We tried our best to DESTROY this @AngelbirdTechnologies CFexpress Type A card reader, but we failed. But all that means is we have gotten our moneys worth. It's still fast, tough and reliable after being battle tested. A true premium product.

MacBooks (and most devices) are incompatible with usb 3.2 gen 2x2 btw. (Meaning you’ll be stuck at the stock usb 3 speed of 1GB/s) Weird that it isn’t thunderbolt / USB 4 at this price. (Granted, sd cards are rather slow, so I don’t think any card you plug in will go above the 10Gb/s USB, and it looks like you can only plug one card in.)
The solid connect thing is so smart! USB c in general has been cool but it’s such a loose port, I often have stuff disconnect.

I think you will find these card readers are designed with Macbooks in mind and are backwards compatible. I have tested them extensively across my older 15" Macbook Pro from 2012, 2014 Mac Mini and my M1 Mac Mini. And they work fine. You also have to remember that on Macs HALF of all connection bandwidth is dedicated to image data for 5k and 6k MAC monitors. SO all of these other brands (which also have) that claim thunderbolt 40GBs speed in data transfer will never happen. The run at the same speeds as these “slower rated” Angelbird card readers. CFexpress Type A isn't that fast, yet. There is an update coming but no manufacture has released products in the newer standard ….

That would be correct. This is just how we make content and that card CFexpress Type A reader is on our cart right now.

I rented an atomos Ninja for a music video shoot and it was the only piece of gear that has ever failed me so catastrophically. I got the “skippy the kangaroo” error meaning the recording was skipping frames. According to atomos this means the media was too slow but the media the rental provided was the angelbird sata ssd specifically sold for the ninja. It costs over two times as much a professional grade ssd from Samsung so I doubt it was too slow. (Over 2x markup over premium, when Angelbird does not make any nand flash storage to begin with.)
In the end I don’t know who’s hardware failed, atomos or Angelbird. Atomos is a shady company while Angelbird is mostly a reseller of flash storage (they have super cool design though.)
I’m guessing it was the ninjas fault but when I emailed, Angelbird asked me to send in the ssd as if I didn’t write that it was a rental.

What I say is this, never rent camera media as they do not come with report cards and may have surpassed the TBW threshold and started to fail. That could be any brand. As a DP you are better off owning camera media so one you get a copy of what you shoot and two you know where they are in their life cycle. And as a side note, I have had 5 ninja V’s fail on me in 1 year. SO I hear you there.
