Trucking and Freight Market March 6: Capacity Started INCREASING Again?!

  • The most concerning thing about trucking and the freight market is capacity. Realistically, we can boil all the issues to the fact that there are simply too many trucks and not enough volume for all of them. And as of last week, for the first time in a year, we are seeing that capacity increased by over 100 carriers. Hopefully, this is just a one time phenomenon and not a trend.

There is opportunities in every economic environment, this one is very long and we are heading to 23 months in a row where things are rough price and volume wise . I am a huge of relationships and walking into local shippers and likewise wherever i have delivered with my own trucks i have asked my drivers to introduce themselves to neighbourhood shippers whereever we have trucks constantly . Building lanes like this still works . Keep on trucking folks.

Many times is paying crap to get into this bad spot…..so how many mistakes can you afford to make?…it cost money to make money.
Rather parked than ruined my equipment to the ground….at least I don’t have to worry about those huge repair bills….I’m talking about those bills that could bankrupt or it will put a trucker in bills to be paid for so long even if the market will recover by next year….not this year almost certain.

I was loading yesterday and the truck next to me getting loaded was inactive both federal and Texas dmv #’s. This hurts us because they are not paying all the stuff we have to pay. So this means they can haul the load cheaper then me. Also here in Texas we are having a bunch of people who don’t have the right to work in the states driving semi’s. I know that dot did a blitz on one rock pit the other day and towed off 71 trucks. This is a start but we have a long way to go. Sorry I just needed to vent. Have a blessed day everyone

Keep in mind that the new contracting law starts March 11th. I do anticipate more new carrier authorities rising due to the transition. I also see a rise in the need for independent dispatchers due to the new law. If the tender rejection rates increase while the carrier population steadily increases, this would be a sign of the new law settling in. The 1st set of carriers that will be sued are all the carriers from IL for sure.

Transitioning away from the fracking industry presents a formidable challenge, particularly in the context of current economic conditions. The persistent concern over fuel efficiency, as exemplified by my DD15's yield of 5.5 miles per gallon, exacerbates this situation. My longing for the open road and the broader opportunities it offers is palpable, yet the general freight market does not seem to offer a reprieve. This juxtaposition of desire and practical constraints creates a poignant dilemma, where the yearning to pivot to a more fulfilling path is met with the harsh realities of financial viability. In essence, it's a journey fraught with complexities, mirroring the intricate and often unforgiving landscape of modern transportation and industry.

Good morning. Ive always wondered: when u give the average rates/mile, you always mention that this average includes short haul rates which drive up the result... this led me to believe that you're referring to the mean - the total rates/mile divided by the number of rates; although, I don't think that's what carriers are after when they think in terms of average rate/mile because the number of miles for which the rate is high is so few. So the question is, is there a way to calculate total dollars per total loaded miles, let's say per day, and find the middle number? Would that result even be what carriers are looking for when they ask about the average rate per mile? Thanks

With the fuel cost, Cargo insurance, Physical Insurance, NTI (Bob tail), maintenance, Factoring percentage, UCR, Tolls, taxes (Well, repairs can be paid by credit if one has available credit), ETC... I'm scratching my head bald how Carriers are booking cheap paying loads. I have plenty insight to this problem which I won't comment. The regulations in this business is a bulldozer money maker for some while we sweat and work our selves too hard to make a decent living. Trying to have patience for this industry to correct is horrendously difficult.

Seems to me that the authority spike is perhaps people trying to pocket a little more of what they run by going it on their own. If you have never done it before you have no idea how complex it can be. Also new carriers will not affect capacity as much as one would think for the simple reason brokers will be very reluctant to use new carriers in this market. Just my thoughts.
