The way Yoshida mentors these now seasoned developers is so humbling. I myself learned a lot watching this. Thank you to everyone involved in this production! It's excellent.
Yeah Puppeteer was a very solid game with a very flashy art style. Can't believe it wasn't just put out as a PS4 release title if it was done in time for that. Sure, it wouldn't use the PS4 power to do anything special, but the PS4 had so few launch titles that quantity was more important at that time. Not to say the quality was bad, just not a game for showing off what a console can do
26:42 love what Shuhei Yoshida says here. It makes me a little sad too though, because for me PlayStation used to provide exactly what indies did too. Puppeteer is one of my all time favorite 2D platformers, probably my second below Super Mario Bros 3, high praise. I think it has such great art design, I love the story and voice work, the controls are flawless, rock steady framerate (even if it’s not 60). I was so sad it got buried and never ported to PS4 and seems to be trapped on PS3 to never be appreciated for being a platforming masterpiece. Gravity Rush 1 and 2, I’d give anything for them to be ported to PC. I’ve said it so many times, but it bares repeating, those games just feel so unique to move in and it gives such a unmatched feeling. I just love them and the world created. Japan Studio had always been pumping out so many creative, interesting, different games. And with Media Molecule pumping out creative bangers like LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway (a masterpiece on Vita), and Dreams. The PS I love is gone, and they focus on a very narrow, albeit successful, type of game. With very few exceptions to the rule like Concrete Genie or Dreams, but I have to wonder how long that will even last with them wanting to make tons of online games which Sony has never been able to make work post-PS2 Socom. I digress. Great video as always, can’t wait to support the game!
Old PlayStation do Indies before Indies was a thing, damn, All those not perfect but amazing and creative games that give the PS brand personality, now gone...
I love the nostalgic mood (illumination, photography, music) of these videos and what they make me feel when talking about times past. I play games since the late 80s and early 90s. I miss a lot of things from the past, but I love a lot of things from modern times, and I appreciate that these videos are not just melancholy retrospectives, but that they are also pushing the way forward, discussing new games and approaches to the game industry and game design. Bokeh Game Studio, you still haven't released your first game, but you are already a treasure.
This was a fantastic inside look. We need more of this from PlayStation. I would love to see PlayStation blog highlight even sections of great interviews like this as a segment on the Blog front page montly or something. Esp. from those of you we respect in the industry.
It's kinda crazy how much Yoshida-san contributed to the overall image i had in my head for Playstation's Japanese first party output without even knowing anything about him back in the PS1/PS2 days. When i think that some of my favorite games of all time like Ico would probably never even had existed if it wasn't him supporting the talented developers at SCEJ it makes me appreciate him even more.Or for how he kept pushing for The Last Guardian to come out. Of course he also almost "killed" another favorite game of mine (Demon's Souls on PS3) but he more than made up for it with making Bloodborne "happen". :) Unfortunately (for me) Sony's image has changed a lot since those days (with their emphasis now being on big AAA Western games) but i will always support developers like Toyama-san or Ueda-san regardless of platform because they (and a few others) were the ones that made me appreciate the medium for what it can be possible with it. Very interesting discussion and great cinematography as usual in this video from the talented Archipel guys behind the camera.
These videos are beautiful, you guys are so talented ! I can’t wait for your next game I already know that it‘ll be incredible ! It’s gonna be a day one buy for me 🔥🔥🔥
This one is amazing, guys. It's really nice to see you chat over games and the industry in such a relaxed mood, sharing a beer. It feels like one of the @Archipel videos. Keep them coming! (But don't get too distracted with your own production deadlines! haha). Looking forward to what you create. Kanpai!
Happy to be part of the community if you build one. Bokeh Game Studio looks promising and even if the first game fails in an area, I would still feel compelled to try the next thing they make. I have faith in you guys.
these are the coziest videos I have probably ever seen, the way they are filmed is beautiful, and the music in the background is very atmospheric. really, I haven't seen such videos before, especially from a game company. and it's a rare opportunity to watch conversations with veterans of the game industry.
a real tragedy to this day that Siren never caught on in the west at least not as much as it did in Europe compared to the U.S., same with Gravity Rush as well, so here's to hoping Slitterhead does well.
