there is a shit ton of everything in istanbul ... more tea is consumed daily than the rest of the Balkan peninsula ... most people think Brits drink a lot of tea ... and also is a fast food nirvana ...
When in Dubrovnik, whilst walking down an alley in the old city, I saw a women petting her two fat cats. A street cat then walked by, and the woman spat on it. It was a strange sight.
Ironically, that famous poet that got killed was an ethnic Serb from Dubrovnik, Milan Milišić. He had one very interesting connection to England: he, with his than wife Merry, translated Hobbit to Serbo - Croatian. It is widely regarded as one of the best translations from English literature to our language(s), in fact, reading it, it is hard to believe that it wasn't originally written in Serbian or Croatian.
+Miladin Ercegovcevic i am very familiar with Milan Milišić. i think on my father side we may be related to him somehow... we were ethnic Serbs living in Dubrovnik as well... my family also lived in Krajina tho...

I know that look after a bus night ride from Zagreb to Dubrovnik :) I grew up on an island near by Dubrovnik but went to university to Zagreb so I did a lot of those night rides. A lot. Thats where I left my youth, now people tell me that I look ten yers older than my age. Those bloody night buss rides, worst thing ever. and yes, including the french (btw that thing about Neum, im not quite sure that you were right about this, story goes that Dubrovnik republic ´´gave´´ that to the Otoman empire so they would make abuffer zone in betewn Dubrovnik republic AKA Ragusa and those blody Venitians. Dubrovnik republik liek Venetians as much as you like french) :)
The bit of Bosnian territory about which you didn't know called Neum is there because in the early 18th century Dubrovnik was in danger of having a border with then Venetian Dalmatia, with whom they were both trading and military rivals. Dubrovnik didn't like the idea of a Venetian land attack, so they struck a deal with the Ottomans, making them request Neum after a peace struck with Venetia and the Hapsburgs in 1718. Neum became a part of the Turkish province of Bosnia, so it stayed in Bosnian hands even after 1991.
Well, what I posted here is what's written in my history books and what's been told to me by people living in Dubrovnik (I'm Croatian). Anyway, I hope you have a nice time in Dubrovnik, the city is very rich in history and culture. Unfortunately, it is also very rich in turists, and the prices are unbelievably high, especially inside the walls (though I'm sure you know that by now).
Actualy that deal was null and void after Austro-Hungary conquered the area, and it stayed so even after it anexed the BiH. It was only during the SFRJ era that Tito decide that BiH should have it's own exit to the sea with a port - Ploče.
Tyrion is now thousands of miles from King's Landing. And by thousands of miles, I mean a little ways up the coast in Split, Croatia. (Although the fighting pit scene was shot in Spain, and most of the filming for warm climates in Season 6 will be in Spain.)
Some mayor mistakes in the video. Dubrovnik wasn’t part of the Ottoman empire, it was under its protection and therefore paid the Sultan. It also didn’t sell territory because of bad economy, which it nearly never had. It sold it to not have a land border with Venice that was a threat to Dubrovnik. And although Latin was the state language, Croatian was spoken in household and all day life. Same goes with Italian-Dalmatian later. Only the nobles were billingual and spoke it for trading purposes, the rest spoke Croatian. That’s why nearly all of Dubrovniks rich poetry and works were in Croatian. Dubrovnik was also not a vassal to Hungary, but the Magyar-Croatian king. In the Habsburg empire it became part of the Dalmatian province that was included into Croatia inside the monarchy. In Yugoslavia it was first oart of the Zeta banate and then the Croatian banate. In WW2 it was part of the Independent State of Croatia, in Yugoslavia part of the Croatian socialist republic.
Welcome back, Lindybeige. I actually wanted to ask, when you have time again, if you could actually do a video on the fighting in Game of Thrones (since you mentioned it in your video). I'd be curious to know what you think. I haven't seen anyone do an analysis of how good or bad it is (especially withe episode 9 of this last season). Well, just an idea to throw out there. I hope you do pick it up if you have time.
As a half-Croatian, It's nice to see you visit my motherland. Even nicer to see how Dubrovnik looks 10 years after I visited it last. It never crossed my mind that the city was used for King's Landing scenes!
They did not sell that part of the land to the Ottomans for the lack of money, they gave it away so that the Ottomans could protect their back against Venetian forces.
Back then a genious idea- give the ottomans a tiny piece of Land so you dont have a Landborder with Venice. Now we need to cross a border to get to our capital (by land). Oh and the last few years were building an expensive bridge.
