This last week in Portugal has been a harrowing one for everyone, as wildfires raged across Northern Portugal. We were so fortunate to be spared any damage to our property, and we are safe. Our hearts go out to all of those who lost so much. The devastation is truly heartbreaking. This was our experience of the week, and we wanted to say the hugest thank you to all of you who reached out with messages of love and concern for our home, and our family. It meant the absolute world to us.

I hope you guys are all doing okay I think you should invest in an air conditioner that will help you when you have fires around you to clean your air or an air purifier of some sort used them a lot over here in New Hampshire in Canada and when there's fires it helps to keep the air clean in the inside
You need to wet your towels that you put underneath the door in the cracks of your windows or whatever that will help more to keep the smoke out if they're wet

If you have an air purifier in the house, make sure it’s running
On the bright side, all that ash is good for the trees and the fruit trees it’s nourishment. I know it’s sad but in the long run, it’s mother nature cleaning out all the crap in the forest the dead trees the stuff that is laying in the woods, some of the tree seeds need that fire to burst to life, believe it or not
I’m just crying after seeing all Diogos bee hives were burned. So much love to everyone in Northern Portugal.

Hello Newby's... so sorry for Diogo's loss. Wild fires seem to be a worldwide problem. There are bee farmers in the US that have their bee hives placed (permanently) on flatbed trucks. They "rent" the bees out to fruit farmers to pollinate their orchards. Diogo could do this and move the hives to safety. In New York State, counties have funded the construction of medium sized ponds(about 1acre) for firefighters to use in case of remote fires. So glad you are safe. Tara, your head ache could be caused by the smoke and worry. Keep safe.❤❤❤

What a great comment. We are in central Portugal and we found bees living under the stairs. I don’t have any knowledge on how to take care of them. Wish I knew someone who would take them into proper hive 😍 Diogo is probably too far away from us. We are near Pedrogao Grande, Leiria.

Hi Tara and John, I was evacuated last summer with 10 minutes notice, when I opened my door the wall of flames was only feet away. The wind had unexpectedly changed and put my little town of Osoyoos at risk. I understand that feeling of vulnerability and bewilderment. Thank you for caring for your community and our environment, please take care of yourselves and those precious boys.
I have just watched The Scotters vlog, which was heartbreaking. It has undoubtedly been a really scary week for thousands of people in Portugal. Without watching these vlogs and seeing the reality of the affect of forest fires on ordinary people thousands of miles away, I would have caught a clip on the BBC News, thought how sad it was and then got on with my life. The thought of having to make the decision to leave my home and everything I had worked for or risk the safety of my family has resonated with me and my heart goes out to everyone in Portugal who has been affected 🥰❤️🐝🐝

That was amazing in about 24 hours. Now, the Scooters came on and I am watching you all now. Just over 2 hours later. The fund is up over 2500. I live in Northeastern Ontario Canada where forest fires are a common occurrence each summer usually brought on by lightning strikes and I can assure you that forest fires can definitely jump lakes and rivers, so don’t think the river separating you will protect you from a forest fire. Be safe. Be prepared. ❤️

Yes. Reminds me of the Pestigo fire in Wisc.1871. The river saved some but many people perished. Days before the residents were stuffing cracks in their doors as well. Ash everywhere. The only place the fire didn't touch was a miraculous story, went completely around a patch of land. So glad you guys are safe!
I wrote the same from California. A river is absolutely nothing. Newbys must educate themselves on fire safety and consider it when doing their new build.

Will be glad for a “normal” video Wednesday because it will mean the stress and danger have passed. It still amazes me that people continue to complain and feel their criticism is so important it needs to be posted. Relieved to hear that all of you are OK, and the farm unscathed. Devastating news about so much destruction around you. Yesterday, afternoon, Here on our island in the Aegean, I heard the dreaded sound of helicopters, flying low over our house. They were filling with water from the bay below to put out a blaze over the mountains from us. I can relate to the Erie yellow haze, the acrid smell of the smoke, And the heartbreak of ashes falling. Keep safe❤️

That water pond becomes even more important to have in case of a fire emergency. Better get a hose and a pump.
Make sure the roof of your new house is made of concrete ( with terracotta tile) on top and install fire sprinklers

They cleared a lot of land and the hills to have extra fire protection too .
For your safety, you need to clear around your house more.

