Initially I had my satellite box, Apple TV and Xbox series S connected to the avr and had all sorts of problems like hdmi switching and handshake or no signal at all from the Apple TV. I had to turn off the avr and turn it back on and still sometimes the issue persisted. Just got this from Yamaha regarding the 2.1 bug. Posting in case it helps someone else out. Good news! Your AV receiver already has the latest HDMI 2.1 board installed from the factory. There's nothing else you need to do! Want to see for yourself? Simply look at your firmware version in the front LCD menu. You’ll see an asterisk "*" on your firmware display. This means your AV receiver has the latest HDMI 2.1 board installed.
TSR-700 vs Denon S760h? I'm a costco shopper and both are about the same price. Is the yamahas bottle neck of 2.1a (24gb/s) but 100watts per channel better than the denons 2.1b but only 75watts per channel? Curious how much the bottleneck will affect future compatability and performance.
I think Denon uses a beefier power supply with larger caps, allowing for higher current. Denon, being from the same company as Marantz, tends to give a more accurate wattage rating. If you were to look on the back of Denon or Marantz receiver, chances are it would say something like "4-16 ohms impedance for all channels." Yamaha on the other hand, claims "4 ohms min" only on the front channels, and "6 min ohms min" on the rest. So, the Denon receiver's apparent ablilty to drive 4 ohm impedance on all channels seems to indicate it is capable of higher power output, as lower impedance 4 ohm loads "suck" more power (VI) or current (I) from the receiver. Thus the Denon 760H is "currently" the best budget receiver for HDMI 2.1 40gbps. You might possibly want to look at the Denon X1700H, as it is essentially the same amp, but with a bit higher wattage rating, a three year warranty (compared to 1 year for 760H), "higher quality components," and thus, a higher price tag. Yamaha amps tend to have a bigger drop in wpc than Denons with more than 2 channels being driven. Thus, though the Yamaha might have a higher rating in stereo mode than the Denon, once 5 channels or more are being driven, the Denon will have higher WPC output. (Receiver companies tend to rate amps with just 2 channels driven, so the wattage rating is deceptively inflated. The closer it is to 100 watts, the better). That being said, Yamaha amps in the past tended to be much more reliable, efficient, less glitchy, and run cooler than Denons. Denon and Marantz, too, have now started utilizing lower quality DACs in their receivers. It's too bad that the HDMI 2.1 inputs on the entry- level RXV6A and RXA2A etc. Yamahas are still capped at 24gbps even after the HDMI board upgrade. At least the RXA4A, RXA6A and RXA8A have 3 HDMI 2.1 40gbps ports after a firmware update. Heck, I might just break down and get the gargantuan Titan RXA6A for my next home cinema amplifier.

Thanks for the great videos on audio equipment. I have a 2014 model 5.1 LG Home theatre coupled to my TV via HDMI. The front LR, Centre, SubWoofer and Rear LR are all connected by wires running underground / within wall ducts. I put my serial number into their checker app and it said I "may benefit from an HDMI board exchange." Additionally, it said this, "Finally, some qualifying models built later in 2021 already have an updated HDMI board installed at the factory. If you can see this asterisk “*” on your Firmware display, STOP. Your model has already been updated at the factory and you do not need to send your AV receiver in for a HDMI replacement board. " here. So if yours has an asterisk with version 1.34 you may should not need a replacement board for 24Gbps (not that i am happy with that speed i feel misled). With corrent board installed from factory should look like this "*Version 1.34" without "Version 1.34".

Going with the higher end versions like the A4A might be a better option. There's also Denon/Marantz. Are you going to upgrade to a larger speaker setup at some point or just stick to two speakers?
Sir , may I answer your question . I just bought a rx v6 a week ago ; I am discarding it in favor of either Onkyo or maranz because rxv6 lacks crisp and clarity in terms of music particularly instrumental . I used to own two Onkyos and was fully satisfied but this rxv6 miserably fails my expectation ! This could be the reason why Yamaha avr prices are lower compared to other brands

Great reviews, I currently have an aventage AX1080 10 yrs old, I want to upgrade for music cast at atmos. I have kef Q bookshelf, center and rear dipole speakers. In your opinion is this receiver enough juice or should I spend double and do the aventage a4a. My A1030 can power my second Chanel at full blast and the 5.1 movie also at full blast never an issue. Or I could get the less expensive V6A to handle the 5.1 and use my 1030 to do the second zone. Really appreciate your insight. Thank you

