Knife Making - Forging 3 Knives: An Exercise in Consistency
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 окт 2024
- I haven't done any knife making in quite some time now and thought doing some practice pieces to refresh the memory a bit before jumping into a more elaborate knife making venture, might do me a bit of good. So I made three simple knives with the goal of having the shape, size and grinds on the blade be pretty consistent with each other. Everything went alright but I did mess up the first 2 handles a bit as far as shape goes. It was only at the third handle I got the shape I had in mind but such is the way of doing things freehand with nothing drawn.
Thanks for watching!

I have a whole bunch of homework to do for monday but hey, it's make'n'create, can't wait !
I love your timing with your hammer strokes
Thats one serious belt grinder, great jobs knives look awesome
nice prctical knifes with beautyful simple design. The handles will lay good in hand . Two day ago I finished a knife as well.....It is a joy to see your videos all the time...and your new workshop seems to be a joy to work in....good job
I love your forge design.
Gorgeous blades and the consistency is something to aspire to, glad to see you back at it again mate 👍
i look your works for long times , i am a knife maker too but i like your style - feels light and balance!
Nice work! Love knives like this
I like your knife handles I carve mine with a knife a thick tree branch it takes patience but they turn out nice they remind me of an old ww1 trench knife
Condos forletteing the finish soak in makes the wood stronger and more durable. Most people would just dip it in and go from there. By letting it soak in makes a much better handle. Great work.
Incredible work as always!
you make it look easy.
Отличная работа! Успехов!
Love your work, well done.
Gorgeous knives!
Really good video. Thank you.
I have right around ten blades all on my counter that have been there for close to half a year
Now I’m in gear and work n on a rasp Bowie
Good work bro 👍💪🏻
Hi is the large hole bored for the tang filled with anything other than epoxy? I’ve this done on Japanese handles but with a wooden dowel. Your method looks so much easier. Will epoxy alone hold the blade in that large hole?
훌륭한 작업입니다
да
Nice work mate. You should consider taping up the blades, it will make sanding safer and protect the steel when in the vice.
hi
Выкладывай видео почаще. Жду с нетерпением каждый ролик.
beautiful!
There is never a bad time for a Make n Create video. I'm always so fascinated by your works! Here's a question. Have you ever considered trying your hand at wood/metal working like making a banded chest, or barrel?
He made a chest once that's kinda like that
Love the rustic look. Functional, yet still beautiful. A real craftsman. I’ve heard you shouldn’t soak wood in hardening oils (linseed, tung, etc) for long periods of time. That keeps the oils from working correctly. Couldn’t tell how long you left them in there.
Nice knives. I like the Scandi-grind. All 3 look pretty consistent to me. I fail to see any mess up on the 2.
hi brother
That's Art.
When you get your skills all together, do you think you could make a anglo-saxon/viking/germanic seax?
would be interesting to see, indeed.
Your filming and editing rivals you knife making skills nice job ,new subscriber here greetings from UK .
Super vidéo. Can you make more only wood creations please. I am french sorry for my enflish I am 14 years old so I don't have a good level
very interesting technique with how you forged them
Enjoyed the normalizing
really perfect job
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
HE BACK
can you make a video about your tools and how reliable you think they are? I'd also appreciate if you would just tell me where to find the grinder :) thanks and great video
Where do you buy your steel, is it in Denmark ore some place else?
Nice work!!
Great video as always. And a nice long one 18 minutes
Muy buen trabajo saludos
What oil did you dip them in for the handle finish and how long did you leave them in there?
Without knowing for sure, but having some experience myself, I would say it's probably boiled, cold pressed Linseed oil. And I would leave the handles in there for at least 6 hours depending on how dense a grain you're working with, some might need a whole night to soak it up. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm doing it wrong, I'm always eager to learn.
Probably linseed oil.
Шикарные ножи👍👍
He makes forging look so easy...
It can be easy but not when you first start
What do you use on your stones? I use my gun oil by Remington
What glue did you use
Nice work sir
wow nice job
Where do u get ur steel ?
I need some
BTW it looks great
believe it or not you can go to junk yards and get the Spring Leaf (or ask them for it), you can usually get them for cheap. Another steel is the heavy suspension springs that come from big rigs or large trucks.
Both are high carbon steel and suited for knife making ( or tool making if you want to put in the time)
StarKnight619 ok thanks
nice video
Классные ножи делаешь.
Awesome job man!! Where can I go to purchase some of your knives??
Great effort!
Nice Work
Great video and great work. I think the only thing I could say that might need a little bit more attention would be spending more time hand sanding and polishing the blade after the quenching and tempering. In the right light you can see scratches. But other than that fantastic.

Is it possible to make red hot steel using a bbq? I'd like to try to make my first homemade knife, nothing fancy, no forging, but rather a simple disc cut knife then sharpened but for the hardening/quenching phase I was wondering if this was somehow possible with something as minimalistic as a bbq? Thanks.
You can use a setup that consists of a cast iron pipe some lump charcoal and a hole in the ground if you want. So long as you can get a peice of steel a bit hotter than the temperature at which a magnet stops sticking to it you can harden a knife.
Perfect
The one in the middle for me please 👍👍
Nice job now you will have to make 3 sheaths next time 👍
Wow again you amaze me honestly man i love your work and i soon hope that one day i can make stuff like you it is my dream and i want to make the same stuff you do but im 14 and i dont have the equipment so you wanna hang out some day😂 anyways keep doing what your doing

Man, I love all of your videos! Mycket fint jobbat på alla projekter :) I'm really interested in your sharpening regime, is it possible to get an explanation or even a short video showing us just how you usually do it?
10..👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Tung oil?
Linseed oil I think.
It could also be walnut oil.
@@garethbaus5471 In the other video of Make n Create, it is said that he use linseed oil.
And the viscosity of this oil looks like linseed oil.
Здравствуйте сколька стоит такой нож
In the old days, some knives were left with their "as annealed" blue color on the blade. Only the final edge was bright.
Blue isn't a high enough temperature to be considered annealed, but it is a bit too high of a temperature for a properly tempered knife.
@@garethbaus5471 Good points. As I recall they were the pretty "peacock" blue, as though it was done for appearance. Maybe they messed up the tempering to some degree by doing that. I'll see if I can find some photos of them.
@@garethbaus5471 The knife I actually saw that way was an 18th Century Fur Trade knife with about a 6" to 7" blade and a reddish grip. I think this link is to a photo of a similar one: DDAB79AF-B075-48E7-A835-BC3FE717F253
@@bgurtek the color was probably a result of oxidation from exposure to a corrosive substance either as a deliberate forced patina or through normal use the colors can look simmilar to temper colors in some cases but are not a result of being heated. FYI your link doesn't work.
@@garethbaus5471 Thanks. I'm not really that familiar with knife making. But, what I understand of the process, you're most likely correct.
Love the blades. The handles, not so much. Too much taper that practically moves your your hand to the unguarded edge.
What type of coal is that?
Black
There are different races of coal now?
