L.A. police chief says officer shortage makes it harder to respond to some calls

  • Los Angeles is among cities nationwide trying to deal with shortages of police officers in their ranks. LAPD Interim Police Chief Dominic Choi says while emergency calls like crimes in progress have not been affected, non-emergency response times have grown. NBC News' Lester Holt reports.

      not true, i was at mockingbird mall in dallas the other day and the security guard called the police on me for "trespassing" and a cop showed up in 5 minutes and spoke to the guard and drove off

      They are having staffing problems, except the reason is officers being underpaid.
      LA- get abused but good pay.
      FL- good relations but bad pay.

      I did the math. That’s almost 2k a week. About 7.3k a month before taxes. That’s completely livable in Los Angeles. Kids? Idk but financial literacy pays way more than the 95k in the long run. I promise you.

    The criminals in LA are a different breed than other cities. It's under staffed because people don't want to deal with what's out there on the streets. The craziest, most violent derranged individuals are the ones you'll be encountering every day. Does anyone really want to deal with that for 90k?

    I live here and it's very obvious the shortage. Response time is long and the couple times I've called 911 the operator simply said that, relatively speaking, my call wasn't an emergency and didn't require a response(?)...go figure!

    With Gascon it's catch and release anyway. A lot of crimes that were felonies got downgraded to misdemeanors. I don't blame them.

    I would love to be an officer as a former military man. But I make more $ driving a truck and managing a team of drivers. And I can be arrested for making arrests. Raise the payroll and give me immunity to any crimes I may commit.

    I would disagree. LAPD has over 8300 and who many actually work patrol? Less than half. LAPD has too many officer who work nonpolice related type positions. How many offices work mounted detail on a full time basis? Also, many work motors and they are not required to answer calls. The number of motor officers can be reduced and put back into patrol cars.

      Most state's laws carrying firearms are at ages 21, other states (particularly conservative states with looser gun laws) allow 19

      Nope. The state has actually raised the minimum age to 21. You used to be able to start at 20.
