Diluting Acrylics vs Water-Mixable Oils

- Over the past few months, I've been experimenting with various mediums, recording drying times and noting the handling of water-mixable oils, in the process of creating a new course.
Amongst the copious footage, I wanted to share an introductory lesson where I compare the dilution of acrylics to water-mixable oils.
Simple but fundamental observations.
You may find there are times when acrylics dry off too quickly or are difficult to blend especially when you're painting in thin layers. Using water-mixable oil's can be fantastic because they give you that extra working time. Painting wet-into-wet is one of the significant advantages you’ll notice because you gain a lot more time for smoking together colours.
So in this video, I paint a graduated sky, blending really thin applications looking at the differences between diluting with water and then a medium.

You’re back! It’s so good to see you again Mr. Kemp. Please don’t go away again! :)
That's very kind of you to say so Burak, so pleased you enjoyed the video.
Will
Thank you for forgoing high speed video and loud music. Both are equally obnoxious.
Pleased you enjoyed the pace.
Will
I`m gonna give it a thumbs up before I even watch it!
That's very kind Jana
This makes me want to try and paint with water mixable oils!!!
Me too😂
You are one of the best virtual educators in RUclips: I am also happy to see you are back. I learned from you a lot and I use GOLDEN acrylics and ARTISAN WN as well as LUKAS Berlin WMO: I like the ARTISAN better, more buttery. Both brands work great for me. I use water for the first washes. I only use ARTISAN's linseed oil if need to at the very end, but basically I don't find the need to add anything as I paint, just the WMO. ECO friendly too!
Glad you've been enjoying the Artisan paints
Will
Thank you so much ! I am so happy you are back.
In the past, I bought lessons on your site and they are very well done, especially the white flowers/still life. I learnt so so much. Thanks again. Friendly from France.
So pleased you enjoyed the Floral course Cathy, thanks for your kind words.
Cheers,
Will
Thank you, Will! Wonderful! ☺
Glad you enjoyed it Penny
You are re calm personality and that's inspired me
This was really helpful, especially working in the Australian heat!!
As ever your tutorials are very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your time and experience.
You are welcome Margaret, hope you find it helpful

Thanks for posting this! Oh thing though, could you explain why you add the drops of airbrush medium?
The airbrush medium can help when diluting acrylics in thin layers to retain a paint film integrity. You're usually ok just using water when there is an absorbent ground like a canvas, but on some canvas boards I find they are more resistant to water so the airbrush medium can help.
Thanks for sharing! Great comparison video. Would matte gel medium work as well as airbrush medium for mixing with the gesso as an underpaint?
Thanks Sharon, you could try a matte medium, it just has a little thicker consistency so might need a touch more water.

Hi Will thank you for this demo, I really appreciate it. My issue with acrylics is that they dry too fast on my PALLETTE, and I've tried many. Do you find the water mixable oils stay wet/juicy/malleable on the pallette longer than the acrylics? Thank you for your reply.
Hi Lolita, yes water-mixable oils will stay wet much longer, in a mass on your palette they will easily stay wet for a few days.
Will
Thanks for sharing your technique. Great job.
Golden Glazing Liquid will not only protect the acrylic film but it also increases the working time of acrylic paints. If you want even more working time while protecting the film, Golden Open Medium (or their Open paints) gives quite a bit more working time.
Again Will, another well done video comparison which clearly answers the very questions I had with WMO rather than acrylic. Many thanks!
So pleased it helped Roni

Seems like a lot of work and cost for all the mediums. A watercolor wash would eliminate all that :-) (says the watercolorist ;-)
Nice
Thanks
Oooooo I’ve been wondering if I should try golden open acrylic or winsor Newton water mixable oils for the blending
I use ARTISAN WN as well as LUKAS Berlin WMO: I like the ARTISAN better, more buttery. Both brands work great for me. I use water for the first washes. I only use ARTISAN's linseed oil if need to at the very end, but basically I don't find the need to add anything as I paint, just the WMO. ECO friendly too! TRY the one you get for sale!
Loved it🦋is the glazing medium similar to the gac100 from Golden? Thank you
Hey Camila, yes, it is, very close, just a little more viscosity.
Cheers,
Will
Great to see you back. Great as always. 👍
Cheers Ulf, much appreciated

I just realized I am mesmerized by watching paint dry, lol. Covid has a lot to answer for! 🤪
What does the airbrush medium do?
The airbrush medium can help when diluting acrylics in thin layers to retain a paint film integrity. You're usually ok just using water when there is an absorbent ground like a canvas, but on some canvas boards I find they are more resistant to water so the airbrush medium can help.