When we visited Portugal years ago near Cabaceiras in the North, there were loads of fires as well. As you say normally they put them out very quickly and nobody is too bothered about it but this one seemed a lot worse! Good to see nothing major happened to you guys!

Ugh. I live in southern California and know all too well what you experienced. The Woolsey Fire 2018 burned through our community clear through the Santa Monica Mountains to the beaches of Malibu. Evacuation timing should be taken very seriously (as you did) because winding mountain roads, closures, and evacuation traffic congestion are realities. It is so humbling to have firefighters come from everywhere to save homes and property. The devastation to wildlife and open land is heartbreaking and linger long after the burn smell is gone-not to mention neighbors' loss of homes. I'm so grateful your land was spared and wish you all the best as you and your community recover.

As an Australian, I can relate to not knowing to leave or stay, as the wind turns so fast, we didn’t get a choice and were ordered to evacuate by police. We were safe, and that all that matters in the end. So grateful for the emergency services. I’m so happy you are safe and so sorry for everyone around you that has lost anyone or anything 💞💞💞
Here in the US, if the fires are big enough, strong enough...close enough...the embers can fly over a small river, road, and such to start fires farther away...never underestimate the power of the wind and the fires...I cannot imagine being a young family facing decisions you both were dealing with...having a good plans to put in place to try get thru...my heart goes out to all affected

I am Australian and we know well the devastation of wild-fires. These fires can move so fast and if you don't stay vigilant and prepare to leave before it's too close no property is worth more than your lives.
Here in Australia we had 103 people who were killed by bush fires in one day when their area got cut off we call it Black Saturday. I also vividly remember living on the edge of Sydney and had to drive up into the nearby hills to help my family get their horses out. I had to lead two horses down the middle of a country road with fires on both sides of the road. It was terrifying. The sound of the fire racing up the valley sounded like an approaching freight train. The fire-fighters are true heroes they put their lives in danger to protect others and their properties.

Unfortunately we lost 7 brave people that were fighting the fires! Every year is the same and we Portuguese are fed up with the government that keep doing nothing serious about it.
90% of those are man made due to economic reasons and also because people are sick and love see burning for whatever reason.
Please keep your farm save and clean the surroundings vegetation just to avoid any higher risk.❤

Hello Newby's ❤ I have kept you all in my prayers.We moved to our dream home in Mangualde last weekend ,it's not been the start we'd anticipated - the largest fire in history here.Couldn't agree more about the energy & the raging headache, the eerie light, the ash raining down, the wind!!!
Portugal runs on kindness, the firefighters are absolute heroes, risking their lives to keep strangers safe!!!

I am so sorry everyone. Yes, when it happens the energy is so charge, stress is high, not much sleep, ash every where, headaches happen lack of oxygen and smelling the fires. John, for having experienced it here in Chile, the river does not stop the fire….the ash is brought by the wind everywhere including the other side of the river. It is a very difficult time of year when there hasn’t been a drop of water for months and fire season starts. Even worse is when it was started by humans. Anyways I am happy to hear it rained heavily which will help stop the blaze from spreading however don’t think it is finish because fire can continue underneath the soil through roots and set a tree on fire that way. Please stay safe and have an evacuation plan in place. I am really happy to see that we were all together able to reach your goal and hoping for more as there are I am sure a lot of people in need right now. Happy to hear that you will be hosting 16 bee hives on your property over the winter which will give Diogo hope that in the Spring he will be able to put these hives where they are most needed to pollinate trees and flowers in your area. So very glad you were able to film and post this -- it means all survived and are headed toward wholeness and "normalcy" again. Ironically, I am in Portugal for a month-long exploratory visit. This smoky week, I've been in Guimaraes, with original plans to do day trips from here. nope, nopity nope, nope, nope. In Greece last year almost every fire was in Places where the had plans to put Windcraftfields. Please have this in mind. Stay save and please God help 🙏🙏🙏

Oh, guys, my heart is with you. Been through it myself and my parents' house completely burned down in a wildfire and they were in their 80's. We/they survived with the outpouring of love and resources from the community. Sent money and love to Diogo to help heal.

