My biggest problem with learning to carve was always finding a wide run clear of other people. I thought maybe I should override my instincts and take some risks, but seeing you be more cautious around other people I'm glad my instincts were right all along!
i would recommend going to less popular ski resors, that are not so crowded. Waking up early to be first on piste is also an option, but doesnt work for me heh
Yeah it can be difficult, I think the main thing is to get comfortable looking back up the hill whilst riding, I try to always be aware of who's coming down so that I don't get splattered!
i agree. But looking it on a brighter side is that uncontrollable element also keep your ability to make turns and adjustment quickly is very valuable too.
@malcolmmoore loved to hear that as well. Lots of these videos always look so effortless that sometimes I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. But it is just hard work to carve.
It's amazing how quickly you're adapting to posi. Particularly on the toe side, getting your right arm forward for some separation and counter-rotation in order to drop your hip in and keep your weight stacked. Great stuff!
Malcolm Moore I love your videos showcasing how to ride well in a laid back style. Very few instructional videos exhibit that so clearly and perfectly. It’s a style many of us would do well to emulate. This video is also awesome. I appreciate seeing you challenging yourself to ride in a different style and perfect another skill set. Your ripping some rad turns on the Shorty 🤘. Ive had 2 sessions on my 164w Shorty at the local snowdome, and i also wasn't happy with my heelside turns. Moved the bindings forward one insert , and it unleashed a beast . The pop out of the turn is unreal , cant wait to get it on a proper piste in January and let loose with the boards full potential 🙌
I hope we can put an end to the skidding culture and make brands produce more wide, carve-oriented boards because carving is where its at! :) thanks for exposing viewers to the art of riding on edge and props on your progress! 👊
Bindings look posi posi (18/12, maybe?) on this run. You can almost feel MM managing his arc with his weight transfer from front to balanced to back foot as he rips through the 'C'. Not sure after one viewing, but it looks like he can put a little extra pressure on the rear foot with this deck without it juddering. Nice work, MM.
oh man at the end I realized that I was smiling throughout the video. What a feeling... I am going to the French Alps for the first time in january and I just cannot wait. Your vids keep me hyped
Malcolm... you must have legs of steel. I could hear you push the turns and keep going non stop. I was getting tired just looking and listening to you carve those hills. Great video!
Been riding +30/+15 for a few months and it feels like a lot less effort to carve like that. I tried +40/+18 last weekend and that felt even better for toeside but harder to put pressure on my heelside at first. It was indoor so not ideal to test. Next week we're 8 days in Cervinia-Zermatt to test this out some more. Watching this makes me want to go right now though 😆
The snow's been lovely in Cervinia. Looks like we're in for a couple of big dumps towards the end of this week too! Just pray the wind doesn't blow it all away... That's the Cervinia special 😅
Real impressive carving given the fact that the run was chopped up, narrow and full of people. My riding really changed once I went posi posi. That heel side turn feels so sweet now! 🤙
Great video! Honestly reading the description and comments (maybe I'm misinterpreting it) but I feel like you're being harsh on yourself! This was great riding, you don't need to feel bad about all the puffing or justify that posi posi is new to you. As your channel is mostly instructive, it's nice to hear someone as experienced as you is still consciously thinking to yourself that you need to rebalance or fix your stance mid ride. Sometimes when watching people as good as yourself it just looks natural. As if it's zero effort. But it's a kind reminder to everyone else that even when an experienced rider is riding they are still thinking about all the basics!
Really slalom-esque carve-tastic stuff! A slalom racer I had the good fortune to ride with for a week, and was a great influence on me, talked about pretending to hold a barrel in front of you, putting it to one side or the other of the nose of the board as you turn. I kinda softened this aspect of my riding over time, but seeing this, I'm going posi posi on my next trip; +89 +89 I reckon!! 😁
Maybe next tutorial on how to carve on packed powder and uneven terrains. Those are always difficult especially when there are too many variables and you have to plan your trajectory.
Love it, Malc! Looks so good. Very inspiring. 🌊 Some really amazing turns on that firm/icy man made snow. 🔪 On your heel sides I can really see how much the posi angles helps getting you body over the front and edge. /Mats

After reconstructive shoulder surgery and two back surgeries, I find for me positive angles make it much easier for my body to initiate turns. This obviously takes away switch, but I’m 37 with a bunch of hardware inside my body 😂.
Great video. Stranda Shorty is definitely a lot of fun. But it has a bit of a learning curve if you ask us with the long front. Biggest regret is not getting the width version.
Thank you for sharing Malcom ! This is so educational and interesting to follow the progress of a professional . There was quite a few great turns in this first run ! Do you have a suggestion for improving my angulation on my heel side turn ? After years of booting out on my heel turns , I have hard time letting go now that I have a board wide enough. Love the Channel !
