Hello Mr. Travis & Mrs. Suzi Q; How is everything going? Recently you reacted to Van Halen's "Jump". It hit #1 on Saturday February 25th, 1984 and stayed there 5 weeks, until Saturday March 24th 1984. I told you I celebrated those 5 weeks and there was a story that goes with another song, this may take a minute or two so please bear with me. I will tell you this first, I used to go to a church that had a seminar and a dance on the first Saturday of every month, that was Super Saturday. Well, a friend and I jumped when "Jump" was played, one time my shoe went flying off, we were reprimanded, I said the song said to "jump". Well of course we went to church on Sunday and while driving home we always listed to the bottom part of the countdown by Casey Kasem, usually the top 10. This song you will be reacting to climbed the charts and followed "Jump" for many weeks until finally on Saturday March 31st, 1984 it took over #1 and stayed there 3 weeks. My brother Duane always liked "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins and it was played as #1 on April 1st, 1984, my brother's birthday, what a great present. Back then Van Halen's "Jump" was my #1 of the 2, now I have a great respect & love for "Footloose", and also in fact it even has a movie with the title, maybe a watch for you 2 someday. There used to be a guy named Paul Harvey, the older people know him, when he finished a story he always ended it with "And know you know the rest of the story", now Mr. Travis & Mrs. Suzi Q "Now you know the rest of the story". I'll be in touch again soon, and as my brother always says, "ENJOY".

The high school where this was filmed is closing this year. It's their last prom, and Kenny Loggins is going to be there. These kids have called it The Footloose Year!
I'm so glad I was a teen in the 80s! So much fun!
So many great dancers - no competition.

Everything about FOOTLOOSE as a movie is iconic. The song by Kenny Loggins is one that everyone knows and dances to and one of his most popular. The movie is iconic, especially for the 80's generation. This song made Kevin Bacon a household name. Growing up as a teenager in the 80's this movie was special. Most of us found it hard to believe that there were towns that didn't allow dancing and as a kid I was stunned when I found this out. The song was written for the movie and helped propel the movie, much in the same way Kenny's song - "Danger Zone" helped the movie TOP GUN. Kenny was the most prolific writer of movie songs in the 80's. "I'm Alright" for the movie CADDYSHACK, "Danger Zone" for TOP GUN, "Meet Me Halfway" for OVER THE TOP, "I'm Free" for FOOTLOOSE, "Nobody's Fool" for CADDYSHACK II. He was a hit maker for movies and made the movies explode. Movie makers knew it and called on him to write songs because his songs were so much a part of making the movies a lot of money.

    Travis & Suzi
Kevin Bacon (Ren from Footloose) returned to local high school in Utah where Footloose was filmed after current high schoolers invited him for their prom last month. He agreed to come by to hang out with the students. Reason for his visit is that original school is scheduled to be demolish because new high school has current school's name. Clips of Kevin's announcement & visitation are on NBC's Today Show (Today Show's RUclips Channel).

The song was released Jan 11th 1984 the movie was released Feb 17th 1984. Footloose is based on a true story. In 1979 the small town of Elmore City, Oklahoma faced a community crisis. The seniors of Elmore High School wanted to plan a senior prom, but dances were against the law thanks to a not-forgotten ordinance from the late 1800s that forbade dancing within the city limits.

Kenny Loggins was involved in many of the biggest soundtracks of the 80’s. The song Footloose was written as the title track to the movie soundtrack. Legendary choreographer & directed Kenny Ortega did this movie & Dirty Dancing. Kevin Bacon was a very good dancer but nobody back then got close to Patrick Swayze who was a trained dancer (his mother owned a famous dance school in Texas and he and his wife were its star pupils).

The song was written for the movie. Loggins co-wrote it along with another song for the movie, "I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)". The movie was about a town where the elders didn't allow dancing. Kevin Bacon saved the town ;)

Choreographer (1984): Lynne Taylor-Corbett. As per Kevin Bacon, his dance scene in the warehouse, Bacon said he had 4 stunt doubles: "I had a stunt double (Peter Tramm), a dance double and two gymnastics doubles." All dance for film had at a minimum, a choreographer on set even if a dancer put in some of his/her own ad lib choreography, i.e., Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock" film; while everyone said Elvis choreographed the dance scene, choreographer Alex Romero worked w-him & (it's said)Gene Kelly was on set also, while Elvis(it is said) had much input. "Dirty Dancing" 1987.

I say this in the kindest and comical way but your parents failed if you haven't seen this brilliant movie. Please, please watch it. Do a reaction to it. You'll love it. Very fun reaction! Great movie and a great ending scene.
As far as Kevin Bacon or John Travolta in a dance off with Patrick Swayze, there is literally zero competition. Swayze would have put them both to shame within seconds. Travolta in his prime was an excellent dancer, and did have some training I believe. Swayze, however, was a professionally trained ballet dancer since childhood. He turned to acting after a serious knee injury ended his dancing career, but the skills remained.

This was 3 years before DD.
The song and the film pretty much came out at the same time.
It's important to know that the premise of the movie is that it is a small rural town where dancing, and rock music, is highly looked down upon by the local church and its pastor, who preaches against it.
Kevin Bacon's character is new to the town and comes from Chicago, and tries to loosen up the town, especially the kids, by teaching them to dance, etc.

Footloose the movie was actually based on a true story. From Wikipedia: "Footloose is loosely based on the town of Elmore City, Oklahoma. The town had banned dancing since its founding in 1898 in an attempt to decrease the amount of heavy drinking. One advocate of the dancing ban was the Reverend from the nearby town of Hennepin, F. R. Johnson. He said, "No good has ever come from a dance. If you have a dance somebody will crash it and they'll be looking for only two things-women and booze. When boys and girls hold each other, they get sexually aroused. You can believe what you want, but one thing leads to another." Because of the ban on dancing, the town never held a prom. In February 1980, the junior class of Elmore City's high school made national news when they requested permission to hold a junior prom and it was granted. The request to overturn the ban in order to hold the prom was met with a 2-2 decision from the school board when school board president Raymond Lee broke the tie with the words, 'Let 'em dance.' "

(In this movie, a tragic death was the cause of the ban)-“On the drive home, Ariel describes how, five years earlier, her older brother died in a car accident after a night of alcohol and dancing. Their father Reverend Moore then persuaded the town council to enact strict anti-liquor, anti-drug, and anti-dance laws.”- So this wasn’t just an Uptight preacher laying down what “He” believes. His tragic loss, and deathly afraid to lose his daughter, is the reason for the ban. But that’s what makes this a great story. Because in the end, they still hold the party across a town line. But Dad and Mom get to end the movie with a greater respect for their daughter, and a better relationship! Too deep? lol . Ya I thought so to. And all because this Movie brought out the best of 80s music and dance! Love ya guys/ladies!!!
