Got it back in 2000-2001, when we first got our Playstation, and it's always been one of my favorite JRPGs period. Wild Arms was my very very first JRPG, so I had it to be the first reaction I get out of you - and I'm so happy you like it, thank you! ♥ The game certainly has Western influences, it has guns and stuff xD And the Japanese "wilderness" normally means something like a "wasteland", so it goes in the landscape that you associate with Westerns :D
    And yes, the WA composer Michiko Naruke was absolutely inspired by Ennio Morricone! There is even a track in the game that uses a leitmotif from Morricone iirc; I know what to put on my list for at some point then 👀

  • @lorospact
    @lorospact 2 года назад +44

    Yeah, the Wild Arms soundtracks we DEFINITELY inspired by Ennio - you can hear it strongly in Wild Arms 1, and it persists through the entire series. As the series goes on, they start putting their own touches on it, but that... sense never really leaves. They actually did a remake of Wild Arms 1, I forget the specifics, but Wild Arms 1 was my FIRST Playstation RPG - I bought and played it while waiting for FF7 to come out, and I've stuck with the series ever since.
    Most people consider the first 3 games to be the best. The other thing about Wild Arms games is... they're all fairly DARK, with ancient and recent tragedies, usually ones that directly affect the main cast. At least one main character in one of the games starts the game as a prisoner, and another in a different game is dying of uncurbable fantasy tuberculosis. It goes on from there.

    • @geovaughan8261
      @geovaughan8261 10 месяцев назад

      The third game is something of a clever inversion of this: the main character starts out wildly and naively optimistic and, through harsh experience, slowly hones her idealism into something practical without losing sight of who she is.

  • @Reycied
    @Reycied 2 года назад +5

    Somebody (or multiple people) have probably answered this, but Wild Arms is a series of RPGs that blended two parts Weird West with a part each of Sci-Fi and standard JRPG fantasy. And they did it really well! The gameplay of Wild Arms, (PS1) WA2 (also PS1) and WA3 (PS2) still hold up today, and the first game also had a pretty good PS2 remake called "Wild Arms: Alter Code F". The titular 'arms' are really just guns, and they tend to have varying degrees of scarcity depending on the narrative. In the first game, for example, the lead protagonist Rudy was the only person with a gun, while in the third game every party member used some flavor of firearm.
    Also, yes, the soundtracks for the first three games in the series are all absolute bangers.

    Wild ARMs has always taken a very western fantasy, which compliments the music very well. The only one that's differerent from the rest *aesthetically* would be Wild ARMs 4, but still feels and sounds like an ARMs game. If you're curious, take magical weapons and sometimes mecha and throw it into a western setting. It's very fantastical and such a joy to play

    This song (and many other bgm played throughout the game) sounded very unique to my teenage ears when I first heard it many years ago. It's just different from other rpg musics I've heard--which tend to be orchestral, back then, or even up to now. I loved hearing the guitar, whistling, and the various instruments used in the song. This is one of my all time favorite RPGs ever. It's up there with many Final Fantasy games for me. If you want super strong Ennio inspiration, check out the world map theme.
    But what really sets Wild ARMS apart for me is always going to be the fact it had legitimately interesting puzzles. So many games are just hidden switch or find an item in the same room puzzles... but each character in Wild ARMS (the whole series really) has unique tools and you have to use them together to solve the puzzles. Like... A button might be unreachable, so you need to use Jack's Windmouse companion Hanpan to reach it, or buttons need to be hit at the same time, so you need to use Rudy's bombs, or a hidden clue is known only by an animal, so you need Cecelia to use her magic wand to talk to it... There's a lot more complex stuff than this. It's an amazing PS1 title.
    Also, I answer this question a lot: Jesse mentions the term "Spaghetti Western." I find a lot of people don't know what those are. They're Western movies like A Fist Full of Dollars and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, and A Few Dollars More that were filmed in Italy. Hence... Spaghetti... because it was a food commonly associated with Italy when these were filmed. Bonus fact, Fist Full of Dollars and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly are Western Versions of the Akira Kurosawa films Sanjuro and Yojimbo. Exact same plots. The Man with No Name is based on the Nameless Samurai played by Toshiro Mifune. I'm a huge Kurosawa fan... Anyway, back to Spaghetti Westerns... Duster Coats are characteristic. Also, in bar scenes, the bars only have whine bottles in the shelves, which they pretend is whiskey. This is in part because Whiskey was not popular in Italy when these were filmed and it was hard to get that much Whiskey so they just went with cheap Italian wines that would have fit the budget.

    By all means, open the floodgates for more Wild Arms tracks. The series has a great soundtrack. This one was the opening to the original Wild Arms for the PS1. Its remake, Wild Arms Alter Code: F, uses a different Intro, but the exact same song. Some songs of the series I can recommend: "Migrant Bird of the Wilderness" from WA1, "Destruction of all Creation" from Alter Code, "Battle vs Lord Blazer" from WA2, "Gunmetal Action" from WA3, "At the End of the Wilderness (Ver. Detonator)" from WA4, and "On the Day the Shovel Was Named Invincible" from WA5.

