Artista di straordinaria intelligenza. Qualunque cosa canti dà sempre l'impressione di averne compreso profondamente il senso. Un po' l'esatto opposto di Del Monaco, tanto per dire. Certo, chi è abituato ad altri interpreti di lieder, può avere l'impressione che a volte ci siano un po' troppi decibel, ma anche per questo il Winterreise di Vickers è da ascoltare.
Two silly comments below ascribing non-existent faults to a great singer. Vickersis absolutely sincere in his expression as well as being a great technician - and some people are unable to distinguish portamento from scooping. This is a great account but the constant audience coughing is the only thing intolerable about it; go for the the "In memoriam" studio recording on Warner made three months earlier than this concert performance. It is slightly quicker and obviously free of distractions - but artistically supreme, as is this performance.
What a paradoxical singer Jon Vickers was! Within the same song, he oscillates between ravishingly subtle phrasing and the most outrageous exaggeration. The latter prevails, I am sorry to say.

I'm a big fan of Vickers in opera but I'm not greatly moved by this lieder. Hans Hotter was a Wagnerian singer who was a really fine lieder singer

His volume-control is great, especially his sensitive, intimate pianissimo passages, almost whispered. BUT, his scooping and sliding is intolerable.
