  • In any survival situation, food is one of first things you’ll want to focus on. In this video, Jon Faulkner and Alan Kay talk about the advantages of fishing with yoyo reels to collect food.
Passive food collection is key - you’ll want a trap that you can set and forget. This frees you up to work on other core things (water, shelter, etc.) that need to be addressed for survival.
Yoyo reels are a very effect way of catching fish without having to sit on a bank all day waiting for a bite.

Great video on a useful ready to go item that works. We used those growing up and you can go from digging up small worms to a stringer of panfish quicker than most might think. Thanks for sharing !

I'm a bit peeved. I'm 63, my dad was a fisherman, I've fished from the florida keys to nome alaska, and I only heard of these YO -YO things just yesterday. I've been camping near water a million times snd could have used a thousand of these. Can you see why I'm peeved?

I bought a couple of these, but unless you move all your survival stuff to a base camp or have your car, it becomes too heavy to carry all the gear!
Minimum of 6 reels = 1/2 lb +. Start adding all your other survival and edc gear and you won't get far with your 60lb+ pack.
I'm sure as long as I have a hook and line, I could rig up some trap like these reels with triggered falling logs or rocks.
Starting to see bushcraft is better than carrying heaps of equipment.

I love me some yoyos. Caught tons of fish on them over the years. Even used them when I got stuck at home for a week during an ice storm last year and caught a lot of catfish. I always keep several of these in any tackle box or bugout bag. A tip if you're going for larger fish like catfish: bait these with a good circle hook and use a large piece of cut bait like the rib section of another fish or the head of a bluegill. It makes for tough bait that lasts a long time and can't be stolen as easily and the smaller fish can't get their mouths on it good enough to set off the yoyos as much. But a catfish can still easily get the whole thing in their mouth. Only thing you'd have to worry about is a turtle but in a survival situation that's perfectly good food as well. I recommend spraying yoyos down with some WD-40 after being used or they will eventually rust and no longer work. They do make some galvanized yoyos that apparently don't rust but I haven't tried them. You could also use these for snares on land, and they have a lot of cordage on them

Yeah I bought a bunch of the yo-yo's when I started prepping and getting bug out bags together. I think I bought like 12 to 18 of them. Just in case and to have enough to help with catching fish for a survival situation. Might pull them out and give a try here Inna week or two...

Based on the first comment, this isn't a going to be popular with the survival purists. With that said, instead of just a tie-off, install a 4-6" spring to the tie-off hole and a small bungee to that which can be looped around a tree. None of this is my original idea - there's a good YT video already posted. Also, use in conjunction with Speed Hooks for better chance of landing your catch.

This is intriguing because of the price point. Fishing gear isn't cheap.im a newb at fishing and there are so many kinds rods and reels out there that I want but are so expensive.ive been researching for only a few days and still confused how to choose

  • @greywolfonthetrailgreywolf1769

1 question I have do you still require a fishing license and are they legal to use in every state thanks Best Regards GreyWolf

    • @TUKByV
      @TUKByV 7 месяцев назад +1

You have to check your state regulations carefully. And re-check annually. My state even has slightly different regs for regions of the state, and even specific bodies of water. Even if these aren't legal in your area, I think they still have value in a long-term hard time.

Hmm I'll stick to my spear guns and free diving for 20# fish.
Jk good vid. Going to use my yo yo's kayaking with my daughters to get some bass but hopefully perch.
After that I'm going spearfishing in the ocean.... Lobster and stripped bass await. Happy hunting!