I had 4k/120hz before v6a update by plugging ps5 directly through my lg cx and using eARC, but I had the same issue that you are referencing. I got the logo popping on/off, and saying something about a format issue. I got mine to work by simply turning on the lg cx & v6a, and setting up 8k mode on my target source for my ps5 on the v6a. Then turning off everything. I then turned on the v6a then my lg cx, and then booted up the ps5 and looked in my setting under my video resolution on my ps5. It now will show 120hz as an option under available frequencies for hdr and otherwise. Previously when I was using hdmi option 1 or 2 there was no option for 120hz. I believe I was having some kind of hdmi handshake issue. I know the lg's are capped at 40, but you might also make sure you have the correct cabling that can handle the extra data like a 8k 48Gbps cable. I'm using the Zeskit, and works great for me.

Great video, super helpful. Setup: PS5, TSR 700, BenQ TK850. I have the latest firmware, no board replacement yet. I'm unable to get my PS5 to run in Mode 1, I get a blank screen with a no signal found error. Because of my runs, I do have HDMI 2.0 cable running from the TSR 700 to the TV, but I am using the PS5 2.1 cable to connect PS5 to the AVR. Picture works fine in mode 2 but I don't get HDR. When I connect PS5 directly to my BenQ TK 850 (with PS5 cable), I get full functionality. When I connect the PS5 to the BenQ directly using the 4k HDMI 2.0, I get a no source detected error (same as when I go through AVR on Mode 1). Lastly, I can get 4k 60 HDR with my firestick going through the AVR using the HDMI 2.0 wires. So while I want to point to the wire as the culprit for the PS5 issue, the fact I can get other devices to push 4k 60 HDR through is causing me to doubt its the wires alone. Any help would be appreciated!!!
In my country you cannot even buy these Yamaha receivers anymore, or only from unofficial import sources at 50% higher price. Will this whole HDMI 2.1 disaster end anytime soon? The whole world is in shambles since the pandemic hit, literally nothing can go right. And it has almost been two years.

I got my board replacement and still not able to get 4k 120hz to show as available frequency( I did change it to 8k mode). I'm on LG C9 and RX-V6A does the receiver need factory reset or some kind of television setting. Only way I see 4k 120 is when going directly to TV.
eARC still isn't reliable on TVs, and eARC isn't available on current projectors. HDMI direct to receiver or pre/processor is optimal in most cases - especially with PS5 & Series S/X which lack dedicated audio outputs. Input lag can be minimized in a low-latency Game mode in the receiver or pre/processor.
Agreed! eARC is pretty buggy especially depending on your TV. Going from source > AVR > TV is the best way, BUT we need these AVRs to function properly. I don't think any projector would need ARC/eARC unless it has built in streaming apps.

Me too, this is all new to me and i'm wondering what specs are a big deal and what is just extra
I think Denon uses a beefier power supply with larger caps, allowing for higher current. Denon, being from the same company as Marantz, tends to give a more accurate wattage rating.
If you were to look on the back of Denon or Marantz receiver, chances are it would say something like "4-16 ohms impedance for all channels."
Yamaha on the other hand, claims "4 ohms min" only on the front channels, and "6 min ohms min" on the rest.
Can you use Surround Back and presence to drive 2 pairs of speakers in zone 2 ?
This is of course if you only choose 5.1
I did the update and it does work. But to be honest I just feel better plugging my series X directly into my LG and just using earc for sound.
Agreed!
have you had any eArc issues? I have a Samsung Q80T and it seems like its a lottery for eARC to work properly without sound cutting out!
Hi, i got Yamaha TSR 700 and using Klipsch RP280FA towers and RP450C and RP150 in my system with out Any external Amp, my room is 300sft, and i see the volume is very low. What should i do? Please suggest.
Xbox series x - TSR-709 (with board upgrade) - Samsung q90t

Any suggestions?
I have a UHD 4K eArc TV & the Yamaha-RX-V4A avr won't receive the over the air TV antenna signal thats connected to the TV. Geek squad came, but nothing could be done.
Agree with you for xbox but on PS5 the update 8k/4k120 allow to have RGB. So patch correct issue for PS5 as announced but for xbox need the board update.
Yeah, I figured as much. Same thing happened with Denon/Marantz AVRs
Thanks for the video
No problem!
Thanks for explaining this! What the model of the denon that has 3 uncompressed inputs?
The new Denon models have all HDMI ports support 40Gbps - amzn.to/3IBCaat
@@TechnoDad my my that is expensive. Fortunately crutchfield is based where I live and they have one V6A in stock and thanks to you I know how to determine if the board has been updated.
I was an early adopter of the RX-V6A and got tired of waiting for the update and sold it a couple of months ago, but due to the supply chain slow down I managed to sell it for the same price as I paid for it brand new 12 months ago!
I just put the money towards a LG G1 65" in the bf sales (£1999 here in the UK)....it's now officially a 2 OLED household 🤣
AYYYYY!! What's up Lee?? Good move my man! Enjoy the second OLED.