It’s heartbreaking 💔
So scary, and so sad about all the losses of homes, lives, land and bees. Three years ago during Covid lockdowns, here in Turkey we had a terrible forest fire close to our home, with smoke pouring over the top of our hill. We had packed an emergency bag and said if we saw flames we would have to leave. 4 helicopters were working for hours, flying back and forth over the house with water from the sea. The next morning I got up really early and drove round to see the aftermath. Eerily beautiful and other-worldly, but we had lost a huge area of pine forest covering an entire side of the mountain. The fireman had been working all night and were resting on the ground in the cemetery. All I could say was thank you, thank you, thank you, in Turkish. So grateful. I hope your rains come soon and people can begin to rebuild their lives. So sad about Diogo’s bees and wonderful to be able to support the regeneration of the local bee population. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

One of my earliest memories is of seeing my brother in flames Tara. I have more than a healthy respect for fire and how destructive it can be. I'm so sorry that you have all gone through this and for the loss in your community. Its heart breakaing that Diogo lost his bees and had such a big impact on his farm. What a blessing that you have helped facilitate the rebuilding of what he has lost.
We have dealt with wildfires in the Pacific Northwesr for years, every summer,and we had a year where it encroached into the city. We wear masks outside because the tiny particles can get into your lungs and cause inflammation and breathing issues. Also for the indoor air, we had an air purifier on full blast. You can also get box fans and tape a hepa furnace filter to the back. Our filters would turn brown. It was awful. Sending love and lot of prayer for safety and provision.

I also live in Wyoming. The smoke has been hanging in the air most of the summer. The fires have been widespread. I understand the emotions. Making a plan is essential. Be safe.

So glad to hear that you are safe. The decision to stay or leave is always so difficult. Many years ago I had to face that choice, we were under evacuation notice form a huge fire. fortunately, we had two vehicles so I packed up our kids and the dog and drove south away from the fires while the highway was open. My then husband was designated as essential for emergency situations so he had to stay behind.I remember the choking smoke, red sky and weird feeling. I hope the rains arrive soon and the fires will be out or at least under control.

We feel your pain since we have often experienced the same phenomenon here with fires in Central British Columbia, Canada. And I can't believe that anyone would consider you lazy. This week made me aware that all water pumps for mains water and at our wells need electricity. I think the only way around losing the ability to water one's property is to have a generator or solar power. When you get your pond set up you should consider it to be a secondary source of water to pump from, and have a pump. Tuesday I left my car out, facing the only exit road. I had previously figured out how to open the gate without electricity. I used the time I had to put my important items and animal kennels in the car. I moved everything wooden off the porch to the furtherest reaches of the garden and filled buckets and watering cans with water. While monitoring the fires I also mapped my route out of my area as the normal routes north and west were closed.
It was an exercise because I didn't have to leave in the end. But only because the wind blew the fire away from my village.

We were looking at property to buy, around Oliveira do Hospital & the Alva valley, before moving North, ran straight into the fires. It must your worst nightmare, when you see the smoke clouds coming towards your lovely property, and there's nothing you can do. Heard you had torrential rain up there, so that's great news. Being surrounded by fires is such a humbling experience. Here in Capetown 's souther peninsula, we experienced it first hand last December. The fire fighters and volunteers are such heroes. Im so glad you are safe❤

Although we have had devastating wild fires in Canada, they have been far away, and I have not known anybody affected by them, so although concerning it hasn't felt all that real to me.
I have been so worried about you and your family and others like, The Scotters. Although I am only a subscriber over the years, you guys have become like a huge family to me. You have shown me how real this is.
Your emotions, concerns and devastation to others have shown though on this vlog. I hope it will educate us all that we all need to do so much more.
