Howard the Duck: The Movie Marvel (and George Lucas) Would Like to Forget

  • Howard the Duck was one of the biggest financial flops of the 1980s. It did so poorly that the two heads of the studio allegedly got into a fistfight over who greenlit it. But what does that have to do with Marvel? Let us explain.
Before there was an entire money-making studio dedicated to pumping out movies and tv shows based on the vast and ever-expanding catalogue of Marvel Comics characters- we were seeing the likes of Sam Raimi making the Sony Spider-Man trilogy and Johnathan Hensleigh delivering an interesting take on The Punisher. Even before that, we had the iconic Blade movies and some solid X-Men fare- all movies that we’ve covered in previous episodes of the show... Or have we?
See, it’s easy to do a Marvel series that praises the Raimi trilogy, and roasts the goofiness of the Tim Story Fantastic Four films- but, today is going to be one hell of a throwback for any Marvel fan who grew up in the 1980’s. Before the dawn of mutants and the day-walking vampire hunters, there was a much different Marvel hero blasting their way into the zeitgeist and giving us what many consider to be the true beginning of Marvel Cinema... I guess, not including the 70’s Japanese Spider-Man film or the small screen Captain America joint.
So, let’s wind the clocks back to 1986 and revisit the first theatrically released film based on a Marvel character. It's a story about belonging, fulfilling your purpose against all odds, and a women’s biker gang called Satan’s Sluts. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. I guess I’ll just start by saying... In the beginning, there was Howard the Duck!

Lea Thompson is the peck of hotness in this movie. At one part when you see her getting dragged by Dr. Jennings as a monster and she kicking her feet you can see extra if you know what I mean. I'm so surprise that the film makers didn't take that out or edit so you wont see her vagina. No joke you can see it better on blue ray HDdvd or 4Kdvd. For anyone who had a crash on Lea Thomson as a teen. Your welcome lol. More of a reason to go back ;)

My main problem with it feels like it can't decide if it wants to be an edgy sci-fi comedy or a kids film about a duck - one minute giving us dark, disturbing, or sexual moments, and the next giving us 1970s Scooby Doo-clone-grade dad joke dialogue and comedy.

I'm going to give this movie (and others in the bad movie category like Showgirls, Waterworld and Battlefield Earth) some praise. Now on a level they're still bad movies and there's a reason why they flopped on screen. This one in particular was pretty bizarre what with it featuring anthropomorphic ducks showing boobs and Howard and a scantily clad Lea Thompson almost doing what i can describe as borderline bestiality.
And yet just the fact that it took risks makes me have respect for. Particularly if you compare it to modern movies where they either extend franchises thin (Expendables), burned out complete genres like the comic hero genre, or just do remakes of classic movies with political messages thrown in. In other words, modern movies won't take a leap into the unknown and would stick to the same tired formulas. And it's still a bad movie but its got a certain charm and wackiness to it that actually makes it likeable.
That being said, i really hope they never remake it. I fear they're going to have actual furries in it

Lea Thompson, an animal and her son; it's a wonder any kid grew up normal in the 80s.

As far as I know this movie is another universe in the Marvel Multiverse and this Howard is another variant of Howard from the MCU

Ah, so glad more and more people are around to Howard the Duck. Is it some Oscar worthy film that will change your life? No. Is it a fun, funny, actiony romp that has very odd humor and even more oddly odd sexual innuendo for supposedly a kid friendly movie? Yup. The music is awesome. The Dark Overlord of the Universe is awesome (minus the actor playing him being a pedo basically, sigh) and Lea Thompson seals it.
