit and run till he gets in for pressure. He also has tricky v-skill resets off a lk tatsu from what Ive seen.
This is a great video. I have to say you did an amazing job finding out Ken's strengths, HOWEVER... 1. Ken has been sold by Capcom as a " RUSHDOWN CHARACTER " , which obviously he's not ! 2. Although you found a way to play him differently - something I don't mind at all - he now is a " fishing character " because of how bad his normals are. There's no going around that. What we would be doing is compensating for something that should be there ! Like I said, nothing wrong with playing him differently , but take into consideration that he will suffer too much by being very hard to keep opponents at mid distance and being out poked from close range. He has some good tools, granted, but not for many Street Fighter Fivish situations... I see him suffering a lot against many characters who are just better equipped. Yeah I love the character design and his style, but they nerfed him too hard man ! All the gimmicks in the world won't compensate that.
+Juan G It confuses my as well why Capcom sells him as a rushdown, and then nerfs all of his obvious rushdown options. He can be mean in your face with throw / throw bait, but any time he is not next to the other player, hes fullscreen lol.
+Pan (ScDrPain) He looks on paper like on of the strongest characters in the game ! Very offensive and well rounded. But now he is good just for ...fishing !!?? I see characters like Necalli, Karin and Cammy making it really hard for him. He really didn't need to be nerfed this much. Fun to play, hard to win with.
most of these concepts are what i ended up using by day 2 of the beta. except m.tatsu or DP as a whiff punish. i used s.lk buffer to whiff punish same result but a whole lot less risky.
Hey pan I don't have upload device yet but you could try out some Ken tech I found using St. Mk and CR. HP then quick step to switch position as you anti air useful in the corner when the opponent jumps at you.
Fantastic video. Will be adding a lot of this info to my arsenal.
I'd considered this for setups like fireball (bait jump in) heavy tatsu, but never realized all the other options he has. You've made getting into Ken 100 times more fun and shown that you can have many game plans in SFV!
I wish more tutorials were like this. They tell you what you need to do simply and plainly, goes over common strats and then a gameplay. 6 minutes.
went in to this video expecting nothing, but i am very impressed. i really enjoy how capcom made ken a complex character this time, i may use him as a secondary
His gameplan is actually pretty traditional, but many people have been struggling with Ken throughout the beta. Hopeful this helps you out!
Great stuff man, you are drawing what actual game will look like for several months! I am very impressed.
Thank you for the tech my good sir
+Pan (ScDrPain) You say that his general game plan is to stay at long range to throw fireballs then anti air etc. But wouldnt most of the casts anti fireball vskills/moves counter act this? As someone who's planning on sticking with Ken, this video is _extremely_ useful.
Super solid video. I was thinking Ken played more like this, but I always emphasized that he would be a mid tier character because he seems more on the punishing side.
Overall great job on the video. You have me wanting to learn Ken a lot more.
One of the best character tutorials I've seen, great job keep it up!
This was extremely well done, and even more so illuminating. thanks
As a Ken player since SF2, thank you for this
Won't be playing as Ken in SFV anytime soon, but this is a great breakdown. It makes perfect sense how you explain your position on how to use the character.
I've been looking for stuff like this. i was with Ken even tho ppl were saying he was bad in the beta. i knew he played differently but i didn't know how to apply it but thanks for the tech man. you helped a Ken loyalist like me a lot

can't wait to put some srs work into Ken SFV

This is the first time Ken has appealed to me since x-men vs street fighter. This 6 minutes has changed my entire outlook on a character I have barely cared about since 1992.
I knew I wasn't crazy. Ken definitely isn't trash!
+Lance Cryor Damn dude, I haven't watched you in forever, going to be making SFV Bison videos? Hell, do you stream?
Ryswick Lol yeah I recently started making vids again when I can. Now that SFV is out I'm gonna be posting hardcore. And yeah I stream on Twitch. I'll be streaming much more now that SFV's out bro. Here's my stream link. www.twitch.tv/free1up
Thank you so much for this. As someone with very little experience in this genre this is a huge help for figuring out a character!
Finally bit the bullet and got SFV today.... this video has been very helpful as to what ken's options are! Thank you!
This was great. Thumbs up for the effort for the video and the optimal and innovative playstyle!
Yes thank you! I've been playing with Ken a lot lately and I'm really liking how he feels. These strategies just helps out so much. Now I just got to practice! :D

You are on fire dude.... can't wait to see what you produce once the full game is out
This is a really, REALLY good video. You've singlehandedly changed my opinion of Ken.

Holy shit !! What a BEAUTIFUL video clip !!! The BEST video I ever seen about ken of SFV.
Really nice video +Pan (ScDrPain) really nice breakdown on the reason for playing mid-long range. Testing this on the final release on SFV today, seems everything stills works.
nice work!
+UltraDavid Thank you!
I hope you get more subscribes man , this is so legit . Thanks for solidifying my intent in maining Ken
Very cool video. Glad to see people not giving up on ken just because a couple of people say he sucks.
What a amazing tutorial i was about to ask you for the dictator's tutorial but i saw too soo you just got yourself a new subscriber good job!

