Vegetables that can survive light frosts - Beets, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, celery, collards, green onions, potatoes, Bibb and leaf lettuce, mustard, parsnips, radishes, spinach, and Swiss chard. Some of these vegetables, like collards and parsnips, can even taste better after being exposed to below-freezing temperatures.
Hardier vegetables - Cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, kale, leeks, rutabagas, and turnips can survive temperatures as low as 20˚F.
I will also be planting all of my perennials in the coming weeks!
I personally like to plant Marigolds and Nasturtiums as companion plants with my garden as they do a wonderful job of repelling pests. Herbs are your best companion plants though, in my opinion. Basil repels moths and larvae in the garden. Dill attracts ladybugs. Mint deters aphids and beetles. Tansy can draw in pest eating bugs such as ladybugs and wasps. Best of luck this fall!
