The combination of Johnny Marr on the guitar and Morrissey singing is almost magical. One of those perfect partnerships that just worked. Neither ever managed to do much with impact without the other.
Late 80s, listened to alternative radio station in Los Angeles quite a bit. Depeche Mode and The Smiths were the 2 groups I remember being played frequently. If you were tuned in to alternative music in that era, you certainly knew The Smiths. But much like early Sinead OConner, great alternative appeal that was ignored by mainstream…
The Smiths were the band you listened to when you needed a reminder that other people in the world were more miserable than you were. When you're ready for more from The Smiths check out some of these tunes -- "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out", "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "What Difference Does It Make?", "Still Ill", "This Charming Man", "This Night Has Opened My Eyes", "Reel Around the Fountain", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" and more.
This song changed the music listening trajectory of my life. It was 1985 and it was so different from anything I had heard. I started listening to WFNX in Boston because they were playing it the most. Suddenly, I was alternative.
This was actually popular in the Dance clubs in San Francisco in the mid 1980's. One of my favorites. Also "Shoplifters of the World" and "Please, Please, Please" and more. I have their "Louder than Bombs" album.
Saw Johnny Marr at the Isle of Wight festival a couple of months back - amazing - he also played a couple of songs there with the Pretenders (he was briefly a member of that band also….)
Those opening notes are like time travel for me. I was just heading into my teens, growing up in Bolton and Manchester - this is the sound of my youth. My big brother introduced me to them - he went to some of their early gigs before they released their first album
Epic song. Morrissey and The Smiths are so good at combining humor and depression. LOL Check out some of their other songs. Even their song titles are funny. For example: Hairdresser on Fire and Girlfriend in a Coma.
See also You're The One For Me Fatty and We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful - I think those might be Morrissey solo songs, but in terms of words and titles, it comes to the same thing.
Hey JMBoy, yes, I loved this song and used to blast it from my car back in the day. I'd love to have you react to Love and Rockets, either of these songs studio versions. Kundalini Express (look for the one that is 5:49 in length; or Yin and Yang the Flowerpot man (look for the one that is 5:30 in length). I think you will like them as they are pretty unique across their 7 albums.
The Smiths, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. This was a truncated version, you missed him whistling! There Is a Light That Never Goes Out is the next one for you - if you haven't already. Doomy romanticism with a sharp wit. Quintessential Smiths.
I haven't read any comments about the term 'son and heir'. Myself and many other's thought it was 'sun and air'. It sounds silly now. Anyway, he's obviously saying that he inherited his shyness (and nothing in particular)
the Smiths rule. supposedly the band members hated this video. johnny marr is the guitarist and andy rourke bassist who recently died. a brilliant cover is by Love Spit Love which a post Psychedelic Furs band (or band on a break actually) with richard butler lead vocals. it was used for the tv show charmed and as i love richard butler i love their version, just a little rougher but great vocals. check out.
One of their very best - even the edited version you listened to! - and yet, an atypical example of their style i.e. doesn't much resemble any other song in their catalogue (lyrical content aside).
What do you get when you mix The Smiths and NewOrder? Electronic - raise the pressure ( yes its an album I cant pick a fav song on their so listen to entire alnum)
I like it when a movie does that - uses just one artist's or group's music. Kenneth Branagh did that with his brilliant movie, Belfast. Only Van Morrison songs.
One of the best songs ever recorded

wow the Smiths. Talk about a huge band that many don't know about.
They really did an insane amount of great work.

Can't tell you how many times I danced to this in the 80's

"Bigmouth Strikes Again" is my favorite. That guitar sound!!!
Thanks for the great reaction, please do MORE SMITHS! From a happy new subscriber from Australia!

The model is to die for!
They have a completely unique sound on every level, as for lyrics.....What you said sums it up fine.
This literally stopped me dead in my tracks the first time I heard it.

