11:20 I definitely have felt that relief going back to the states and not having to think about speaking before I speak. Feels so much easier to just speak English.
I love the CR climate. Especially in Hermosa/Jaco. That's one of the reasons I bought there. SoCal, for me, gets so cold and when the Santa Ana winds blow the humidity drops to the low percentages and I feel like I am choking. I might have been born here, but my body says no! Pura Vida!!!!!!
Fantastic video. We’re still looking forward to moving but still waiting for the house to sell. You mentioned Harrisonburg and I don’t think anything will prepare you for the changes that has taken place. JMU has quadrupled in size from when I attended. You’re going to be surprised. Great video and great points. I do appreciate here that no one cares how you dress when out for errands 😎. My “go to town” cloths are the same as my hang around the house cloths?👍. I really appreciate here how people look free each other. ,Stores, banks etc look fate the elderly. The respect is so nice to see. Thanks for sharing. Have fun at the retreat next week.
Everything is SO expensive! It's COLD most of the time, and dry. Bring ChapStick and skin lotion. It's so impersonal, like you said, no greetings and smiles everywhere you go. And there is so much STUFF! There are so many stores full of things to buy. Who buys all that stuff?? It's all manicured and beautiful, roads are well marked and well maintained. But everyone is driving fast and in a hurry. I'm just over the border in Panama but it's so similar to what you said. I'm much happier here.
Great video Sarah! I've been down here a little over 4 years now and regarding your list, the topic that hit me the hardest and was unexpected was "Friends". When you relocate out of the country, you really learn who your true friends are. It was a bit heartbreaking at first, but it turns out you're better off in the long run.
My boyfriend and I visited Costa Rica for the first time and we both fell in love with CR and somehow he has talked me into relocating next year. I work for a U.S. company where I work 100% remote as an accountant for a private company. I figured I could apply for a nomad visa and go from there to take Costa Rica for a test drive so-to-speak. I have lived in my city for years and I’m already thinking how much different it’s gonna be shopping there versus here at home in Colorado. I’m used to shopping at my trifecta of stores, Safeway, Costco, and Target. I know the stores there are nothing like they are here and going grocery shopping was very different there. I would like to give it a try before I say CR is not for me.
Omg! Yes, about the change in climate. We went back to Louisiana for the first time since we moved here in January. Super dry in La this time of year. The immediate change in climate messed with my sinuses.
Hello Sarah, been a fsn for a few years. Have to agree with the irritation of the throat in well for me was home in Canada(Saskatchewan Province) my throat was raspy the entire time I thought it was a cold..now i know, Thanks..Also when i was growing up it was always customary to kiss a cheek or 2 while hugging family or close friends(as a boy that was "ick"..lol but now i rarely see it. Living CR Pura Vida 5 months now.. thanks.
Fortunately or unfortunately, Being upper 50s those days of reminicing never go away as we age. Its a vood thing, sometimes its sad as we all want to be young and carefree, but that subsides after you reflect that if you are happy now, there is a good reason, amd its nit because you want to be young, its because you learned from experience..
You didn’t mention food, especially fruits that you can easily get here (CR) and not there in the US. Would you say that’s also a cultural shock? And no rice/beans 😜.
FYI in case you don't know this. Don't actually put your lips in the other person's cheek, that's not ok. 😂 it's more like cheek to cheek and then kiss the air. 😅

That was a great video! We just put the house up for sale and hope to be down there soon! We’ve been to CR 4 times and are ready for our next chapter!

I lived in Jaco fo rthree months and never wore shoes nor socks the entire time. It was too hot!