Interesting! What is the water mixable oil thinner made of? I mean, can you using it for thinning the underpainting, or is it an oily medium for top layers?
Hey Rebeka, yes, you can use the WMO thinner like an equivalent to a mineral spirit in traditional oil painting. Great for the underpainting stages.
@@willkempartschool Amazing, I'll put some on my shopping list :) Thanks so much for the reply!
I've been waiting for news on the water mixable course. Glad it will be available soon. Will you be reviewing the various WMO on the market and giving any kind of recommendations? Which WMO will you be using. I noticed the Duo and the Cobra on your palette for this Demo. Thanks so much. Love your instruction!
Hi Lucy, I don't have a review between brands on the course, but I use Cobra and Duo Aqua WMO throughout the lessons, mainly Cobra.

Great and informative video.
I'm acrylic user myself. To be honest for me there is nothing like good oil paints but small apartment and small child led me into acrylics.
I do like speed they provide sometimes though, and some quick and great effects you can achieve in your underpainting but sometimes its frustrating how fast they dry. You can't have it all I guess :D
Never tried water based oils, but as much as i heard they still oil paints and using water with them will damage the paint film. thinners should be used and only difference between them and regular oils is that you can clean your brushes with water. I really never used them so not sure if this is true, some info would be nice.
Btw lately I made bit of a step as an artist and from landscapes did few portrait exercises. My wife asked me what i want for birthday and I should get your portrait course 😀
Pleased you've been making progress with your paintings Ante

Glad to see you back Will. What's the purpose of mixing airbrush medium in with your gesso? Can other mediums be used, like gloss or matte medium, if you don't have airbrush medium?
It's a mix between adhesion to canvas boards and retaining paint film integrity when diluting acrylics. Some canvas boards can resist and repel water more easily. If you're using canvas you'll be absolutely fine diluting just with water.
Hello Will! I had read in a comment on your website that there once was a video on seascape that could be purchased - but when I look for it, the page is not found - is that still available ? Thanks so much for all your instruction - just terrific!
Hi Karen, yes, there used to be a seascape course but it's not longer available.
Will
Will, you are a very good teacher. Your patience with the paint makes me jealous. I am always in a hurry. Probably comes with being in the US. Thanks for another great lesson.
Much appreciated Michael
You have been missed :) Thank you for offering us both the free instructional, and the pay for access, videos ! I have much to learn from you.
Glad to help Donna, really pleased you've been enjoying them.

Was worried about you.....Welcome back.
Thanks Satyaki.
Will
Thanks, Will. Love your advice and video demos. I appreciate your generousity.
My pleasure Lolita.
Will
Such a great lesson!! Just bought two of your lessons and can’t wait to start!! thank you Will Kemp!! 👍
Awesome, thanks so much Duane, really hope you enjoy the courses!
Will
Why do you dilute with airbrush medium?
It can help retain the paint film integrity when working in thin layers.
Will
A technical question if I may? Were you combining Artisan thinner with Cobra WM oils? I really like the Cobra range and it would be great to be able to use mediums/thinners from Artisan . Thanks for the great video too.
Hi Ashley, yes, using Artisan thinner with Cobra WMOs
Will
@@willkempartschool Thankyou!
Hey look who’s back!!!! welcome back will :D
Just what I was looking for. It seems the the option with thinner gives the best results. What do you think about doing portion of the painting in water soluble oils and the rest in acrylics? There is a problem with different type of varnishing, the acrylics would have to have some kind of isolation coat? Have you ever tried that?
You can work with acrylics under the oils but not acrylics on-top. If you underpaint with acrylics you can varnish the painting as if an oil painting
willkempartschool Thanks! This makes things less complicated 🤔😀
I love your videos and they’ve helped me improve by leaps and bounds. Thank you!!
You are so welcome! Glad they have been helpful.
Will
Finally see you back! Love your painting classes!
Glad you like them Louise!

thank you will. your lessons are the best!
Glad you like them Bee!
Will, have you tried the fast drying oils and if so what did you think to them?
Hi Lynn, yes I have, they can work great.
