But to aid in detangling I use a conditioning liquid or moisturizer that I apply first. I must say that the way you detangle your hair works!😃 Thanks for sharing!

My hair has been twisted for a week following your method but as i have fine 4a & 4c i don't want to have my hands in my head too much other than to moisturise and seal. This was very interesting, thanks for uploading! I've noticed my hair thrives with just using oils too! I have not tried aloe or flax oil though. I feel like olive oil causes a bit of hardness/breakage for me. But castor oil works super super well for softening and detangling my hair without breakage! I love it! Sometimes I dilute it with a thinner oil I have on hand like apricot or sunflower. I also like a penetrating oil like coconut oil for pre-shampoo conditioning and detangling. Coconut oil is a bomb detangler for me as well, but more penetrating/reinforcing than super duper softenening- that's why I use it prior to shampoo. I have very dense hair ranging from medium to coarse "doll hair" by the way. I don't think my hair loves aloe vera juice too much, but I may revisit to confirm this. My hair does love to be sprayed with kinky curly knot today mixed with distilled water post shampoo; it's very moisturizing and slippery for me. The only time I attempt to detangle my damp hair is with the knot today in. I know that overall my hair most prefers to be finger detangled with oil when it's dry/moisturized/stretched rather than damp or wet. It also likes to be oiled when dry but moisturized. My hair seems to absorb the oil better, stay detangled and stretched, and look and feel more hydrated when I apply it to dry hair. It tends to feel less hydrated/borderline crunchy when applied to damp/wet hair after it dries which can seem counterintuitive. I can get away with using castor oil on damp hair through. My hair is weird, lol.

      Indigenous Strandz I've had a ton of trial, error, and tribulation with this hair. Plus I've done a lot of research and natural hair guru watching- that's how I discovered what my hair loves and hates. I've been on this natural hair journey since 2003 when I was a teenager, lol. I have big chopped 3 times since then and done 1 mini chop, lol. I basically lived in puffs, box braids and a flat iron until about 2012 when I did my last big chop and finally started practicing (somewhat) healthy hair habits. By 2014 I was at BSL, but my ends were horrible since I refused to trim for two years, lol leading to a major mini chop in 2015. With protective styling and slightly better trimming, I finally made it to waist length this past fall, but cut it to BSL last month for evenness and hair health. I'm really serious about healthy hair now in 2019. My next goal is tailbone length, then thigh length like yours. I have been experimenting a lot in the past few weeks researching/trying detangling methods and trying different products. I feel like I have learned more about my hair in the last month than the last decade and a half I've been natural! So far castor oil and coconut oil are my favorite oils, as well as lemongrass essential oil. Thanks to you, I discovered my love for castor oil as a leave-in conditioning oil. I can tell by the way my hair retains moisture and flexibility with it that I will enjoy A LOT of healthy length retention. My favorite shampoo is suave daily clarifying, or any other ph balanced clarifying shampoo. Favorite conditioners are suave essentials apple or clarifying conditioner (beefed up with castor oil), aphogee 2 minute reconstructor, and various hair masks that contain a small amount of hydrolyzed proteins, especially hydrolyzed silk. My favorite leave-in is kinky curly knot today; I can dilute it with water and it gives me incredible shine, hold, moisture and slip without flaking or residue. Favorite detangling method is finger detangle pre shampoo with coconut oil on dry hair, even though I do use a seamless comb in addition to finger-detangling on wash day. This helps ensure more complete detangling for setting my hair in braids to stretch for my heat-less blow-out. Once my braids are dry, I take them down, apply my oil lightly and comb out each braid. Then I style it however I want till next wash day- usually loose twists- and they stay shiny, neat, tangle-free and moisturized the entire time. I do not wet my hair at all until next wash day.

