Militaries have known about gamification for centuries -- the practice of handing out medals is exactly this. Lord Robert Baden-Powell (hero of the Boer War) was particularly good at this, and developed gamified systems not only for his military scouts, but for boys who aspired to be scouts as well. These rulesets became the practices of the Boy Scouts.
During my master studies in 2015/16 we read a paper in the university about that topic. Someone tried to use gamification on diabetes medication for kids to get them to stay the course for taking the insulin and trying to keep the levels near optimal. While this can be a good thing, it never occurred to me at the time that the sinister applications are vast!
This conversation is a great example of why Jesus said don't try and store up treasures on Earth. All these "games" people play actually get them no where. And I'm not referring to actual video games, unless you think winning them somehow defines your success in life. Too many people are out there chasing the wrong rewards.
This is nothing new, it is common for the most recent generation to find old ideas, rebrand them and then congratulate themselves for inventing something new. Eg. A relatively recent TikTok trend is "silent walking" it is effectively going for a walk without your phone. They think it is sething new, but walking has been going on for at least 3 million years for homonims . Now offering incentives to alter behavior is 'gamifying' I have invented a new thing called repeated lung inflation and deflation. You may think this sounds a lot like breathing... But it couldn't be, I just invented it.
Skinner inspired pigeon-guided bombs were more accurate than other bombs at the time, but the project was abandoned. Do you know why? The military decided that it was just too weird.
Only Jesus Christ saves from hell. All have sinned (Romans 3:23 KJV). The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day (1st Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV). Jesus shed His blood for our sins (Ephesians 1:7 KJV). Getting water baptized DOESN'T save us (1st Corinthians 1:17 KJV). We are saved by grace through faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV).
Great interview. I hate social media. I've only been on it about a year and a half and have already dropped X. It brings out the worst in people. However, I don't agree with those who reject modernity either. They blame comfort for all the sins in the culture, forgetting that we had no indoor plumbing or electricity when we crucified the Son of God.
I normally love your interviews, which always offer interesting perspectives. However, today's interview was mostly word salad for me. Not compelling in the least, and offering nothing new. I'm afraid he's another highly educated and verbose young person with no real-world experience. I look forward to your regular show and next week's interview in the hope that the guest is more interesting.
I have friends who have just refused to play the game. They don't have any social media. They don't collect shopping points. They do not do rewards.

Excellent!
I always look forward to your interviews, Andrew, because they always offer plenty of food for thought.
Great conversation. I’m definitely interested in another interview. He is a super wise guy!

Drew, you have the most interesting and important conversations that I've found on RUclips. Thank you.
Coincidentally, I'm listening to this whilst playing a video game. 😆
This is clearly one of the most important issues of our time that is going on discussed and yet it is so pervasive and influential on our lives
an eye opener

True that competition and rewards is nothing new, but some of this is much more sneaky and insidious.
great interview. very informative. lots to think about.
Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is looking
Virtue signaling is the most inmoral behavior of our time.
Yes, it’s called hypocrisy
I love the intro❤ reminds me of the old antenna TV days! 📺
They were so focused on controlling the pigeons, they neglected to realize that they were the pigeons all along...
Says this pigeon.

Parallel economies are important to establish ASAP
This is an incredible and disturbing view of gaming because it seems so accurate.
Also, self gamification is just as much a scam as enforced gamification. It does not work long term.
If only the pigeons had revolted?

Thank You ….sometimes in this wicked world you need to go back to the Good News!!!! Many blessings upon you n yours👍
It was going to make people fitter, more ethical, greener.
Law of unintended consequences much?
Strange looking dude but really fascinating interview!

Policygenius is also an app, so a form of control, or not? :)
gamification and poinsts stats levels is or can be good but not by the left
When Shapiro had his hissy fit about Candace Owens it didn't take Klavan long to team up with his fellow '' tribesman''.
This didn’t have anything important to do with videogames,…boring.

I have doubts about Klavan's conversation to Christianity. I view it as more of a Trojan Horse sort of thing.
Who cares what you think?
@@lifeinthe80s you care, that's why you asked the question.
