    Another excellent video. Love your work. Just a question about this. What did it cost you to build it and are you going to sell plans on how to construct it? I couldn't get over how quiet it was and efficient at removing waste. Many thanks. Chris.

      Hi Chris and thank you, I will do plans once I know everything is ok with it. I haven't worked out the cost as yet but the thing is with this filter, there are a lot of parts where you can save money. Thanks, Terry.

      Hi Chris, The RDF is on my pond as we speak, and has been running for just a week. I have to say it's going better than I ever imagined. I did have a bit of a disaster for a start. I moved my Pro system on to my patio and set it running so I could run it while I re-plumbed the shed for the rdf. I got the moving bed installed and then the rdf which took about a week. I think I must have got a bit excited about turning the rdf on lol. When I was ready for the big turn on, I just turned off the pump to the Pro system, went in the shed and turned on the rdf. I must have stood watching the rdf for about 30 minutes. All was fine. Went to look at the pond and I couldn't see my fish. I've never seen my pond so dirty, and for a few seconds I couldn't work out what the hell had happened. Then it dawned on me. I just switched the Pro filter off, not thinking that I had no one way valve on the Pro filter, so it emptied all the dirt it had caught in just over a week back in to my pond. It took about 5 days and my pond is back to normal again. So I really put the rdf through its paces lol. I was a bit apprehensive as to whether it would be as good as the Pro system as that does take some beating. But as of this moment, it is defernatly on a level with the Pro system in performance. The bonus is, the dirt it catches is removed straight away whereas with the Pro and other filters, it sits in the filter for a week still polluting the water. Also I have no filters or media to clean now. There are a couple of things I want to change but there only minor things. I have to say I'm well impressed. Terry.

    • @chrisgreen1331
      @chrisgreen1331 7 лет назад

      I think it's outstanding the way you've made it from scratch. Your right about the drum removing the waste straight away. Are you going to run the drum leading into a moving bed? Or run it from drum into your pro system to increase filtration? Look forward to your next video buddy. 😀

    Hi Terry, cant wait for your rdf plans and more videos, checking 2-3 times a day, to see if anything has changed. Last year made the pro and is best filter I have ever used, for years I have not had clear water, I am planning a rdf to go with the pro system which will be above the pro system and to have 2x fluid ki chambers. for extra filtration.All I can say is brilliant, Regards Chris.

      Hi Chris and thank you, very much appreciated. I will try to put a small video together as everybody is waiting for one. The thing is, as always I want this filter the best it can be before I release the plans. The mechanics of the rdf are spot on and ready to go. I just want to try an even finer mesh than I'm using now to be sure we've got the best. Trouble is its £75.00 a go lol. Anyway I have ordered finer mesh so as soon as I've given that a go I will release the plans. Thanks again, Terry.

    @RORY01014 7 лет назад

    Hi Terry,
    Awesome build! Very impressive :)
    I installed an AEM drum filter for a friend and RDF'S are amazing, one thing that seems to help (you might find this useful) is if you put an airstone in the first section where the inlet is, it stops rubbish settling in it and ensures it goes into the drum.
    This is very well timed, I'm planning on rebuilding my grow-on soon and would love a drum, but can't afford one.
    I presume it would be easy to make it gravity fed, just get a float switch which works the other way in the clean side and have 110mm inlet/outlets
    Hope it all goes well!

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  7 лет назад +1

      Hi RORY01014, That's a good idea. I was messing about yesterday trying to put a T on the inflow to stop the dirt from settling. I haven't tried it as a gravity fed filter, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Thanks mate, Terry

    • @RORY01014
      @RORY01014 7 лет назад

      I hope it helps!
      I imagine gravity fed the water would be set so that it is just under the guttering, and the float switch would trigger if the water level drops on the clean side of the drum. Maybe I will be the Guinea pig for it! :)
      Looking forward to seeing the plans and a rough build cost, hopefully I can then downsize it slightly and give it a go!

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  7 лет назад

      Hi mate, I would just have the water level in the filter equal to the water level of the pond and pump from the clean water side. I would have a check valve in the pipe to the filter so you were able to turn the water off if needed. Terry.

    • @RORY01014
      @RORY01014 7 лет назад

      Sorry that's what I meant, (the drum's height would be set so the water level (pond level) is under the gutter and you would have the normal slide or ball valve on the inlet and it then feeding a bio chamber of some description and have the pump after that :)
      Basically it would be a combi drum.
      The possibilities are endless! Very excited to get started now
      Thanks
      Rory

  • @shanesnow8309
    @shanesnow8309 6 лет назад

    I wonder if you could eliminate the need for the belt driven system by utilizing a water jet, powered by the water pump, to turn a paddle wheel of some sort that would be attached to both sides of the drum - perhaps by adding two more water jets to each end of the cleaning jet system? Nice work! Really enjoy your videos!

