      @Robert Shaffer i think its cause of 2 reasons: 1, only one company makes the SCAR, whilst there are many that make an AR. and 2, lots of R&D went into the process of the rifle. It literally is Special Operations Combat Assault Rifle, so. Not even common for military to have it.

    I think you need to measure how long a bullet takes to melt when submerged in molten aluminum, then use that data to estimate how much aluminum a bullet would have to travel through to be melted by it.
    Wouldn't be accurate exactly because its not accounting for the initial temp of the bullet, nor the extra conduction of the bullet traveling through the aluminum, but it would get you an upper limit.

    • @gundorstoneskin5900
      @gundorstoneskin5900 5 лет назад +10

      The bullet would stop after about 18 inches of aluminum, like in water.

    • @chainmaillekid
      @chainmaillekid 5 лет назад +12

      Good point, but its probably not the same distance as in water. IDK if its the waters density or surface tension or what that contributes to the number, but its very likely to different with aluminum, I'd guess shorter.

    • @themeez1000
      @themeez1000 5 лет назад +7

      Also both the bullets they were using are copper jacketed. Which has a higher melt temp that aluminum.

    • @David-if2hj
      @David-if2hj 5 лет назад +12

      They should also test it against a solid block of aluminum the same thickness as the container of molten aluminum

    • @MattsAwesomeStuff
      @MattsAwesomeStuff 5 лет назад +18

      Think about putting an ice cube into a drink, or even a pot of boiling water. The water is much hotter than the ice. Does it instantly disappear? No, there is a limited rate of heat exchange. It takes at least several seconds. A bullet is passing through in 1/1000th of seconds. This is made worse by the fact that the bullet will have a pillow of compressed air in front of it that insulates it from the metal. I wouldn't be surprised if the bullet never even touches the aluminum by the time it exits the can, just from the air cushion around it. Bit of a silly hypothesis by BYS, putting a bullet on steel wire and dunking it would demonsrate it's going to take several seconds to melt even if it's lead (let alone copper).

    It makes sense- the amount of time the bullet is in contact with the molten metal is tiny, so the amount of heat transferred should be pretty small too. Personally I was more curious if the density of the molten aluminium would do it. I know it's a fairly light metal, but it's still twice the density of water, so I'd expect it would help.
    I liked how much it splashed though, and the smoke rising up from the grass looked really cool!

That being said, I would love to see what was left of them after exiting.

    This was a really interesting video, I have some theory’s that I think you could possibly try in the future 1. The 223 is a rather thin bullet and is going really fast and I think to fast for the aluminum to even come in contact with maybe get a round that is slower so less powder behind it and the bullet itself having more surface area, maybe like a 500 magnum idk cuz that’s still going super fast but you could always just drop a bullet into the bucket of aluminum 😂

    With heat, it all matters about amount of time enduring the temperature of the molten aluminium. Shooting the bullet, especially through a rifle because of the increased velocity, does not allow for the time it takes to melt the bullet. Time is the key. A long enough container of molten aluminium would stop it.

    In theory the aluminum would melt the lead, but at the thicknesses of molten aluminum you had, and with the speed of a bullet, enough thermal energy can’t be transferred to the bullet to melt it (or the lead was at least still dense enough in molten form that it remained together in the molten aluminum) and was able to punch through the container and ballistics gel

    Even if lead has a low melting point you can't really heat it to that temperature in a fraction of a second by putting it in molten aluminum. The bullet is pretty much solid the whole time and i would guess that the metal container for the aluminum actually provided more of a protection than the aluminum.
