  • Today I flew "low" or at least as low as is legal and comfortable in a Cherokee 140!
    Follow me on Instagram @FlyingGrimaud for video updates. Today I am flying Low and Slow in a Piper Cherokee 140. If Trent Palmer can do it in a Kitfox... I can't do it in a Piper Cherokee! :D MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW FAA REGULATIONS AND FLIGHT SCHOOL REGULATIONS! It is very important to know the area you are flying to and to flight plan before hand to make sure that you are flying within FAA Regulations. I checked with the FAR Aim as well as my Flight school before this flight.

      Shannon Whitaker Thank you for your service. I’m actually currently in ROTC. My grandpa flew F-4’s with the wild weasels in Vietnam and my dad was a T-38 instructor as well as flew C-130’s.

      That's correct. I received formal flight instruction from a Vietnam F-105/FAC pilot who flew missions over Hanoi and who also flew the Military FAC version of the Cessna 337. I was very fortunate and honored to receive military style training with the Col.(now deceased, RIP)
      One thing I liked about your video was flying "low" over the river. On my very first training flight "er mission" I was instructed to follow a winding-curving sandy beach river that's fairly wide. We dropped down low (on the deck low) and to me it was like a scene from the movie BAT21. For a second I thought the guy might be having flashbacks looking for VC or something. WOW that was crazy but what a blast !!! Evidently I did pretty good following the river as I got a nod of approval as we climbed back up to altitude. Later on I realized this was his way of seeing early-on if you were cut out for intense flying. Little did he know I'd been flying with my Dad since I was a toddler :)

    Great work young man! I own a Piper Comanche 400, and have over 6000 hours logged. I was a T-38 Instructor, as well as flew HC-130P's in the 17th Special Ops Squadron. To boot, my dad flew F-105 Wild Weasel's in Vietnam. Just wanted to say "keep up the great work!" You have a great head on your shoulders! I love to see young people keeping up the love of aviation! I like your enthusiasm for aviation no matter what you are flying. I live in the Kitfox world and knew Trent before
    he was “famous” thru RUclips. He loves aviation like you so you do have much in common. He loves to share that passion and since he is a pro videographer, sharing thru social media like youtube is natural for him. He does also have top notch video equipment. He has a great personality and conveys the joy of flight with thousands of people. He is the real deal. Same in person as in the vids.

    Nice job young man! Ignore the detractors. You were not really that low...which is good. Learn to fly like that the right way...gradually and carefully. If you can find a pilot with experience flying like that get some instruction from them. Flying low can be a blast but little margin for error. Look forward to seeing what you do next! Safe flying and happy landings.

      Hey, I’m starting my Student Pilot Training at Sundance. I’m interested in Video recording each of my flight lessons with my GoPro. Since you have this experience of flying their Cherokee’s, could you tell me if there are any GoPro mounts already in the aircraft like one behind the seat in the center?

    • @FlyingGrimaud
      @FlyingGrimaud  4 года назад

      Nicholas Rutledge Hey that’s great! Just be careful because the FAA is weird about student pilots recording. Just make sure you only record your dual flights and not the solo flights. As far as mounts are concerned, the places you can put them are limited since you don’t own the plane. If you owned it you could just buy a sticky mount and put one on the roof but since you don’t, you will have to use window mounts for the most part.

    Good video don’t worry about detractors just keep doing videos of things that interest you. To your question I am a pilot and own a share of a 172. If you find a couple of people to share the overhead costs it makes it much easier on the budget. Plus most GA planes sit far more than fly even with 3 owners.

      Thank you for sharing! I would love to do that as well but sadly I wouldn't be able to train in my own plane at the state school I fly at. Seems like you got some time in the Cherokee, what would you think of it as a backcountry plane for decently maintained dirt and grass strips? I’m looking at a 180 for here in Alaska, I want something I can train in but also load a friend or two in and go camping, but then also on the weekends fly the 600 miles home if I feel like to see my family. Performance wise they seem relatively fast, good useful load, but rugged enough to handle something less than paved.