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  6 лет назад

      Hi Shane, Thank you for your nice comments and input. That's good thinking. I have thought about it, but I don't think you would generate enough power from the jets to move the drum. When the drum is half submerged in water it does take quite a bit of turning. Plus as it turns it has to lift the wet dirt out of the water and round to the top. That's one of the reasons I went for a wiper motor, as they've got quite a lot of torque for a small motor. Thanks again for the input. If you think of anything else give me a shout. I love to listen to ideas. Terry.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  6 лет назад

      Hi Dennis, Thank you. Hope your well mate. This is the time of year for spawning, especially now the pond water has warmed up. spawning mats and mops can be made of many things. You can buy spawning mats and brushes. Your best bet is to have a look here on RUclips, there's loads of ideas here. The main thing is your water quality, it has to be good for them to spawn. When they start spawning it can be very early morning, maybe still dark. Trouble is once they start spawning, the others will start to eat the eggs and they will eat them there selves if left. So don't be too long in getting the eggs out if you want to keep them. Just make sure whatever you use is fish safe and not been in contact with any chemicals. Hope this helps mate.

      Hi Andre, The main part to find would be the drum ends. You can use 450mm drain pipe if you have it there. The rest is washing machine parts and a wiper motor. I bought everything new and it cost me £550.00. This was the next video: ruclips.net/video/YHQnm4lsGeA/видео.html Terry.

    Great job on the RDF Terry. That's the mechanical filtration taken care of; are you going to plumb it up to flow through your Pro midi filter for the biological action to take place or do you have another plan?

    Really nice job. What is the size of the mesh? I tried 100 mesh stainles but the problem is after a while I have to take it out and pressure wash it as it gets clogged.

    • @ItsAlleged
      @ItsAlleged 7 лет назад +1

      I've only seen these radial filters in videos, and don't have one myself. However, I do know that drip irrigation filters use 200 mesh. I would guess that a pond would use the same or even wider than a filter for "tap water." I would guess something closer to 400 would still be plenty fine

    • @artashesharutyunyan3693
      @artashesharutyunyan3693 7 лет назад

      I have a 350m. stainless steel and have to tell you the tap water does not go through if don't pressurize it. And in my case it is gravity system. So I had to reduce to 100. Now, every time I need to clean I am using pressure washer :)
      Other then that I am very happy. I just put the mesh under angle and let the water go by. Will have to take some time to take a video.

      oh wow I must be confused. I was under the impression that the mesh number referred to microns. meaning a higher number is more open and "free flowing"

    Your filter drum and your water pipe bringing water into the filter: why did you not make an end wall to your rotating durn with a hole in it in the center for your support board and your water pipe to go through, that was higher than the water level inside your filter ? Then your water coming into the filter would not leave trash inside your square box that had to be occasionally cleaned. If your water pipe that dumped water to be filtered, was able to have all that water remain inside your rotating drum to be filtered through the screen before it could get to the bottom of your square box, you'd rarely have to take the drum out of the box to clean the box.
    Other than that, I like your build of that filter. What did they total build cost you for that filter?

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  7 лет назад

      Hi, I've not yet worked out the cost as I'm still tinkering around with it. but I must admit I am very pleased with it as I expected more teething problems than I got as there's quite a lot of mechanics involved. I don't get much dirt settle in the first chamber now as I have a small aquarium air pump and a couple of air stones both sides to keep the dirt from settling. Thanks for the input. Terry.

    wow you don't stand still when it comes to filters my friend.
    I built your filter system with the good old three drums last year now you've got it down just one.
    It looks and sounds like your onto a winner. Are you intending to run it along side your existing filter system or will that become redundant?

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  7 лет назад

      Hi Bernie, I can't resist a challenge lol. I won't run both, but it has got to be good to replace the Pro system. I am going to give it a try on the pond and see how it goes. I have had to build a moving bed to go with it so were down to 2 tubs lol. I have to say it worked better than I ever imagined and it's the fact that none of the dirt stays in the filter like all other filters and it's self cleaning. I do love my Pro system though so it's going to be a hard decision. Terry.

    • @berniessparrow6728

      I must admit I do love my Pro system. It's not put a foot wrong in 2 years and always given me fantastic water. But then this filter does look really good and has one or two improvements on the Pro system. There's no cleaning for a start, and also the captured dirt instantly goes out of the filtration system and does not sit in it for days like the Pro. If I don't get the gin clear water like I have with the Pro I will bring the Pro back. Thanks Richard, Terry.

      Hi Richard, I moved the Pro out of the shed and put it on the patio and set it up to keep the pond filtered while I re-plumbed the shed for the RDF. Got the RDF installed, switched the Pro off and went to start the RDF. Switched on and all was running well. went to look at the pond and you couldn't see the fish, the pond was full of dirt. It was then I remembered I had no one way valve on the Pro and all the dirt it had caught went back into the pond lol. Never see my pond so bad lol. so the RDF had a right job on form the word go. It's been on the pond 2 days now and has it just about got it cleared up. Apart from that mate which was totally my fault, its going really well and I'm really pleased with it. Thanks Terry.

      might be true, there isnt much to the filter build, other than being able to messure and cut the stuff in the the right sizes, and that is really not an issue for me.. but at the moment I do not have time to focus on a build like this for the time it take to make one.. maybe one day Ill do on, unless I figure out how to make a more cleaver setup.. yet, I dont think there are many filters that can out perform the drum filter..
      - yet, if you want a crystal clear lake, I think adding a papir roll filter after the drum would be an awesome combination..

I'd also have to add some structure to the outside as it's only 9mm and would need help to stop it bowing. The case I build was less than £100.00. Thanks for the idea though mate, it's good to know.
