M my mother in law did a lot of there years ago. I tried and didn't turn out well. Do I put on more than one coat. Don't remember if I coated front side and back side. Can you use magazine type paper and do you just cut up used tea bag? She did not use tea bags.
I learned this technique about 30 years ago when I was having a folk art painting phase. It was my first introduction to decoupage. Back then the purpose was for thinning out a picture that was on thicker paper and postcards, so there was much less of a line/step down between the edge of the picture and the piece it was being glued onto. In the process back then we did several coats of a modpodge like product (I can’t remember what it was, I think we used watered down PVA) but each coat was painted on in a different direction. Ie coat 1 was painted north to south, coat 2 was east to west and that was repeated many times on the front only. If you coat the back of the picture the water won’t be able to penetrate the paper to then be able to rub off the paper. Also back then the reason for several coats of modpodge was because the picture was not put onto anything else first. So basically you end up with the very top layer of the picture adhered to dry glue. So it needed to be quite a thick layer to give it structure. If you are going to put your picture on something first you shouldn’t need to do too many layers of modpodge. I hope I have made sense and that it was helpful
