Although Canada is now fully independent, King Charles III is also the King of Canada.

Don't forget that George Washington was a decorated and respected, British commander in the 7 years war against France. British imports also increased massively under his presidency.

Well, that was fun. I haven't seen some of this footage for a long time. The King spent most of his visit in Canada but the American interlude was important in building upon trans Atlantic shared values in the event of war breaking out in Europe as indeed it would that coming September. Their visit was a triumph to the relief of the King and Queen concerned Americans might be more sympathetic to the Duchess of Windsor, the American for whom the King's elder brother abdicated in order to marry. Mrs. Roosevelt was amazed at how the Queen could be so flawlessly ' perfect ' at all times. And FDR, not surprisingly, charmed the King as he could everyone else. They also had hot dogs at the Roosevelt's Hyde Park country house along with FDR's mother. No one dare say no.

This was a lovely step back in time. Thank you. There's a 'Letters Live' video on RUclips that you might like to react to. Olivia Colman reads a letter, written during WW2 by The Queen Mother, about a German air attack on Buckingham Palace. The 'Bertie' she refers to is George V1 - her husband and our King. It's just a few minutes long, but it's another peep behind the curtain of that time. It will make you smile.

My brother had to do a demo for her when he was in the Royal Navy.. it was a talk.. a short one.. about his job in Marine Engineering. He was 17. She was so chatty to him asking him where he came from. He said.. a little town in Gloucestershire YM.. she said.. Oh.. I know the county (we knew this. of course, lol) where exactly? He named our town and she said. Oh I know it.. Charming town. one travels through it in a car you know, on ones way from the Queen's flight at RAF Brize Norton.' We knew this as it was local to us and not only that our neighbour across the street had been a Squadron Leader and flew the Royal family often from there. He said her teeth were very discoloured. not so much neglect but age and she was plastered in heavy makeup and very short. but she was utterly charming and he loved the encounter and she charmed all present.. she was quite old then and he very young. she had arrived gamely via helicoptor on to his Aircraft carrier, landing on the deck.. his first ship. 9 months previously he was at school still, lol. A series of exhibits had been arranged down int he hold so she arrived down there via the fast aircraft lift. He was one of those chosen to speak to her. As an aside.. he is a very good public speaker and in fact as part of his long held last career he did a presentation every single day for around 25 years.. I wonder if meeting the late Queen Mother honed his skills, lol.

Canada stopped being a dominion because it dropped the word 'Dominion' and is now a 'realm' under Charles III King of Canada. At confederation the term 'Kingdom' was considered but in part due to proximity to the USA this was considered inappropriate - however, Canada like the other 'Commonwealth Realms' are in effect kingdoms like the United Kingdom with their own crowns.
His Majesty, George VI's grandson, reigns separately in each realm.
    Must be exhausting...😮

Thanks Connor, I enjoyed that. I knew about the 1939 visit, and had seen the odd clip but not as good a view was that. I suspect the aim was to create goodwill, for the war which looked imminent.

I feel sorry for the poor sods from the Secret Service, having to run alongside the cars in 90degree heat, and yes Connor, that is who the airport is named after. There're statues of both Washington and Lincoln in London dating from 1921 and 1920 respectively. Because Washington said he'd never set foot on British soil, the soil it stands on was shipped over from Virginia to make sure he didn't tell a lie! There are 4 other statues of U.S. presidents in London, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Regan.

A new Canadian royal title was proclaimed on January 8, 2024 which removed references to the UK & Defender of the Faith.
    So Now, in Canada
    the Royal Title is:
Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King of Canada and His Other Realms And Territories. Head of the Commonwealth.

It is still the Dominion of Canada which remains the country’s formal, if seldom used, national title, as under the Constitution Act, 1867. The king was visiting the US, as king of this northern realm and was accompanied by the Canadian Prime Minister of the day, MacKenzie King, not the British PM. At 7:07 of your video you can see him on the stairs behind and to the right of the King

I’m pretty sure that 1982 with the 2nd amendment to the treaty of Westminster if I’m quoting it correctly Canada official name is no longer the dominion of Canada which I am sad about but apparently it’s not legally the case anymore

  • @crossleydd42

It is Pathé (Pathay) and the visit was in early June 1939. The war started on September 3rd. It's hardly likely that the king would go to the US when the war had started and run the risk of being torpedoed! Commercial flying of the Atlantic had not quite happened at that stage!

    • @mariahoulihan9483

incorrect. Alcock and Brown made the first non stop trans-atlantic flight in 1919.

    • @crossleydd42
      @crossleydd42 Месяц назад

@@mariahoulihan9483 I think you've taken me too literally, as I meant commercial flying, which the King & Queen would have used as passengers. A & B's 1900 mile flight in 1919 was a remarkable achievement, considering the Wright Brothers first flight just 16 years before was just 120 feet, with Louis Bleriot flying one of his planes roughly 21 miles across the English Channel in 1909.

I'm just watching your reactions now and I'll just quickly suggest that FDR is also supported by an admiral with a discreet hand on the arm. Canada is actually still formally designated a Dominion a term that has been largely discontinued since the 1960s. But here as now, an independent nation state and constitutional monarchy. Now, back to our program - it was a hot day in Washington...
