- Here is how you repair a classic 1980's Lasonic TRC-931 function switch.
These commonly break. Here's how to fix them.
This part is also used on the Lasonic TRC-920
You must first UNSOLDER the part from the main circuit board
The one on my trc-920 was busted as well. I fixed it, I fixed it a few years ago; I just superglued that gear back on the shaft, but I made the mistake of pulling that slider out too far, and the pins inside are now a little messed up. It does work, but the knob has to be in just the right place for each function to work properly. It's weird that lasonic didn't make the switch click between functions, you're just turning a loose knob between tape, radio, and phono. The band switch clicks, but the function one don't. Great video, I know this will help a lot of people.
Great video Chris, thank you for making it. 😎👍
You're very welcome
Thank you for this very helpful video on this geared selector switch, the absolute Achilles' heel of some Lasonic boomboxes. When I was shopping for a TRC-931, I was adamant that a broken selector switch was 100% an instant deal killer. I stuck to my guns and the one that I did eventually buy was in great condition and both switches work perfectly. If one ever breaks on me, I'll definitely refer to your video again so I can fix it.
For those that don't know, these Lasonic geared switches are very fragile so be extremely careful when using them. When you operate them, hold the knob tightly in your fingers so that the switch does not freely "slam" back and forth against the hard stop/limit shown in the video. That is what can cause the white plastic gear to break. If you move the switch very slowly between its positions and keep it from "slamming" from position to position, that also will help extend the life of the gear considerably.
For any Lasonic fans out there shopping for a TRC-920 or TRC-931, hopefully the boombox that you might be interested in buying was not originally owned by someone that was rough on its switches. But who knew that these old classic boomboxes would be so desirable today? Most of them were just considered disposable electronics back in the day and treated as such.
Thanks again for the great video!
Your welcome, glad it helped you out
I too have the Lasonic TRC-920 Model. One of the problems I had was similar to this. My FM/AM/SW1/SW2 Switch did not work properly. This was due to same problem that you mention. The little gear was broken into two, this seems like a common problem on these 920's and 931's. I have to say it was a real pain to desolder it from the board, have a good hour or two and lots of patience if you plan on repairing it yourself. Somebody really needs to make these for these boxes again.
thanks for your comment. there was a guy on ebay that sold replacement gears, but they sold out and that's it. Glad this video helped
I use a tool like this: www.ebay.com/itm/Desoldering-Pump-Solder-Sucker-Removal-Vacuum-Tool-with-Aluminum-Body-Teflon-Tip-/300771835247
Process takes 3 minutes ))
Good luck in your repair!
+Laoczi2007 Vladimir yep, solder sucker is the only way to go!
You can of course take advantage of this: www.ebay.com/p/chemtronics-10-50l-chem-wik-desoldering-braid-100-50ft/1129408419 But it will be much last longer and worse.
Thank you for the video!
I think that you are the best in the US specialist in repair Boombox!
+Laoczi2007 Vladimir thank you for your kind words

Thanks!
Thank you for this video!
Your welcome, I hope it helps
I found a Lasonic 920 on Ebay having the rotary 3 way switch broken and looking for replacement, this video might help repair that switch, providing that tiny gear didnt come out of the casing... The switch shaft if its roughed up on the end to where cant slide the gear back onto the shaft could be solved by using a DREMEL Hobbyist electric tool to sand down/refine the shaft so the gear slides firmly back onto the shaft, might want to add thin film of strong glue to gear, the type of glue that dont age and falls off like crazy glue. Most tape decks drive belts needs to be replaced and the cassette capstan head path with the roller wheel has to be cleaned as well
Thanks I donated what I could afford
Thank you
I need the plastic piece that goes on that the connect that to the actual button

Any possible way to re-wire /install a modern 3 position rotary switch having the long shaft that actually *clicks into position* for the tape, radio, and the AUX function?
it has been talked about, but to my knowledge no one has done it
Any Lasonic radios TRC-920 and 931 owners who had the bad 3 position function switch, would someone PLEASE be able to show a video of replacement modern rotary 3 position switch having the same length shaft, before and after to where its wired into these radios?
I need to buy that gear it's totally gone out of my Lasonic TRC-920. Does anyone have an extra one or no where I can buy one?
You might want to check on www.boomboxery.com
Ive got a Lasonic 920 model using exact same rotor 3 position switch, and the knob wont pull off. i dont see no hidden retaining screw preventing that knob from being pulled straight off,and i certainly dont want to break it by forcefully pulling too hard up on the function knob to get it to let go of that switch, what'd somebody do...glue the thing on?!
chances are, someone did glue it on :-(
Anybody know where I can get or who has a Gear replacement for the switch of a TRC 920
There was a guy on www.boomboxery.com named Trmmelmops who was making them out of brass
