I got my Onkyo TX-RZ50 2.5 years ago and it supported all of this out of the box sans VRR. That came about a year ago. It gets over Net firmware updates regularly. It cost $1300. Granted it’s only a 9.2.

Yeah, I have the v6a amplifier and no vrr support. I spoke to the support and they said that they still don’t know when the vrr update will be out. For now I solved the issue by connecting the Ps5 straight to the tv and use EARC. Not ideal but at least I get vrr support

I do everything by remote control because I don’t like to get dirt or fingerprints or scratches I’ve had it my den onover 10 years now it looks like it just came out of the box

I agree, lessons learned that all equipment should be evaluated what it can do today and not on the promise of what firmware will bring tomorrow. I have the TSR-700 (the Costco equivalent to RX-V6A) that I bought on sale for $330. The AVR does download the firmware, but Yamaha definitely has been slow with the updates and fixes. However, given the low price and that I'm not impacted personally (I don't have an 8K TV or a TV capable of 4K 120Hz) I'm in a much better place with this AVR. But you have to ask...what the heck is going wrong over at Yamaha?

    • @TechnoDad

Thank you for sharing your experience, Bryan! I too had the RX-V6A which I ended up sending to a good friend that wanted something without breaking the bank. He also doesn't need HDMI 2.1 features, so it's all good for him. And yes...WTF is going on in deed.

I'm planning on getting this receiver, I wanted a receiver that has 11channels out of the box, at least three 8K inputs and 3 outputs, composites and this receiver seems to have everything. I was leaning towards Onkyo RZ50 but it had 9 channels and two HDMI outs, zone 2 being 4K 60Hz, then went to Denon X4800H, its yet to come, it will have 9 channels and three HDMI outs, but zone 2 is still 4K 60Hz. But this seems to have everything I want. and the future upgrades are kind of fixed.

Just bought a RX-A4A. Not a gamer, so this feature isn't a concern. However, I updated the firmware over our LAN line with no issues, now showing Version 1.66. I don't think this included VRR support, but they are supposedly working on it. If you MUST have certain features immediately, by all means get another brand of receiver that has it out of the box. But I wouldn't assume it will never come to Yamaha. Some companies wait to get all the bugs worked out before they release Updates to a product's firmware, some dump it before it's ready and make customers Beta Testers as was the case with Google and the new Pixel 6/6 Pro phones.

Man Channa, I have to hand it to you... That was impressive.
You are uniquely meticulous in your variables awareness (crucial) AND you are tenacious in your determination. One HAS to possess, and apply, both tools where electronics (stupid little computers) are concerned.
For machines that are supposedly based on LOGIC they don't always behave like it.
WHY DEAR GOD WHY did it take over 1 hr for rebooted software to CLUE IN that there was new logic/ software in the routine? Narcolepsy, indifference, incompetence? Machines are more like people these days than They are computers. SKYNET ain't never goona happen 'cuz computers are too stupid.
BY THE WAY: YAMAHA OWES you a finders fee for pointing out variables/ issues "heretofore unknown" AND "undocumented" to their purchasers that they should have figured already. Network vs USB issue set aside for the moment (OMG!!!).

@@JoloNavarro I have a hard time upgrading because I bought the SR8002 new from Amazon for $600. The unit cost $2,000 but it was being replaced and it was on a crazy sale. I bought 2 😀 It has a copper chassis and shares the same toroidal transformer as the Marantz SR8015 which now costs $3,800 and came with a 5 year warranty vs 3.
It was a once in a lifetime deal and I knew that. It sounds insane in stereo with near 200Watts in power and can hold 120 watts for 5 channels which no other AVR can do today as they reserve power for other things.
To put this in comparison, I was reading the review on Audioholics of the A6A which has decent power for 2ch 168watts 0.01%THD but when it goes to 5 channels or 7 channels, it drops to 71watts and 51 watts. In comparison, my 8002 does 120 watts at 5 channels (nearly double).
The saying "they don't build them like they used to" is very true in AV receivers unfortunately. Tha A8A looks like a viable option once they figure things out as it might come close to my old receiver. My other option is the TX-RZ50 because of DIRAC and its normal price. Other receivers are ridiculously priced due to Atmos which I couldn't care less about. My home sounds like an IMAX theater already and DD+, Dolby TrueHD formats are more than enough.
Streaming providers limit their audio between 384kbps and 768kbps which is less than a DVD's soundtrack which had a whopping 1.5mbps so all you need is support for DD+ if you stream a lot. Surprisingly, the sound is insane with my 8002. It doesn't match Dolby TrueHD which is usually over 4mbps and goes to 6 but it's close enough.
You've probably been hearing a lot of DD sound which is what I also hear when using optical as it can't support DD+ (but can support up to 1.5mbps through DTS but that ship sailed in the streaming world) - there's a notable difference between DD and DD+. DD sounds awesome but DD+ is much better (night and day better) and I believe that's because of the compression and bitrate they use. DD must be

Because the AVR is supposed to be the hub of the Home Theater system. I only tested this AVR because 4K 120Hz HDR passthrough was a promised feature. It's a shame - these receivers held so much promise.
I'm not sure what the issue is. AV receivers have been around for 30 years now. Dolby digital, DTS are codecs that have been supported for a while. They take a signal, decode the audio and output the video. They don't handle the VRR, they don't handle the HDR, they just need to pass information to another device (the TV) through HDMI and generate sound. It's not like we invented stereo, 1080p, or 4k today and all the companies are screaming "Wait we can't handle it - we're still at 480i with Mono!"😀.
In terms of video, they are essentially just a glorified HDMI switcher which since Atmos was added costs 50% more.

I can't be bothered with these av receivers. I plan on getting a stereo receiver as a soundbar replacement. My budget is $400 and 99% of soundbars under $400 are only stereo anyway, but with less proficient drivers, aren't two-way, and can't stereo-image properly because of the fixed nature of the left and rights channels therefore they have to employ psychoacoustics which most TV's already have built-in anyway. So that's why I'm opting for a stereo receiver. Plus, I don't have the need for the many HDMI inputs, optical and coaxial inputs, and phono outputs of an av receiver. And a lot of av receivers across all price points have various HDMI problems anyway or you have to wait on "promised" functionality as seen here, so why bother, especially seeing as I'm not setting up a 3/5/7.1 surround system.

Plus I think we should give Yamaha time, they have introduced a new SOC "system on chip" that no other av company have an I think that will be great for us consumers, not buying a new receiver every year. It's obvious that Yamaha is finding it tricky in getting this new technology working.
