Yeah, when Fox Family was showing reruns of The Real Ghostbusters in 1998/99, I really noticed the change in animation quality once they got to season's six (1990) and seven (1991). I am guessing that DIC decided to switch up the animation studios from Japan to Korea since the show had been around for a while and the ratings had dropped off significantly (during season four in 1988, when the show was renamed Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters the ratings dropped quite a bit when compared to the first three seasons), so they were looking to cut costs just to pump out a few more episodes before cancelation. Also, I would imagine the recycling of animation footage from past episodes was another cost saving measure.
@@Dargonhuman I see. So I had it backwards. The one with the gorilla was the original, but the name was to let the gorilla have the original name. Thanks for explaining.

Well, the producers asumed that Slimer is the best choice to draw more children for the show, instead of four middle aged man. gladly, Extreme Ghostbusters made Slimer into the Comic Relief again and focused more in the main characters.
@@MarinetteDupainCheng564 Yeah, the producers clearly failed to recognize that children viewed the Ghostbusters as cool adults. Also, I believe that one of the reasons children responded so well to Slimer as he was was because his reactions to what the Ghostbusters were doing were similar to how kids respond to real life adults.
Had this been an earlier season, and they stayed away from the parody of The Simpsons and Married with Children by someone that clearly has seen neither, I could see the concept of a family of ghosts squatting in the Ghostbusters' fire house as a home being a clever gag episode. But by then, the series went from show made with kids in mind to show directly made for kids at the suggestions of people who had never come in contact with a child. Though I seriously wonder if the character designers are to blame for the family being visually based on The Simpsons, rather than the Bundy clan. That said, I'm surprised they got away with a fart joke back then. What was this, like early 90's? "Butt" was a forbidden word until Tiny Toons used it, farts wouldn't be considered okay for kids for some time.
Now with today's world of Fox/FX/Adult Swim/Hulu/Netflix they could do Ghostbusters animation with the adult humor of the first movie, and do a Simpsons/Bundy's parody right.
@Ghostbusters News: Its funny, I never would have guessed as a kid that some of the episodes from the 1990 season like this one reused animation from the second season. As an adult, it is really noticeable when the animation shifts from season six to reused animation from the earlier seasons. I am guessing that DIC did this a cost saving measure, since they were known to produce many of their cartoons as cheaply as possible. When I was a kid, I did notice that the Grungee family did look similar to the Simpsons since I had seen a few ads for the show when I was channel surfing. I agree, Egon using the Proton Pack to propel himself through the Firehouse is one of the few decent moments of this episode. Even as a kid, I felt this story was a major step down from where The Real Ghostbusters began. Still at least the toy line had some quality toys like the Ecto Bomber and the Slimed Heroes action figures. Also, I was reading The Real Ghostbusters comic books from NOW comics, when I could find them. Funnily, enough besides The Real Ghostbusters, NOW comics also published a comic book series tie in for Married .... I still like the fact that they didn't bust them at the end, I expected it. I recently watched an EGB episode, where at the end a ghost woman came looking for her dog (that they had just trapped), and they just imprison her too. It didn't set right with me, since (interdimensional weirdness or not) it wasn't a "undead haunting spirit" but just an (interdimensional) alien with obvious intelligence and civilization to be owning a pet. See, we can all over think these things!
WOW! You are the first youtuber to actually acknowledge that the first seasons of the Real Ghostbusters were animated in Japan ( and thus technically count as "anime" ) thank you! ^^
I could tell the differences compared between the earlier and later seasons. I actually preferred the series music score before season 6, that was actually captivating and spooky however after a while it did seem repetitive. Once they started changing things like either the voice casting or animation style that's when it felt different and not necessarily better. I do think there decent episodes throughout but it's definitely more cringeworthy towards the end of the series. If they kept it as true to the source material as possible it would have sustained a longer lifespan.
Matt Groening himself was actually always super cool with non-licensed uses of the Simpsons. He even collects Simpsons bootleg dolls and merchandise. The only time he personally took legal action was against "Nazi Bart" T-shirts. Fox on the other hand could take legal action from time to time.
Still, I am glad that DIC got J. Michael Straczynski back to write a few episodes for seasons four and five with the stipulation, that he could write the episodes how he wrote for the show in the first two seasons. "Janine You've Changed" is still an outstanding episode of the show, and one of his best in my humble opinion.
Question: The "Homer" ghost says "I wasnt born yesterday - in fact, I wasn't born!" - I don't remember Real Ghostbusters lore very well because I haven't actually seen the show since I was a kid, when it originally was airing - Are the ghosts in the show not supposed to be dead humans? Did they retcon this to make it more kid friendly than the movie or something?
If I remember right its a bit of both. Sometimes they are dead humans, sometimes they are entities of some sort of primordial or demonic nature comparable to Gozer that have always been. It varied depending on what the story needed them to be.
Im pretty sure the lore in show not all ghosts or spectral beings are in fact the souls of dead humans. I mean they had a bizarro ghost world with humanbusters. so unless the GBs are half dead, a ghost Ray knock off really doesnt make sense.
Ghosts in Ghostbusters have a bunch of different origins. There's the classic human ghosts, and a lot of the 'brightly coloured blob' ghosts like Slimer and such are manifestations of various kinds with no original living origins. Then there's demons, deities, creatures from folklore, entities from other dimensions- all kinds of stuff.
This kind of reminds me of when Extreme Dinosaurs mocked Seinfeld of all things. A wise man once said "never reference a better movie in your crappy one" and the same applies to television.
No, in the episode "Guess What's Coming To Dinner" they play generic instrumental music when Bug is playing his custom stereo. When Peter and Egon rush to save the day, the remixed version of the Ghostbusters theme song then kicks in over it.
Thanks for clarifying. I was honestly taken aback by The Bartman playing and now feel that (even tho it would have been very expensive) it was a missed opportunity, at least IF the song was released by the time this episode was made anyway…