    Okay, if it wasn’t for you I would not have known about aloe vera oil until you mentioned it, or maybe a lot later in my natural hair journey, now after saying that, it’s your fault I just purchased the aloe vera oil. I love the plant, but I haven’t used the juice for my hair...yet and I have plenty of the juice in my fridge. I have noticed the castor oil is way too heavy for our hair for the whole length, so I’ll use it only to seal my ends with aloe vera gel. I’ve also figured out a while back that our (my families hair) LOVES olive oil for some reason, but I don’t use that very much either. I’m starting a new way of doing our hair, which is weird because I feel like I’ve been doing both my teens hair like yours for years and they both have waist length hair, my hair is past my shoulders but doesn’t seem to get much length after that. My focus will have to be split into two parts , the first being my scalp and the second being my length (hair). Hopefully this will work out much better for me.
    I’m still a bit confused on how you keep your scalp cleansed, so I’ll go back over that video a few more times.
    Thank you for everything!🙏🏾

    I was hoping coconut oil woulda been one of your choices. I've been hearing so much hype about it, but I've never got the hype since I've tried it once or twice. But two RUclipsrs in particular, have mentioned how when they've used the oil in different scenarios(hot oil treatment, leavein hair oil), they never really cared for it much, it didn't do anything for them. Which that has been the same case for me. But when they started using it as a prepoo/detangler on their dry hair before washing their hair, it was apparently a game changer for them. Now I'm thinking of revisiting the oil since I haven't used it as a prepoo. + they're both hipos, and so am I sooo... But first lemme get rid of some of the hair products that I have in my stash before I go out and buy the entire oil market😅

    • @simpleeye7950
      @simpleeye7950 5 лет назад +1

      Girl yes! For me and many others the dry detangling/pre-shampoo treatment with coconut oil has been the truth! Shed hairs slide right out, little to no breakage, hair does not become super heavy or water-logged on wash day (prevents hygral fatigue) better moisture retention overall. I've noticed when I concentrate castor oil on my dry roots pre-shampoo, they become super stretched, soft, and manageable and even easier to finger detangle. For me, dry finger detangling has been the way to go, especially since I keep my hair stretched. And since my hair is kept stretched in loose twists, and I don't wet it down with any moisturizers until wash day, detangling for me is mostly about shed hair removal rather than actual tangles.

    • @wapaa26
      @wapaa26 5 лет назад

      Simple Eye I love that castor oil on roots pre-shampoo suggestion. Never thought of that. You have just possibly solved another problem that I have with my hair. I’ve noticed that when I tried “detangling” my hair in the shower (with tons of conditioner as a matter of fact), that I’ve never truly gotten to the roots. I’d stop somewhere within an inch of my scalp and say I’m done. One day I realized that I was doing that, and when I questioned myself why, my answer was, *It was the forbidden place* , 😅🤣. I was so afraid of that area of my head, it was comparable to the Amazon forest to me, with all of its vines and roots intertwined. I just could not touch it without my fingers getting lost. (Define hair density and you’d see a picture of my hair) So I’d just forfeit. I mean I got 95%-97% of my hair detangled, so it was win win to me. I knew the answer was to keep it stretched. But *how* was another question(especially on wash day). So I’ve watched a video about the Cherry Lola treatment(I’m excluding the baking soda since I have hi-po hair)and doing that. But I like this idea about castor oil on the roots to keep it stretched on wash day.
      P.S. I’m so sorry for the long dissertation😭

      @@IndigenousStrandz11 Thank you for your sacrifice. Sorry though for asking😢 Much 💜 to ya❣
      I don't know if I should suggest you doing it without your aloe juice and just trying is straight on, or trying it both your way and with the coconut by itself. I don't know if that'd make a difference. Coconut oil confuses me given the fact that I hear since it helps a lot with people who have hi-po hair, I thought it'd be perfect for me. But the first time I used it I remembered feeling like it just sat on top of my hair as if it didn't want to go in. And coconut oil is supposed to be the most penetrating oil out there from what most people say.

    Hey! So I have a regime close to this, I took a lot of tips from watching your videos, but how do you keep your hair from getting super oily and getting your head scarves oily? How long do you leave your hair to soak everything up? Because I find my hair gets if I don’t leave it to set for a few hours.