Love the live action with mic on . I began riding posi posi sometimes in the season with a nidecker tracer (asym) . I usually ride 18 -6 most of the times, 15 -9 on jib boards and 21 -3 on a 178 swallow tail board. I noticed I struggle with the fact the board feels torsionally stiffer when I ride posi posi (I have small feet It does not help). But if you take the time (3to 4 days) you learn how to transfer the weight from the front to the back foot. Once you get it , it feels like you are gliding on the edge especially on the backside edge. It is a really nice feeling. In pow i don't like it at all and I know some former alpine boarders who don't like it either. All in all I wouldn't ride posi posi all the time, but on a carve board in the morning with no one on the slope it is clearly something special every snowboarder should try. I have the chance to live in the "tarentaise" next to Valmorel and not very far from meribel and the 3 valleys. The huge slopes of Val Thorens are a dream for this.
Nice yeah, I'm the same, not sold on posi posi all the time, but it's definitely good fun..take that opportunity to live in the tarantaise, you won't regret it!
Nice to know, even a high end rider dislikes crowds!I start morning on my board, switch to skiis as the hillside population increases.Merry Christmas, Cheers Walker
Awesome video as always Malcolm! Do you always set your bindings that far back when riding posi posi? Do you ride posi posi on rougher terrain as well?
looks already great. I just came from a trip to Cervinia with my new Stranda Descender I can recognize some similarities... I had to throw myself over the nose, much more than with all mountain boards. And yes it is a workout, legs firing. I like Stranda in the sense it is something new for me but these boards demand strong technique and/or physique and then the reward is immense. If I didn't exaggerate the body's down and up movements, the board was driving me at 165lbs with the 161... great boards for the Alps. Was your experience similar with the shorty? Thanks
Neatly executed, very nice. I've personally been strugglinh with soft boot posi-posi, such as the same 30-15. On one edge it feels a lot better but equally so it's a lot worse for the other edge. Technique in such position is feeling quite a bit similar to hard boot snowboard but not that easy to execute with soft boots. Last couple of years I've bree rocking Donek Knapton Twin board, actually wide board, weist measures 305mm, flex is stiff (8/10), and radius is also couple of meters bigger than usual boards. Amazing board. Hoping to take it to Alps sometime to give it a proper ride as so far I've been riding on local small slopes (Estonia-Kiviõli).
Yeah I was looking at that board for a while, would be keen to try it one day.. ideally I would like to have my back foot closer to zero but I need to turn it out like that to avoid boot drag
@@malcolmmoore I would be happily lend it out but living in Estonia and once a year at best I make it to somewhere in Alps :D Maybe, just maybe, there is someone around your area that has one. More than likely there is one, it's worth to make a small appeal in one of your videos ;) and to see you rocking one of those boards! If you do happen to visit EE for some reason during the winter time (maybe to visit Tallinn old town during December due to Christmas decorations or etc), let me know.
Cool to see you try to adopt it! The video you posted you still said you wasn't sure you'll ever try it again and see where you are :-) I like the idea of someone learning a new skill and sticking microphone on them. Its very recognisable to hear all those mantras XD

Hi, would love to see video of you shoving movements what you make on snowboard but without snowboard just to learn mechanism of movements and what movement is doing what. For examle how it look when you knee steer and how that reflect on the board, the movement of the board and the path you take with that movement.
Hi Malcom!:) Awesome video! Is your daily driver still the Amplid Dada? Are there any other wide boards you would personally recommend? Currently riding the Warpig but looking for something that would top it (boot size 12).
Not really on the dada anymore it's pretty trashed now. I'm using the spring break powder twin as my main board for this season. It's nothing special and it's not that stiff, but it does the job and it's pretty wide. It's been quite a few years since I was on the warpig to be honest too!
Awesome video as usual! Trying to figure out what to take to Japan. For a big board, trying to decide between Shorty, Dart, or Surfari. Thoughts? Opinions mush appreciated.
Only ridden the shorty out of those, but I would say you can't go wrong with any of those! The dart would be bottom of my list, purely as it doesn't have a beefy enough waist for me, but if you don't have large feet then it's not an issue.
Another great video malcolm. I can see your riding posi posi which i do too but yours look more angled than mine. Can I ask your stance angles please. I know it's personal preference but just interested
I'm riding +30 +15, and I've actually had to now put the back foot to +18. I don't love having the back foot turned forward that much but I need to do it in order to avoid boot drag unfortunately! +27 +12 would probably be my ideal angles when riding posi posi but most boards aren't wide enough for me to do that.
Malcom, can you teach us how to ride busy slopes safely? On a lot of your videos you board on almost empty slopes. Because of my kids I can only board in the kids schoolvacation end of february. I'm always scared I am going to board into someone. Can you please give us some usefull tips on this subject? Many thanks from a huge fan from the Netherlands.