9:42 Wait! So... Toyama-san had TWO games in mind for the PS Vita (Gravity Rush and a horror game)?! Now I wanna learn more about this "canceled" (?) horror game.
Siren: Blood Curse (as it was known in the West) should totally get a remaster for the PS5 and/or PS4! I still have my PS3 copy but more people should be able to experience it.
I played and loved all games mentioned. I can't wait to see what this studio will be able to create. Please do your best. すべてのゲームをプレイし、大好きになった。このスタジオでどんな作品ができるのか楽しみです。がんばてください。
Sony moving away from Japan will hurt them creatively and eventually financially, more than they know. I respect Shuhei Yoshida, but he really needs to leave Sony. They clearly undervalue him and his experience.
While I agree in certain terms financially it harms them (mostly in Japan, and with Japanese game fans we who don’t want censorship) that’s a drop in the bucket compared to who they want. It is less money than they could get had they just kept doing things how they were before California took over. And it ultimately harms Japanese devs put into a hard spot. Do they try to keep their audience where it was by changing the content, or do you risk it and abandon the whole platform and hope your fans will go with you? Creatively it’s already felt. The only saving graces are Media Molecule who I could see being shuttered, and Concrete Genie devs Pixelopus, who I also could see shut down eventually unless they shift to the soulless, third person shooter, narrative game factory. Those studios and their games are not really supported by SIE at all, just like they didn’t support Japan Studio very well. SIEA also rarely supported SIEE games. They’d get next to no promotion, I remember not even knowing if the Ps Vita Invizimals would even come out in the west. Same thing with stuff like Soul Sacrifice and Freedom Wars. Shouldn’t have to wonder. They screwed a lot of things. That SS/SS Delta and FW weren’t even ported to PS4 is crazy to me. But the lack of support for Japan has been around awhile. It’s such a bummer. I used to love PS. It had everything I wanted, other than a lack of first party (or second) JRPGs which they used to release. But they lost their way hard and failed so many great IP and games. I’ll never forgive them for closing Liverpool or Japan Studio.
Shuhei Yoshida was THE playstation guy everyone liked. He got Fromsoft to make Bloodborne for Playstation and defeated arguably the hardest boss in the game live on stream. He was in the greatest Playstation ad ever with the sharing games on playstation 4 skit. The guy was good at his job and he actually PLAYS the games. Feels like a bygone era now. Good that indie devs get to benefit from his experience since that’s where the most interesting stuff is probably going to be now, but I can’t help but be sad that Playstation has changed into another cookie cutter mainstream video game company whose products lack any distinguishing feature from the competition. The new corporate guys are hollow husks and I simply don’t like them or the bs they push.
Yoshida said that Demon's Souls was an unplayable bad game and he also let Allan Becker turn The Last Guardian into a standar PS cinematic game, so I'm not sure his input in Siren and Gravity Rush was truly valuable from a creative standpoint.
Demon’s Souls he admitted he was wrong about years ago. Stop living in the past. And a lot of his criticism is correct, like Santa Monica and God of War, he said it was a mess at the time he saw it. Which the devs admit it was, but he still gave them the freedom to do their job and make a great game in the end. Most companies would cancel projects having so many issues. Sony used to be based and push out numerous amazing titles WW that wouldn’t see the light of day under normal circumstances.
After releasing TLG, Fumito Ueda said in an interview that the PS3 version worked perfectly and that it had more content and animations for Trico than the final PS4 version. He added that changing the platform was a purely commercial decission and the technical problems were an excuse to delay it. I belive him and not Yoshida, who repeated that it was a PS3 game even after they stopped development and started porting it to PS4.
@@Vinicius_Berger You're not president of a big company, so your opinion doesn't trash the work that took three years of development by dozens of exploited people nor prevents the result being enjoyed by millions of players with different tastes.
Yoshida was also the catalyst for the Westernization of PlayStation is general. I honestly have little respect for somebody like him despite his nice and Frank personality.
I really hope you guys could work together again on Gravity Rush 3.
Hopefully Shuhei and Playstation can work with Bokeh in some capacity in the future and support them as they grow.
