Nobody's passport was stolen - it was a notepad made to look like one. Theo's parents were with him in Hawaii, but the return trip by Theo was to Paris where Sydney and Katy had already moved. Katy is Theo's sister. Not disjointed at all.

Hawaii is part of the US. You don't need a passport to go there if you're leaving the US.