    • @FlyingGrimaud
      @FlyingGrimaud  5 лет назад

      Trace Mitchell Here is what I will say, I now fly Cessna 172’s at college and if you want something that has enough power, useful load, and can handle a lot, the Cessna is the way to go. The Cherokee can either fit one friend, and camping gear, or you can have two friends and no gear. It’s a great trainer and it definitely can take a beating, but the Cessna has a lower stall speed, it is about the same cruise speed if not a tad bit faster, and since it is a high wing,I am not as concerned with landing in rough areas. I hope this answers your question; although, I think the Cherokee is more fun!

    • @tracemitchell7358
      @tracemitchell7358 5 лет назад +1

      FlyingGrimaud the reason I leaned to the Cherokee is the 180hp engine and that my experience has been most 172 are utility categories killing their UL from 1000+ to 800lbs it seems like the Cherokee 180 tends to push by in speed usually and UL, with a roughly 1200lbs UL. I started flying here in 172s and they’re of course a great airplane but the other problem with them is they have jumped big time in price recently a good looking Cherokee is 30-40,000 a same quality 172 seems to run 50+. Thanks for the info though, and as for the stall speed I might throw a VG kit on, haha, should bring the stall speed in line with the 172. We will see what happens though!

    • @FlyingGrimaud
      @FlyingGrimaud  5 лет назад

      Trace Mitchell Awesome! I learned in a 140 so I don’t have any experience with a 180. But both are great planes. The Cherokee is more fun and I personally find more enjoyable, so if the price is right and the 180 has the power you need, definitely go for it! Let me know which one you go with (if either).

    • @milesclassen5768
      @milesclassen5768 5 лет назад +1

      I have a Cherokee 180 with a Robertson STOL kit and a climb prop. It climbs great. They seem to handle a maintained grass/dirt strip with ease. But I wouldn’t want to do anything too rough in it. It’s still a tricycle gear with a heavy nose due to the 180 HP engine.

    • @FlyingGrimaud
      @FlyingGrimaud  5 лет назад +1

      Miles Classen Awesome feedback, I would love to fly a 180. I fly a Cessna 172 now and I would love to switch back to a Cherokee at some point. The Cessna is great but I think I would prefer a Cherokee 180.

      Harris_Carvel Sounds like a great time to me. You won’t see me doing that in the cherokee rental but one day when I own my own plane, I will likely be joining ya on the fun!

      Harris_Carvel Well I suppose you can do what you wish but I must say that doesn’t seem like the best decision.

    Making a claim like you have in your title is a great way to shoot your channel in the face. You’ve got a long way to go to even THINK about comparing yourself to Trent Palmer. Maybe start with quality before making claims. Lol.

      Bradley Ensminger Thank you for the input, I didn’t even consider comparing myself to him. Just trying to get noticed. But I will take that into consideration and change the title. Thank you.

      Bradley Ensminger If anything I meant it as a means of appreciation and not the opposite.

      Naa man it's your Channel and we obviously know you can't fly like Trent in a 180. Ignore the haters who don't have any videos !! Keep it up !!

      Shannon Whitaker I appreciate it. And I was thinking about it, it isn’t me trying to imitate Trent Palmer, it is just that I recognize his name carries meaning and with RUclips without key words, it is difficult to get discovered so if anything I used this title out of respect. I appreciate it.

      Come on man ? Boring ? Trent started out the same way flying around in a "Boring" Cessna 172 I believe. I watched the video for what it is and he's doing a very good job.... NO excellent job.
      People out there who want to fly like Trent Palmer need to realize that this is the type of flying you'll have to do to get a licence that enables it.
      I watched a couple of your videos and well...I'll just leave it at that....lol

      B Pace Instead of just saying boring, I would love to here what you would like to see for me to improve for next time. Thank you for watching however and hope you return.

      Shannon Whitaker Thank you I appreciate that. It is a lot more work than it looks to video and fly at the same time.
