Hard to say. Maybe the orchestra board were giving Maestro van Zweden trouble over programming too much difficult contemporary music. And the board control the orchestra's funding, of course, and therefore cannot be ignored. So he found something recent, but stylistically old-fashioned and easier for the wealthy oilmen, ranchers, bankers, and Chevy dealers of Dallas to follow. It wouldn't be the first time that newer music had "too many notes" to digest for those who supply the money. Not at all.