    I gotta check out WIld Arms for that western goodness it seems.
    One of my favorite Western inspired songs in VGM is Yasha's Theme "Wild Fang" and "Orphan Wolf Legend" respectively, from the game "Asura's Wrath".
    Super cool universe with a mix of sci-fi, Hinduism and the occasional western influence.
    The whistling with the guitar in those songs always makes me push for that last km when I'm out running and got seemingly nothing left in me, especially when the rhythm picks up, it's super potent in giving me that "I just rode on horseback for hours in the blazing desert sun, survived a shootout and now I just gotta get home in one piece" feeling. Dunno how else to describe it haha

    I think the idea of the setting for the Wild Arms games is that humans have travelled into space, colonised other worlds, but on this one, in particular, things have mostly regressed to a Wild West type era of culture and tech... Although they also have what we'd see as future or modern tech mixed in... And then there's also a fantasy element... Sometimes there are castles with knights or something... Usually the Wild West theme is the more prominent though...
    They are JRPGs, with turn-based combat and random encounters and such... But many dungeons also involve a bunch of puzzles that require certain special items, with each main character getting their own selection... Like maybe a throwing item that can hit switches you can't reach ...Maybe some sort of scanner that helps you find hidden switches... A variety of stuff... Maybe a little bit like a Legend of Zelda game puzzles maybe, but not quite.

    I ironically live streamed this here on RUclips around the time you uploaded this. Wild Arms is one of my all time fave RPG's and the music is one of the big reasons. The soundtrack and overall feel is very Sergio Leonne, check this game out in full if you can

    Hell yeah! Michiko Naruke is one of my favorite composers, and Wild Arms 2 is up there on my personal list of JRPGs, very nice.

    Holy shit when I saw and heard this video, I cried tears of nostalgia. I alwasy whistle along it. My childhood. I'm crying. As a child, I was always stuck somewhere at the beginning and had to ask my dad to do that part. Wild ARMs in general is soooo good! All games! My favorite are 3 and 1. Just sad there is nothing new. :(
    Hey, why not listening to something from Golden Sun? Felix or Jenna battle theme, Venus Lighthouse. There's also a Wild ARMs track called "Courage" (first dungeon) which is a different version from the Intro.

    Wild ARMs is a wild west themed jrpg, As to why it's named Wild ARMs, that is the name of the weapons used.

    Jesse, you need to check out the remix album Wild Arms Music the Best rocking heart. While I would tell you check out the individual OSTs of the games in the series, this album in particular is like a greatest hits of, but they remix the songs to have a hard rock/metal motif. In my opinion, the best of both worlds.

    I'm late as sin but Wild Arms is a series of JRPGs that mix Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Western into a single series that spanned the Ps1 and Ps2 era. Unfortunately the series was pretty much abandoned in the late '00s but you can find Wild Arms 3 on PsN for Ps4 and its the game that leans most heavily on the series western inspirations. Definitely 100% worth a play, and I'm not just saying that because the series is near and dead to my heart.

    Ennio Morricone was a god among musicians, maybe the best BSO composer that ever existed. His work for Spaguetti Westerns was Top tier, but even his other songs are master pieces, there are three songs in particular that stole my heart and my ears the very first moment I heard them: Deborah´s Theme from Once Upon a Time in America, C'Era Una Volta Il West from Once Upon a Time in the West and Love Theme from Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. That man was not just a composer, he touched your heart and soul with every note he played like no other, a Musician God.

    Loved Wild Arms great series. I still own digital copies. I want to make a recommendation. I know you covered a few Persona 5 tracks. I would be extremely shocked if no one recommended Life Will Change. This track is, imo, the funkiest track that just gets you extremely hyped. Check out Life Will Change.

    You also need to check out the ENTIRE soundtrack of the old Western first-person shooter game Outlaws from LucasArts. The soundtrack was overtly and intentionally styled after Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western soundtracks.

    arms is a therm in the game for firearms, which are considered "forbidden technology" and the wild is, well, my bet is, its a reference to wild west. since the game is set in a western setting.
    the game itself is a classic final fantasy style rpg. VERY early psx, as in, released before ff7 kind of early. its an amazing game, with a great story full of twists and drama. however, the sequel was even better in all aspects.
    the intro of WA1 is considered by many one of the best ops of the era, and even WA2 has 2 versions 1 for the jp with lyrics, and 1 for the western market that has no lyrics but is more orchestral. i still have no clear definition between which is better. as i love the us ver, but the lyrics are so well done that i cant just not pick it.
    as a side note another series that has amazing ops is the tales of series, all 3 on the psx are great. completely diferent style to this one, but still amazing in their own right(specially zestiria and innocence DS ver).