    • @IndigenousStrandz11
      @IndigenousStrandz11  5 лет назад +6

      My hair is high porosity so it tends to soak it up fast but it stays moisturized. On the other hand since I damp my hair then put the oils on it it stays damp for maybe a day I want to put my scarf on my scarf gets damp and oily but I put on a cotton scarf over my satin scarf and it absorbs the oil but I like to put on my side scarf over my damp hair because the heat really penetrates my strands and kind of acts as a treatment at the same time but I do have to wash my scars a lot and wash my pillow cases especially the first two days of me doing my hair when the oil is freshly there

      Indigenous Strandz So you have high porosity hair. I have low porosity (type 4a-4c) hair. This explains some differences in our regimens. Your hair loves aloe juice, and acv, but mine does not. Your hair likes to be oiled when damp, mine likes it on dry. It's probably also why I like shampoo because of the tendency for me to get build-up more easily. I get most all my moisture (with the right products containing humectants and usually hydrolyzed protein) while in the shower and once my hair dries it generally retains that moisture easily.

    Im new to your channel! If you dont mind me asking, how old were you when you reached thigh length? Or even waist/tailbone length? I been natural going on 10 years in May, and hair just reached maybe 2-3 inches above belly button length or like 4 inches from tail bone length. I just turned 31 and seems like my hair has stopped growing...especially around 26-28yrs or so. It also seems thinner than what I remember & wondering if I should trim it...but the minute I spritz it and let it air dry and puff out it's pretty thick LOL. I moisturize often and wear my hair back, loosely, very low manipulation (usually covered with a satin scarf and a beanie or a low bun. I'm wondering if im missing nutrients or something. 10 years of babying my hair, I feel like my hair should be at the back of my knees >_< lol. Also wondering if I should straighten it and see if my hair needs to be evened out maybe, cuz I hate cutting & trimming my hair but when I inspect I never have split ends & if i do I "search & destroy."
    Also searching for any tips or a hair care regimen. Hope you have some videos! Your hair is gorgeous & love your down to Earth vibes :).

      Hey love! I was 30 when it started to go past my butt then 31 when it really started to reach then 32 i was like ummmmm its going mid thigh and now its not that far from my knees... Im not sure how much longer it will grow because i have no one in my family to reference to lol. Whats ur diet like? Do u feel like your hair is breaking or dry? I usually say cutting is last resort but if i need to trim your hair in order to get rid of really bad damage then go for it but u dont have to trim it all at once. You may also need to loom deeper in your regimen

      Sorry i had to read your message again... U said it seems thinner do u have hair like any of your parents? You should speak to your mother if possible... To see what her hair was like at 30... @@IndigenousStrandz11 Thank you for responding!! Glad to hear your age! I was worried hair stopped growing in your 30s or something lol. You look younger though :)!
      I am cleaning up my diet now, transitioning to fully plant based from a typical American, processed diet and started taking a multivitamin & msm about a 2months ago, cuz I notice I cant really grow my nails either & my eyebrows were ALWAYS thin (thick in width but sparse hair) but doctos wont really tell me much with ny blood work other than I was "slightly anemic." So I added seaweed and beet juice to my diet & castor oil for eyebrows & lashes and they are much thicker now but hair doesnt seem to be doing much and stuck around the same length, but my edge line has hair growing in that was never there before, just seems like the length isn't moving...unless I maxed my hair growth but that seems impossible 😭. It's stuck at like 18-20 inches...I see short hairs every now and then, but not often...maybe once a week or 2....but usually always shed hairs.
      My mom has been permed since her teens to now (63yrs) so I dont have a reference really...but grandma & great grandmas on both side had really long hair! My hair doesnt feel dry when clumped...until I start separating it and the frizz comes in & tangles/matts like CRAZY if I'm not careful or my hair isn't drenched, which is why I always kept it back. I thought the tangling might habe been causing breaks. But when it's in twists its really soft. I cut about 1 inch before to see if it would help thinking it was split ends and it didnt >_

