      It certainly was fun, and a great race for Dragonfly. Our Dragonfly 28 not only won the multihull class 🏆 but was 15th fastest out of all 1,100+ entries on elapsed time.

    Fast, beautiful sailing. Btw, I broke my arm by handling a mainsheet like that. I more than broke it. I shattered it into pieces. Please be careful.

    • @DragonflyTrimarans-UK
      @DragonflyTrimarans-UK  Год назад +3

      Sorry to hear about your injury, and hope you've made a full recovery.
      Thanks for your comments, and I agree no-one should stand in the way of the sheet during a gybe.
      It may be hard to see clearly in the video, but we pull the mainsheet falls aft mid-gybe, to flatten the sail and initiate an earlier (and therefore softer) gybe. The sheet pulls away from the helm as it loads up again, not towards anyone.
      When sailing with more crew (or when cruising), the mainsheet trimmer can sheet in pre-gybe for the same effect, then ease again when the sail crosses

    • @barrydavies2977
      @barrydavies2977 Год назад +1

      @@DragonflyTrimarans-UK Thanks. It was over 40 years ago, so my arm did mend. It's not completely straight or as long as the other one, but it didn't stop me sailing. To be fair, my mainsheet had a little more slack than yours, so it was 100% my own fault. But I was concerned that others would see the way that you gybed, but not see the danger. Far safer to haul in on the tail of the sheet and let it out to absorb the shock.

      Thanks for watching. Dragonfly trimarans are extremely sea-worthy, and have crossed oceans, and even circumnavigated.That part of the race course is open to the Atlantic, and it was rougher earlier with up to 30 kts. We gybe close inshore there to keep clear of the tidal overfalls, so we can sail faster.

      Hvala, pratim ovaj tip trimarana, u bližoj budučnosti bi jedan kupio, super je sklapanje bočnih trupova što u marinama omogučuje mjesečni vez oko 300€ i duži boravak u brodu preko cijele godine.
      Kad usporedim cijenu najma manjeg za tjedan dana i ovog malog trimarana...

    • @DragonflyTrimarans-UK
      @DragonflyTrimarans-UK  Год назад +2

      Thanks. It's usually wind-over-tide on that leg, so there's much better sea state close inshore where the tide is weaker. Also as we fly an asymmetric spinnaker, we usually sail hotter angles than conventional yachts, and therefore make more gybes.

  • @deankruse2891
    @deankruse2891 Год назад +3

    Well balanced boat

    • @DragonflyTrimarans-UK
      @DragonflyTrimarans-UK  Год назад +3

      Thanks for watching. A trimaran is naturally balanced. As a Dragonfly heels (to about 10 degrees max), the leeward hull is immersed deeper, so the centre of drag moves outboard to remain aligned below the centre of effort of the rig. Therefore the helm remains light, and the boat is agile and responsive.

  • @USA4thewin
    @USA4thewin 11 месяцев назад +1

    damn good sailing ,, I was wondering if i can use the asymmetrical spinnaker in those conditions

    • @DragonflyTrimarans-UK
      @DragonflyTrimarans-UK  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. A Dragonfly is incredibly stable and responsive, as well as fast. Therefore the spi is easy to fly, although we recommend building experience before flying it in stronger winds

      Thanks for your comment. Dragonfly wings are supported by waterstays, which triangulate the wing and therefore remove bending loads in the Swing Wing mounts while sailing. These dyeform wires (with white plastic covers), run from low down on the centre hull to the outboard end of the wings, and are visible on the video.

  • @stf0146
    @stf0146 9 месяцев назад +1

    Thanks for the video. Looks like a great boat to sail.
    What size asym were you flying in this race? Looks smaller than the 60m2 specified in Dragonfly brochure.
    Noticed the asym sheets lead inside the side stays(shrouds), is this the norm or was this because the angles were hotter in this race conditions?
    Thanks again for the video.... hoping for more of such videos to come.

    • @DragonflyTrimarans-UK
      @DragonflyTrimarans-UK  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching and well spotted - that asymmetric spinnaker is smaller and flatter than the factory one, but big enough that day! Spi sheets are usually led inboard, due to wide beam and relatively low apparent wind angle at speed

    What kind of speed were you doing? (Never mind - just saw the comment above...) And ditto the comment about how dry you looked! The sea state was lumpy and I would've expected a lot more water in the cockpit. And it looked like you had finger tip control. Very impressive.

    It's not even 0.5 meters and the boat is diving in the water. It would be impossible to go sailing on a gale.

    • @DragonflyTrimarans-UK
      @DragonflyTrimarans-UK  11 месяцев назад +4

      Thanks for watching, but where’s the diving in that video? There’s some spray as the leeward bow cuts through the waves we overtook, but that’s about it and we stayed pretty dry.
      Waves were much bigger than 0.5m round the back of the island. However this clip is gybing inshore of the tidal overfalls off St Cats, where it was flatter.
      If it was windier, we’d have put another reef in, and taken the spinnaker down.

    That flag should not be flown on it's own. Mike indicates to other vessels "I am stopped". I can't tell whether Sierra is also being flown which would be appropriate for this scenario since both Mike and Sierra together indicates "I am undergoing speed trials".

      Thanks for your comment. 'M' was the designated class flag for the Multihulls, in this annual race round the Isle of Wight (UK) with a fleet of nearly 1,000 boats.
