  • The Lord's Prayer
    King James Version
    Matthew 6:9-13
"Our Father, which art in heaven,
    Hallowed be thy Name.
    Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
    As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
    And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
    But deliver us from evil.
    For thine is the kingdom,
    The power, and the glory,
    For ever and ever.
    Amen."
"and lead us not into temptation"
James 1:13-15 (KJV): "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."
(ESV) - "Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."
In my opinion, this means that this part of the prayer is not telling or asking God not to tempt us, instead, I believe this part of the prayer is a statement about temptation and sin, being something we should not/do not want.
    "But deliver us from evil"
1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV): "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."
(ESV): "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."
We know that sin, the devil, and our sin nature are all evil, but God will always provide a way of escape. If this prayer is to teach us, people who are believers, and already saved, then "But deliver us from evil" isn't talking about salvation, it is talking about the temptation and sin that was just mentioned. That is why I chose to use signs that mirror the concept in 1 Corinthians 10:13 of God giving us an escape from temptation and sin.
With scriptures, music, books, etc that have a lot of cultural and linguistic information, as well as multiple meanings, embedded in the text, there are almost never 100% accurate translations that keep 100% of the intended message, intent, cultural values, etc. You may disagree with some of my sign choices or phrasing - you may even disagree completely - my only hope is that this encourages you to study, and provides you with a good resource for studying The Lord's Prayer. :)

Thank you so much for posting this! I was trying to sign this to a song during a concert at my church and totally blew it (in ASL) and had to transliterate it. I love your translation and would love to incorporate that into mine if that's okay. God bless.

I enjoyed this a lot. And conceptually, I agree with your "give us this day our daily bread." But for some reason, I feel compelled to put the sign for "bread" into it. I'm not sure why. The same for the sign for "kingdom". Other parts match your interpretation. But I do appreciate your version. It was very pleasant to watch.