Thanks for the great videos on audio equipment. I have a 2014 model 5.1 LG Home theatre coupled to my TV via HDMI. The front LR, Centre, SubWoofer and Rear LR are all connected by wires running underground / within wall ducts. My Rear L cable is damaged and i do not want the entire floor to be dug up to replace it. Is there a way that I can transmit audio to Rear L over bluetooth - using BT transmitter / receiver combination? All the cable connections of the speakers and the AV receiver are bare wire - spring connectors. Thanks a ton !
The is fir sharing, Dylan. By any chance, can you post the link here?
Are those Martin Logan ESLs? I have a pair of Purities and a 12 inch Dynamo. Happy to see other ML fans.
Yes! ESL-Xs!! Great speakers! I just wish I had a larger room to get them off the wall a little more.
Thanks foe thr update. Could you kindly elaborate a bit more on the compressed and uncompressed aspect of the signal that you mentioned in the video? Does it make any difference in picture quality?
I'd like to know if this is a big deal or not, sometimes specs are misleading and most of us won't see a difference. Anyone?
Mines working 100% on my LG cx. I verified all inputs amd passing 120 hz also passing freesync and low latency mode on my cx. My only gripe is that after playing a 120hz game and I go back to home dashboard on my xbox my screen turns black for a second
Great! That includes HDR and Dolby Vision as well?
I had a V6A on order from November and got sick of waiting... And ordered the Denon X1700H. The day the Denon was delivered, and before I opened and installed it I got the email that the V6A was shipped. I really love the look of the V6A but it sounds like the X1700H is the way to go performance wise?? I have a XBox Series X and a gaming PC with a 3090. The newer V6As don't have upgraded motherboards with higher bandwidth HDMIs do they? The V6A comes Thursday... Which should I keep?!
Hi ! Great video. Do you you Know the serial number from the old board?
No, sorry...
Hey I’m so confused, how does one simply update their receiver? I’ve plugged into my laptop but nothing pops up 😢. It’s been working for at least 2 months on my projector and now suddenly stop working with the projector.. I called the company I bought it from and they said it probably needs an firmware update, but I can’t use the projector to do navigate that… I’ve tried with my laptop but nothing pops up for me to access its settings… this is so annoying it’s new it should be easier then this… but looking at this video thi is is a common issue and there’s really no way of fixing if?
informative video.Got that update a week ago i wondered what it was going to do. It doesnt really matter to me as i am not a Gamer.
Thanks!
Thanks man! Had a question... How does this AVR perform when it comes to music listening "hifi" ? Thinking about getting an AVR with two klipsch speakers for movies, TV and music (streaming only through Spotify and Apple Music) ? Would you recommend anything else ? Thanks a lot
Get the avantage version.
Going with the higher end versions like the A4A might be a better option. There's also Denon/Marantz. Are you going to upgrade to a larger speaker setup at some point or just stick to two speakers?
@@TechnoDad Thanks a lot for your answer. Probably gonna stick with two speakers for now. In any case, my biggest setup would be a 3.1 setup.
@@rvltn3962 try a 3.1.2 setup 👌
Sir , may I answer your question . I just bought a rx v6 a week ago ; I am discarding it in favor of either Onkyo or maranz because rxv6 lacks crisp and clarity in terms of music particularly instrumental . I used to own two Onkyos and was fully satisfied but this rxv6 miserably fails my expectation ! This could be the reason why Yamaha avr prices are lower compared to other brands
If I bought one of these units brand new from Best Buy today, what are the chances I'd end up with the old board?
Hi! It should probably have the fix, but I wouldn’t know for sure.
Hello, I'm choosing a new reciever and I can't decide between Yamaha rx-v4a vs Marantz nr1510. Does anyone have any advice or own experience. thank you for any answer
Dang, I need a board update. How do I do that? Does that mean I literally have to replace the board?
I would contact Yamaha tech support and see what's up.
Techno Dad, I need your help to know something about this AV receiver, can you change the surround decoder on any Cinema DSP mode? Can you use Neural X in combination with Sci FI, Dolby Surround with Drama? My RX V 581 only allow me to use DTS Neo 6 with the Cinema DSP 3D.
Oh man, Jose…I have to send in my AVR as my puppy chewed through the power cable. I can’t turn that thing on.
Any vouchers for people to purchase newer updated systems as a result of this?
I don’t think so…
Great reviews, I currently have an aventage AX1080 10 yrs old, I want to upgrade for music cast at atmos. Thank you
Yesterday I was trying get 4k@120hz on xbox series x and it's working fine but there is no Dolby vision 120hz only through 60hz 👎😖
What’s our best case scenario, 4K120 non hdr? I have an rx a2a.
If you don’t have the board update then yes. I am hoping everything will work with the updated board. I still don’t know 100%. Another viewer stated it took 10 days to get his AVR back. Also(m, they don’t have the serial number lookup on their website just yet.
Just sent in my V6A for board replacement, got it it back and 4k/120Hz still isn't recognized by my Xbox. I have an LG OLED and everything works plugged directly into the TV. 8K mode is enabled on HDMI 1, where my xbox is plugged in. Anything I'm missing here?
Did you enable it under Xbox settings as well?
@@dedog2233 Yes.
Plugged into the TV it automatically enables and works. Plugged into receiver it drops to 1440p 120hz and wont let me enable 4k/120. I just replaced all of my HDMI cables with 8k cables to make sure that wasn't the issue. Didn't fix anything.
Thanks for information, Done the update (Belgium ,Europe ).greetings Jan
Nice!
Bought my rxv4a pre owned eBay couple hundred quid back in April . Update is excellent for 4k120 with rtx2060 and also ps5. Do not have an Xbox though to try that.

