Makes sense. Modern body armor and the proliferation of IEDs in modern warfare has made it more likely that a soldier may lose a limb rather than their life, so there's certainly a market now for affordable prosthesis that are also as functional as the lost limb. Also, just wanted to point out that the Egyptians believed you could not enter the afterlife without a whole body, hence why if the mummy was missing a limb, they were fitted with a prosthesis.

Being an amputee post-birth must be far worse than being born without a limb. I was born with half of my upper arm amputated; but that's me, who I've been my entire life. But people who lost their limbs in war or in accidents had that their entire life. I was born whole, in my mind. But these people have lost one or two or even three of the most precious gifts given to them by birth.
Even I wish I could lock my hands together, even I wish that I could feel and touch with another hand. But to lose that, having it their entire lives, being apart of their whole selves, is unimaginable, even for me.
TicTacYo100 I was born with a deformed leg that was amputated at 17 months...There were times in my life I would have given anything to know what it was like to have both legs. I do see your point and believe it takes more effort for a person to recover "post birth"
You are absolutely right. I lost my lower limb at the age of 20 and it was above knee amputation. First I struggled then later on I heard and saw the progress that companies made in the prosthetics field. Now I am whole with my prosthetic limb and crutches. Sometimes I think about my leg but I am mostly adjusted to the situation by now.
@@nithingovind5068 I'm sorry if I'm being insensitive, but I'm curious. Are you and TicTac able to use prosthetics, or no? The reason I ask is because I've heard that one needs to have a good amount of muscles in, say, the forearm/calf for them to use it, and it would be fascinating to see if you guys were able to develop your muscles enough to use one. Again, I mean no offense, and I'm sorry if I've caused any.
@@vizunalvarez883 I am able to use prosthetic and it was difficult at first. The muscle atrophies and wastes away during the recovery period after the surgery. At first you can't even support your own weight with the prosthetic. But slowly after daily practice the muscles regain strength.

Left, because he wouldnt carry his shield in the right hand.
Even if he was born lefthanded he would be brought up
as a right habnded man because of superstition.

I plan to go into R&D on prosthetics and other bionics, and this video really helped to bring up some more "obscure" times in its development, very cool thank you!
the way to control a prosthetic with your brain might be due to a special glove that detects the movements of your current limb and copies it to the prosthetic in real time. or with a implant in the brain that connects to the limb as if you never lost that limb in the first place.

One thing... it is a prosthesis. You may have a prosthetic limbs, but the noun is actually prosthesis. The term 'prosthetic' being used as a noun instead of an adjective is common and drives me crazy.

"Götz von Berlichingen" also known as "Götz of the iron hand", a german knight is a good example of how good a prophetic could be even in the middle ages. He had 2 hands made by a village blacksmith, the first one (1510) beeing more simple in design to just lock the grip around objects. The second one though was very ahead of it's time, with each joint beeing able to move independently and lock in position, granting him the abillity to hold a sword, hold the reins of a horse and most impressively even write.
Dude was an absolute madlad, lost his hand due to a cannonball, got inspired to carry on after seeing one of his soldiers continuing to fight despite having lost a limb. He received a holy bann (meaning anybody could do anything to him) twice, kind of invented the saying "kiss my ass" and took part in over 15 feuds as a mercenary. He even commanded a unit of peasants during the german peasants revolt and later claimed in front of a court that he was only trying to minimise the damage done by them.... which the court believed. And despite he died peacefully at the age of 81 in his castle.

It is cool to think that technology allows us to simulate movement through a prosthetic hand just by using your brain like you would move your normal hand.
While artificial limbs are not nearly as good as a natural one someday we might advance to the point where artificial limbs might become superior to natural ones. Think about it, a hand with additional functional fingers or an eye that can improve low light vision and zoom in to make faraway objects clearer.
I think we have already reached it. We have people who lost legs and get stick-like legs that make them faster. And some prosthetic arms can carry far heavier things but are being advanced.
@@samuraijackoff5354 artificial limbs are still a little slow and don't have the reaction time of say a natural hand, but I think one day we'll get there and then exceed it. Someday losing a limb will not be a disability but an advantage.

Man. Im a double partial foot amputee (double chopart) and I gotta say that I was dismayed seeing that my particular prosthetic has gotten only a single bump in development between the 1700s and 2015 (mad max style brace to AFO style braces).
Unfortunately, 98% of people that lose the fronts of their feet are really unhealthy diabetics with poor prognosises, so there is not much incentive to develop something new.
It would have been preferable to have continued burning to death.
the problem with the early prosthetics is that you weren't able to kick with a false leg if you lost your leg above the knee, or throw a punch with a fake arm for a above the elbow amputation. they just hang there like as if they were paralyzed, the thought of controlling robotic limb is awesome I always imagine someone controlling a robotic arm to flip someone off.
Disney animatronics were incredible way back in early 1970s. I saw Abraham Lincoln stand up, give a speech, blink, blink, wave etc and I couldn't help but think why this amazing machinery, this lifeline animation wasn't used to he people who need prosthetics?

Forgot to mention. That some of this Prosthetics limbs are so expensive that its gonna cost you an arm and a leg.

Yes. Bring tired means that your body has used to much of its energy to continue.
If you're referring to the painful feeling you get in your feet after walking too much, then also yes. The prosthetics still push against your body. But while your feet are designed to carry a human's weight, most other parts of the body are not.

While i see that specificaly working on improving the life of people who lack such limbs brings in certain things, i think if we focus on making better limbs as a whole. Ones wich are superior to that of the original ones, and use a base version of that as what people with less limbs get ... essentialy more easily comercializing that entire system for everyone alot more progess could potentialy be made. Now like i said ... that is what potentialy could happen so dont come and say somethings on the line of "Supid, thats not how things work" because i know that they dont. Not in a world with Humans.
why would anyone want to get a mechanical limb, that allows them to feel pain through said limb, i don't see how that is a benefit.
Pain is sign that something was wrong and part of the human experience. Without pain you wouldn’t feel imagine not feeling your limbs but you are still standing with a invisible feeling leg.
if they evolve to the point of them being better than a organic limb (like it moves and you can feel with it and all that scifi stuff) I would get one
