@@PiotrBarcz I have found one, but I am waiting for the price to go down (It goes down £5 every friday that the item is not bought) It was £90, now £65 soon to go down to £60.
Nate...my dad played piano exactly like this. I have watched this over and over....and then I am a kid again in the 1950's, listening to dad and his great stride and ragtime style.
you DO realize that the base of the song is played with a one person and then LOTS of notes are added by another. it was not just person playing this piano roll. no ONE person could play this many notes at a time
You never heard my father. Striding with both left and right hands. Do I know player piano rolls often add additional notes and sustain notes otherwise not sustainable? Sure. Either way, the Sandman piece is what it is. I think a huge part is the playing of melody with full chords. Great.
It's a bit eerie or unearthly watching those keys moving by themselves and producing such a catchy, perfectly executed piece of music. Thanks for uploading this.
@@imploud I am from Poland, and judging by the letters in your name I'm going to guess you are from either Slovakia, Czechoslovakia or the Czech Republic :)
@@PiotrBarcz Very well, I am from Czechia :D (Czechoslovakia doesn't exist yet, we split in Czechia and Slovakia 30 years ago.) I am extremely surprised that in Poland it was possible to obtain a pianola :O! How did you get it? (You can answer in Polish, I understand a bit :D)
"Sid Laney" is a pseudonym of J. Lawrence Cook, a master arranger for solo piano, and the most recorded piano roll artist of all time. Very influential on jazz pianists during the 20s and 30s.
Fell madly in love to this song at 16 -- unrequited of course -- and it revives all those emotions every time I hear it. Sixteen will always be the magical age for me.
The little elephant seems to enjoy "Mr. Sandman" almost as much as I do. Thanks for sharing this magnificent piece, The piano is in wonderful tune as well!
Ya know, whoever once said that 3 hands are paying this, I think is correct. Over and over, a note, like a 7th, is held, mid keyboard, while both the right and left hand are doing their thing. Obviously some enhancement added during manufacture. But wonderful!
The extra notes are often added to make the arrangement more exciting, but the roll's music certainly isn't playable by one human in that case. They do have "4 hand arrangements" that represent two pianists playing at once. Remember, the standard rolls played here were arranged and not necessarily recorded. Reproducing rolls (which I don't yet feature on my channel) were made with a recording piano that actually recorded a pianist's performance in real time (Rachmaninoff is one such famous example). But even with those rolls the arrangers went in after recording and made adjustments/modifications.
I clearly remember a firm that created & sold piano rolls. It was in an inner Sydney suburb. I wonder what happened to the building. Probably the usual - converted into something completely different.
The green cloth is just an artifact of the professional rebuilder who worked on my air motor and tracking mechanism. All other work on the player/piano was done by me, but the air motor/tracking mechanism I couldn't quite get right, so I sent it out. I'm glad he recovered them with green cloth - it's my favorite color! From what I understand many original players would have had black, green, or a red/magenta cloth as the standard.
@@johncarcher they can all be seen when you take it apart. I've had this entire piano torn apart before. The hidden bellows in the stack are black in color.

It's so weird to look at a piano that is playing itself but the melody is really great. Awesome!
I remember the first time the computer people in the office took over my keyboard; scared the shit out of me for a second.

May I ask why the motor in your piano has green bellows/ air pumps? Was that standard for Behr Bros Pianos, or just a touch you added? Thanks.