Great lines! I have been to Alpe d´Huez twice and those runs look very familiar. How does the Stranda Shorty compare to the Biru, as you have ridden both? I am interested in either of these. Currently I am on a custom Donek Incline (160, 29cm wide, 1,79 height, 73kg, Size 9 boots). I think I need something a bit more nimble and versatile and want to go back in width, so 27cm would be fine. I mostly ride piste with the occasional, opportunistic powder if it has snowed. I want to carve if there is enough space around, but I also ride with my family on holidays, so it can be crowded and chopped up in afternoons.
Biru can definitely be an all mountain board as well as an aggressive carver. I haven't tried the shorty much yet and when I have ridden it I've only really been trying to do big carves like in this video. Due to its longer length you can feel more flex through the board so it's got nice rebound edge to edge. I think both will be great in powder but the shorty will be better at bigger drawn out turns. For the conditions you describe with the family the Biru is probably the better option.
Well the posi-posi stance angles obviously work for carving. Would you want to ride it all the time though? It would feel pretty awkward for jibbing, and as for riding switch...
Malcolm impressive riding. one quick question I forget if you already answered before: for posi-posi stance, do you need to reduce the highback forward lean of your front foot, or it does not matter? I saw some soft boot rider with creazy angle (>+40) does this.
Love the commentary 😂 It's good seeing you try different setups / equipment. Would you be open to doing a video talking about how important equipment (board, boots, bindings) really is when it comes to being able to snowboard well and make good, carved turns? For example, I'd be really interested to see you riding a softer board (eg a freestyle focused board) aggressively and see what's possible without people like me blaming our gear haha!
I'm riding the spring break powder twin right now, which I can still carve pretty well despite that not being it's forte. I think the main difference is when the conditions are hard/icy, that's when softer boards don't do so well. Like I wouldn't have been carving that final section on that board!
Could be just me cause im out of shape but do you find posi posi targets the quads a lot more? I find my quads burning in posi posi vs duck when carving
They've just got a different feeling, they can both carve very well. The Biru is probably more usable all around the mountain and can quite happily be ridden in a duck stance, whereas I feel like the shorty really lends itself to this style of riding with a posi posi stance.
4:16: "Ooh, it is getting icy here!!" - *proceeds to do the finest and deepest carving of the video* 🤣. But, for safety's sake, if you are taking up the whole piste on an icy choke point, as you close your turns harder as you were doing there, please, please, take a quick glance up the hill, before you initiate the next. At 4:47, that could have been a bad one with that fast-mover. As an old codger now with a dodgy knee, I do appreciate biomechanics more these days. Try this: stand on flat groudn in your normal posi-posi stance, with your knees bent, and turn your hips and shoulders as much as you can for your heel-side turn. Now drop your rear knee a bit more than your front knee, and you will be able to turn your upper body a few more degrees - enough to glance up that hill...and it may even give you just that bit more torsional flex and lower COG in the board to lock in that heel-side. I mean it looked great on chase-cam, but you were complaining about it earlier, so I guess you didn't have that fully locked-in secure feeling right? This is a posi-posi advantage, I don't think this works for duck, not that I am not likely to ever try that, as with my large feet, my angles are literally double yours even on wide boards!! Props to (unacknowledged) chase-cammer, at 1:51 under pressure, I know this feeling! Camera out on hand tracking subject, head on a swivel looking around for danger. Pat your head, rub your tummy.😉
I honestly can't think of any "bad ones" as they're all pretty wide. I would suggest that if you do the "Serenne" to do it in the morning with good visibility, as it can get pretty cut up in the afternoon with groups of skiers side sliding down any difficult parts.
This is bartavelles, it's always pretty quiet and I do a lot of my filming on this run for that reason. School holidays are a bit manic though, so sometimes you just need to hang around a bit for quieter slopes, and ride over lunch when people are at the restaurants!
Honest opinion on the shorty Well what did u think Looks like some skid on heel side never rode both feet positive position Great carving mate Ryan would be proud cheers buddy hit me up. Gonna go thrash the super pig Peace brother 🤙
Finally posi posi, I tried it first thanks to Lars and, I'm not going back because in duck stance I never had so much control and I was skidding a lot. Posi posi is kinda forcing you to learn proper techique. 30/39 and I feel so LOCKED IN
Yeah cheater is awesome, I've had a few turns on it, I like how the shorty is more versatile though. We'll see, maybe Matts will send me a cheater if this video hits 500k... 🤔

Nice to know, even a high end rider dislikes crowds!I start morning on my board, switch to skiis as the hillside population increases.Merry Christmas, Cheers Walker
Merry Christmas!
Very impressive
Thanks
Awseome tunrs man!! where is this? what resort? Switzerland I beleive?