    • @simpleeye7950
      @simpleeye7950 5 лет назад +2

      I think I might chime in and say I've noticed that my hair growth kind of correlates with stress levels/quality sleep. Also good nutrition, exercise, and scalp massages help. If you haven't already, you can visit your doctor and have blood work done, and make sure you have everything looked at, thryroid, ferritin, iron, vitamins, etc. I am experimenting now with water-only hair rinsing and aloe vera water spritzing my scalp and hair. Supposedly keeping the scalp clean and ph-balanced is excellent for growth. I was iffy at using aloe on my hair again because I didn't think it liked it in the past, but upon revisiting I have found that my hair and scalp are fine with aloe that is diluted with water. Aloe also helps keep my curls clumped, elongated, super-detangled, and shiny. I have not used products on my hair in 5 days, only castor oil on my very ends for extra protection (like 2-3 days ago) and the aloe water all over my hair. Hair feels nice and the first two inches or so of my roots are extra soft from my natural oil production. Since reintroducing aloe my hair texture appears to be a tighter version of Naptural85's which is kind of interesting. Wash day was also different though, as I tried new products. I tried a natural silicone free conditioner that contained keratin protein, as well as a shampoo recommended to me by my sister in law - the mane choice detangling shampoo. This shampoo is super natural and gentle, sulphate free which may have contributed to the super manageability of my hair. Anyway I washed my hair in twists that I had detangled prior to washing it and I literally did not have to detangle my hair at all post wash retwist except for like one or two twists! It was amazing. My hair stayed detangled and got super duper clumped/enlongated and defined through the wash process! I've never had an easier wash day. I will continue with massaging/preening, water rinsing, and using aloe water and see how my hair does. I have yet to re-rinse my hair since wash day, but I'm going to get a shower filter and see how that goes. I wonder how my hair will be and if it will effect growth.

      @@simpleeye7950 Thank you! That was super detailed so I appreciate you taking the time to write that! It's hard getting doctors here to do any bloodwork outside regular labs. I live in kind of a small old timer town and they seem to get offended as if you're telling them how to do their job or talk down to you. But I have been struggling with a tachycardia issue that landed me in the hospital 4x in the past 5 years with heart attack like symptoms, & they keep chiming it up as anxiety although I'm never anxious before it happens. But I think it has to do with my iron levels or some sort of deficiency because it's really gotten better since incorporating a multivitamin & beet juice. I guess I have to give it time to see if my hair moves 😭. I only used it for about 3 months so far but that should be enough for at least 1-3 inches of growth if retaining length properly (although I rarely see broken hairs unless I'm styling daily which is almost never in the past few years). But that's why I twisted my hair to decrease tangles & manipulation while moisturizing in case my hair is breaking farther up than I realize and making it seem thinner? It made sense in my head lol. It's funny u brought up aloe though!! I was thinking about trying it again because I used it the first 2years I went natural & my hair grew like wildfire & I was thinking of mimicking everything I did around this time. I stopped for some reason (experimenting with products probably lol I want to say thats when shea moisture came out 🤣... then about 5-6 years into my journey seemed like my hair hated aloe & never went back to it. Thought it had to do with the quality cuz I get aloe my juice from vitacost because fresh isnt available here unless I try to grow it (what kind do you use??? Fresh aloe from the plant or out the bottle? The kind I have is for internal use & has to be refrigerated so I figured it was ok to use but noticed there was a few preservatives & stopped cuz thought thats what my hair hated...it felt brittle but stronger & shiny...like when u use too much protein but didn't style right) but never thought about diluting it though! That's smart! I use all natural products and only do diluted acv rinses on wash day (1:3 ratio & shampoo as needed usually every other wash with african black soap to remove old sebum) since I never have product/chemical buildup since I dont use store products. That's why i was so stumped 😭. Def giving the aloe a try again!

      Do u manipulate your hair alot in my front? Hair around your head grows at different rates. Munes grow faster in my back and sides... To make it fuller u may need to find a low manipulation style for a while and find a regimen that provides you with max moisture retention and cause less breakage to start seeing fullness restored

    • @simpleeye7950
      @simpleeye7950 5 лет назад +1

      After watching greenbeauty's water washing and sebum series, I've gotten a better scientific understanding of why this very simple/natural conditioner and shampoo free regimen works so well for her. Natural oils compliment our sebum, which is the best hair product. Aloe helps to keep the hair in its natural acidic state where it is strongest and able to retain moisture easier. Vinegar helps to break up oils and help them move down the shaft easier, but it doesn't remove and strip oils like shampoo does. Vinegar can actually work pretty well for a while if you only use oils like she does, but over extended time, or if you're also using butters, you can run into build up and need a cleanser, although not super often. I think one can still create all natural cleanser without using shampoo with like black soap or Castile soap and other ph-balancing ingredients like aloe or vinegar and maybe water and glycerin. You could control the strength/harshness of the homemade shampoo by adding a bit of oil to the formula and not too much soap. Pre pooing with coconut oil could help too.