They have a ton of great tunes

A BLAST FROM THE '80S PAST!
Those opening notes are like time travel for me. I was just heading into my teens, growing up in Bolton and Manchester - this is the sound of my youth. My big brother introduced me to them - he went to some of their early gigs before they released their first album
Wow...taking me back to my teenage days❤

@@TheoZoffrok My favorite Morrissey solo career video/song is I Have Forgiven Jesus.
@@324cmac Marvellous title again!
The Gothy alternative chicks loved this band and The Cure back in the days.
I was one of them!! Good goth times😂
80s Gothy alternative girl here, co-signing.
Late nineties goth girl here, danced till the world burned to this!
AND WE STILL DO!!!!
oh whow. Two pictures are a "video", too. Every day with RUclips I learn more and more.
Such an addictive song!
cannot go wrong with ANY smiths song.
I usually never watch these, but I loved your take man! I feel the exact same way about the lyrics, I think you nailed it. Keep on man!
This song is such a vibe. It got an almost like a vampire atmosphere to it, like it could have been a song on the movie Lost boys.
Check out the longer version sometime. ❤❤
Amazing, impactful song-first Smiths song I ever heard. Made me a lifetime fan-they are amazing.
This song could be 5 hours long as far as I am concerned !
I agree!
That's Mr. Johnny Marr on guitar - Still very much active
Fantastic live shows.
checkin in.. keep this fresh in your mind and go and watch love spit love how soon is now a cover which is as good as the actual song
I have been in love with that woman in the hate for 40 years.
Love
Such a cool song. I have their greatest hits album. They used a cover of it for the first " Charmed " tv series beginning credits.
that was sung by Love Spit Love, an offshoot band of the Psychedelic Furs, lead by Richard Butler. Brilliant cover.
i love your reaction!

In the 80s all the alternative girls loved The Smiths. Them and The Cure. This is a dope song though. Love that riff
Robert Smith would not want to mentioned with Morrissey, he really does not like him. But I completely get the tie-in between the two.
All the alternative girls had good taste
The Smiths, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. This was a truncated version, you missed him whistling!
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out is the next one for you - if you haven't already. Doomy romanticism with a sharp wit. Quintessential Smiths.
Wow
What a great song
It always reminds me of Charmed ❤
The smiths man, the greatest band of Manchester.
great song! Theme song for "Charmed" tv show...😁
Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick by Ian Dury and the Blockheads is an absolute must, one of the best bass parts in any song, ever.
Also, Dance of the Screamers
Also, ‘reasons to be cheerful part 3’ another great track by Ian Dury and the Blockheads
Such a mood.
Andy's bass though.
The Smiths finally broke the USA market. You're welcome. Signed.....Britain.
"There is a light that never goes" out next....loved this reaction thanks!
This version is funky
❤❤❤❤❤
This is the song that turned me on to alternative music
Here's a mood.
I haven't read any comments about the term 'son and heir'. Myself and many other's thought it was 'sun and air'. It sounds silly now. Anyway, he's obviously saying that he inherited his shyness (and nothing in particular)
When you say it's gonna happen now... but when exactly do you mean??
See I've already waited too long,,,
...and all my hope is gone!

Thank Roxy Music.
Not Sun and Air, but instead Son and Heir. This play on words is o e of the aspects that thisnsong great.
I suggest, the the from album soul mining
any song
Liz Alwardt . I think is the models name
I think The Killer only featured Smiths songs
I like it when a movie does that - uses just one artist's or group's music. Kenneth Branagh did that with his brilliant movie, Belfast. Only Van Morrison songs.
I wish that movie would have done better, because the who soundtrack was The Smiths and I watched it just for that.
If you going 80's, YOU HAVE GOT TO DO CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES BY THE CURE,!!!! Take this 52 year old woman's advice!!!!!
Meat is Murder ♡
Check.. last night I dreamt somebody loved me
How soon is now?
I am the son and heir of nothing… many say Sun or Air that is not correct
Just shut your mouth how can you say I go about things the wrong way, I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does.
that was horrible! why didn't you play the whole song?