Perhaps this will alleviate the "Do combo" mentality of the bad Ken.
+Most Valuable Pig His target combo starts with lp and can easily hit confirm into heavy tatsu for almost 300 damage. That heavy tatsu puts the opponent pretty close to the corner most of the time. His pressure might not be the best, but it's there.
solid stuff. never looked at him this way before
Thanks a lot for these infos! Looking forward to apply everything I learned from this video! Thanks again, Pan :)
Excellent video. It really put things in perspective for me. I'm so excited about what you showed me with HK Hurricane Kick! :D
thank you. i was waiting for someone to shine some light on ken in 5
Dude, gotta say thanks for this. I've been playing some online but couldn't pull my shit together as ken. Watched this video and started using heavy tatsu for anti airs and using hadoukens to bait them into it and holy shit that works like a charm. I figured this out myself in the last beta, and won roughly 75% of my games. Ken is amazing in SFV.
"Bust these misconceptions*..." Fixed that for ya.
This is great; thanks for putting this all together
V Trigger heavy tatsumaki is so much fun to use. They never expect me to jump over their fireball as a whirling spin of fire
Heavy vtrigger tatsu from (nearly) fullscreen on reaction is some godlike stuff.
Thank you, I thought I was the only person that felt this way. I like him much better as a traditional shoto, which is funny because I found Ryu a little lacking in that department myself, and felt like maybe it was time I find a new playstyle, when I tried Ken on a whim and loved how he felt hahah!
this helped my Ken play tremendously. thank you!
I saw a comment from the other Max but the superior Max is here to save the day :^^^)
This video made me think of Ken from SF2 (forget which version) but kind of flashy, fast and high-flying... like he's meant to be!
learnt so much from this video, props to you mate.
It like you reading my mind on who I'm plan on using. First, Bison now Ken? LOL! If Karin's next, I'm done! Keep up the good work, looks awesome.
+jayshelton86 Welllll, I'm not doing Karin alone in the next video, but she will be in it xP
Great work! I had some success with Ken in the beta, mostly by abusing dat dash and v-skill, but now I have some more weapons at my disposal. He's actually a good option for an old Sagat player like me.
edit: but they are called Critical Arts now, not supers (5:24) :)
Thank you. I was gonna main him and Nash in SF5. Thanks for the advice
Nice tips. Just started playing Ken. I guess most of the guides still valid
So, Ken is in fact, a Guilty Gear character. Th-thank you TTwTT
awesome stuff man!!!...that anti air EX tatsu and anti fireball heavy tatsu. Ken just got a lot more scary
Great video, first time I see a video from you and I instantly subscribed. Hope you'll post more smart stuff on the other characters !
This has helped me a ton thanks a lot bro!
this is awesome dude, it a perfect amount of info for the chararcter
+GOON GON!xdf
+danielvutran 👍👍👍
I'm new to sf and this was very helpful to learn from I can't wait to try this out
I have never paused a non porn video so much! Jeez, the speed at which that text flies by!
This is Awsome!! Saw some shimmy in there though!
Xaiah the Shimmy Gawd
Solid video. I actually like this kind of Ken.
This is awesome, doing God's work man.
Now this is what I call new tech!
The problem is that any good player is not going to let Ken play at those ranges. You'll be pushed into the corner before you know it! Plus no will throw a fireball at long range once his activates V-Trigger so his heavy tatsu will remain useless...
+UserX03 If nobody throws a fireball because of tatsu, then it has worked at eliminating fireballs ;)
+Pan (ScDrPain) haha true, kinda like the threat of his U2 in sf4. i hope ken will be good in sf5 but still i don't feel too encouraged
this explains Punks Ken at a time when punk was still not a power house. Most players play ken wrong i think. this video explains how he should be played i think. hit and run and not just yolo.
Thanks for sharing these awesome tips man!
Very cool. Gonna have to give this a shot.
Thanks a lot for this video! Now you made my decision to main Ryu or Ken even harder :P
this man is a lab monster

This game looks amazing with the motion blur. I wonder why it's not on the PS4 version.
thanks for the info! I have been playing him all wrong
Excellent video, I think the new Street Fighter is going to force people to think strategically to succeed!
interesting. I'll favorite this to study later.
And here i am...unable to do Hadouken consistenly haha.
+ACmaniacos haha, I was just thinking the same thing...
nice to know men.. really good stuff
great concepts
I had a feeling this was gonna be the case wit ken eva since beta 2
woooow! this is so good!!! thank you so much !!!!
good stuff! thanks for the awesome video, I'm definitely gonna subscribe.
Amazing ideas