It's Alpe d'Huez in France 👊
@@malcolmmoorebeautiful carves on the red there! Which red slope is this in alpe dhuez?
Belvedere into bartavelles into rousses!
@@malcolmmoore I would be happily lend it out but living in Estonia and once a year at best I make it to somewhere in Alps :D
Maybe, just maybe, there is someone around your area that has one.
The video you posted you still said you wasn't sure you'll ever try it again and see where you are :-)
I like the idea of someone learning a new skill and sticking microphone on them. Its very recognisable to hear all those mantras XD
Yeah I wasn't sure whether to post it to be honest, as its a long way from perfect, but I had fun and that was the main thing! It's all a process!
@malcolmmoore and it's nice to see your role models struggle once in a while ;-p
@@malcolmmooreThis is exactly why it is so valuable and enjoyable. Nice to hear the coach self-coaching, and good to see the coach learning turn by turn.
Burning 🔥 legs after that drop😊
Hi, would love to see video of you shoving movements what you make on snowboard but without snowboard just to learn mechanism of movements and what movement is doing what.
For examle how it look when you knee steer and how that reflect on the board, the movement of the board and the path you take with that movement.
Noted!
OMFG, what a rocket! 💥💥💥
It's a beast, but also really rideable at slower speeds too!
Wow amazing
I feel so much better about huffing and puffing while I carve now 😅
Fantastic riding as always! Did you incrementally add posi to the back foot or just go straight to +15?
full send brother!!
It's very attainable!
@malcolmmoore thanks malcolm I'm only a size uk 8 so not to much of a problem . I'm on plus 21 plus 3 but may go up a bit and try it out
Malcom, can you teach us how to ride busy slopes safely? On a lot of your videos you board on almost empty slopes. Because of my kids I can only board in the kids schoolvacation end of february. I'm always scared I am going to board into someone. Can you please give us some usefull tips on this subject? Many thanks from a huge fan from the Netherlands.

This one might be a good starting point!
It is crazy how good u do snowboarding being that big and tall
Legs on 🔥
Great run!
_"It's in the painter, not the brush!"_ ✨
Check out his video review of the Salomon Dancehaul. It’s a softer, tapered, directional board and he absolutely rips on it.
I'm riding the spring break powder twin right now, which I can still carve pretty well despite that not being it's forte. I think the main difference is when the conditions are hard/icy, that's when softer boards don't do so well. Like I wouldn't have been carving that final section on that board!
@@bfosterkayaking great shout. Would love to try a volume shifted board, they seem great
@@malcolmmoore that's really good to know, especially about the less grippy conditions being where they'd struggle. Cheers!
Could be just me cause im out of shape but do you find posi posi targets the quads a lot more? I find my quads burning in posi posi vs duck when carving
TOP cruising!!
Merci!
Hey Malcom, whats the difference between the stranda shorty and the stranda biru. Whats your favorite for a daily carver? Best
They've just got a different feeling, they can both carve very well. The Biru is probably more usable all around the mountain and can quite happily be ridden in a duck stance, whereas I feel like the shorty really lends itself to this style of riding with a posi posi stance.
Almost a dramatic end to the vid there! 😀
Haha, looked worse on video!
where and which sky resort is this one?
Alpe d'Huez in France 🙌
Someone doesn't skip leg day!
What are the best runs in Alpe D'Huez for boarders? Heading there in Feb next year
I honestly can't think of any "bad ones" as they're all pretty wide.
How does this thing handle mid west ice?
Not sure to be honest as I've never ridden over there, but it dealt with the icy slopes here pretty well!
where's the online course for this?
Haha, it's coming, when I figure it out myself!
Looks like 2025 will be posi for a lot of people.
Nice ride :-)
Thanks!
Are you riding posi posi Malcom?
Read the title of the video.
I am indeed!
@@maness2112 don’t think it was in the original title

Honest opinion on the shorty Well what did u think Looks like some skid on heel side never rode both feet positive position Great carving mate Ryan would be proud cheers buddy hit me up. Gonna go thrash the super pig Peace brother 🤙
Finally posi posi, I tried it first thanks to Lars and, I'm not going back because in duck stance I never had so much control and I was skidding a lot. Posi posi is kinda forcing you to learn proper techique. 30/39 and I feel so LOCKED IN
Good stuff!
Impressive!! Be great to see you on a Cheater!
That indeed
I've seen him on a Cheater ;-) Live! Looked great! 🙂
Yeah cheater is awesome, I've had a few turns on it, I like how the shorty is more versatile though. We'll see, maybe Matts will send me a cheater if this video hits 500k... 🤔
Hi Bro , posi/posi...??🧐😬 What dou you think this stranda ? Biru , Cheater are very hopeful.🤔
Wow, all that turning looked and sounded really tiring.
I'd be at the bottom by now 😂 too much effort it's hard enough