Difficult to glean from the video but do you think the A6A and A8A will have uncompressed 40Gbps port support? As always great content Techno Dad!
Hi! I have no clue. I'll have to email them and ask.
No
and still no update for the Yamaha RX-A8A... they said it was basically ready to go back in Aug.
I heard they are not coming until February, and it could just be one of the updates.

Right now, I have to run a cable from my PC (I have the nvidia 3080) but it has to run straight to the TV because the receiver is missing that firmware update.
I would like to hide the cable but cant. And I’d like to use DTS:X from my PC because the LG C9 doesn’t like that particular codec very much.
Sure, would love the Auro 3D but I just want the basic 4K/120 passthrough!
Just so strange it’s taking so long? I get it with video drivers and all but receivers? Blurgh.

Super annoyed that I can not get the update to DL via internet or a usb thumb drive. I picked the TSR-700 and a full Klipsch 7.2.2 system to run with my PS5. Sure I can just keep doing the PS5 to eARC but what's the point of this receiver.
Yeah, it's a tough one, Mike. I still run my Series X directly to the TV.
@@TechnoDad After power cycling the AVR and doing a internet reset. I was able to download the update. Found that my 8k cable was not up to snuff so after replacing that I am indeed getting 4K 120 .

Hi! Awesome! Are you getting HDR as well?

PS5 to V6A to LG CX and for me after update i only have 4k 60hz hdr that inhad before. I tried to get the 4k 120hz by disableing the hdr but nothing. And if i select the 8k option the screen gets black and hdr loggo is poping off and on but no image. It looks like is trying to switch but it cant.

That's no good. Try Mode 2 for that specific HDMI input.
@@TechnoDad I tried all 3 modes, one and two flashed white flashes then nothing. 3 was black.
I should report that I got timely helpful support from Yamaha about my issue. The problem was after the firmware update I needed to go to the HDMI input for the Apple TV and select UHD Full Color on. I am able to run 4K60 Dolby vision with chroma 4:2:2. I also need to point out that Yamaha's support ( Keith) was very timely, even checking back when I was not available for a couple days. Something tells me I should wait for next years receiver's?
Hi! I would wait to see what's going on. Also, it depends on your budget and all that. I do have some Marantz AVRs in stock: SR5015, SR6015, SR7015, & SR8015.
Just updated my a2a and it does all of it. Vrr & Dolby vision & HDR @4k 120hz with the series x. My tv is an lgcx.
Finally
Woot woot!!!

Never connect any video source to a receiver. Always connect video sources directly to a TV.
eARC still isn't reliable on TVs, and eARC isn't available on current projectors.
Glad I did not buy one