I have found mid-November the time to visit the city, as the tourists are gone, and the city is getting ready to close its tourist shops. You get a more authentic feel of the city and share the street with mostly local people. One of my favorite cities in Europe.
Is there any place in Europe that isn't "rich in history"? Snarkiness aside, nice video, Lindy, always good to see what part of the world you're traipsing through.
What a coincident... I found this video and looked at the date and realised that I had been in Dubrovnik around the exact time that you would've been there considering the upload time.
Very cool, as usual :) Just for you to know, Lord Byron named it "the Pearl in the Adriatic" and Bernard Shaw said, "Those that seek paradise on earth should seek it in Dubrovnik".
Great to see you're back, Lindy. Congratulations on your 300th video! It would pretty neat if you could make a video or two about Game of Thrones in terms of "historical authenticity" (in quotes because it is a fictional setting after all, but it's inspiration from the War of the Roses and such is obvious). You know, do the fight scenes resemble what a duel or brawl would have looked like, sets and costumes and such.
Yay more travel videos.. I remember reading Lindy's website about the leather ancient Greek cuirass when I was about 13 trying to learn how to make bows and chainmail. He sure has done a lot of internets I am now 24
Thanks. Not dead is my preferred state of being. As is so very often the case, posts to which I wish to reply have no 'reply' button. The post before this one is about King's Landing. Landing sounds like London, much like Lannister sounds like Lancaster, and Stark sounds like York. GoT is a retelling of the Wars of the Roses.
Lindybeige However, neither the House of Lancaster nor the House of York seized the throne of England in the end - it was the House of Tudor. Now, which character's name sounds like Tudor? It's inevitable. Before the show ends, Hodor will sit on the Iron Trone. All hail king Hodor!
Have been to Dubrovnik 2 years ago. It's true the tourist density in the old town is very high but it is really beautiful! In fact almost no one lives there. It's all restaurants, museums hotels and shops.
History time! Great video, had no idea even the French held the place for a while. Your GoT reference was marvelous too, never watched (only read) the series so that was a complete surprise.
Wow, just after I have a dream about you being my out of school time history teacher, you upload a video that teaches me a little bit of history. You also promised to give me another lesson next wednesday in the dream.
Thanks, but no, the bus trip was horrible. Hardly slept a wink. Arrived and fell face-forwards onto my bed and woke up in the same position four hours later.
Dubrovnik was besieged by the Yugoslavian army under control og Milosevic and his Serbian generals, not by the Bosnians. The regular soldiers were still from all of the nationalities of Yugoslavia, including Croats. War errupted shortly in Bosnia as well, after the coallition government refused to take part in the aggression on Croatia and holding a refferendum for independence. Please correct this, sir! You of all should avoid inaccurate history :) Otherwise, keep up the good work! I hope you do a piece on Sarajevo or Mostar :)
You DO have places where the language changes in Britain. In Wales for example, Welsh was the dominant language until the late 19th century. Changing your language to that of the people with more power is something that has happened and continues to happen all over the world.
Excellent travelogue, just like many of your previous ones. :-) Even by the standards of southeast Europe, Dubrovnik has a very colourful and complex history as a city and a former polity. Look up the Republic of Ragusa, it's the sort of real historical stuff that one just can't make up...
Lindybeige, You should totally do a whole series on Game of thrones and where GRR Martin got his inspiration from historical events. I think you have the perfect expertise!
King's Landing is called King's Landing, because that's where Aegon the Conqueror first landed his fleet and built his first fort. I don't think it has much to do with London.
I dream of you getting funding to do a full documentary series on the history of the Mediterranean world. That would be a truly fascinating journey. Would this be something you would consider if the opportunity ever arose?
Regular bus from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, that's like 12 hours? Anyway Dubrovnik was kind of busy even before the Game of Thrones, number of cruise ship companies include it as a stop and pilgrims to Medugorje also stop there.
Some language pedantry for those who care: it's actually pronounced with the accent on the U (dùbrovnik), and Zagreb on the a (zàgreb). Source: am half croatian. We like to put the accent on the first syllable of even surprisingly long words, thus causing significant puzzlement to anyone who tries to come to terms with the language.
The part on the coast was actually given to Bosnia long after the time mentioned in the video and was given by the state, not Dubrovnik which was just a city not autonomy in the time. Happened during the last 100 or so years. Not before.
I'd be slightly wary of drinking from those fountains with or without any signs. It seems Dubrovnik and most of Croatia doesn't suffer from this, but in many regions around the Mediterranean it's not always completely safe to even drink tap water, let alone water from a random roadside fountain.

Interesting. That it was sold to the Ottomans for financial reasons rather than military came from Wikipedia, which is of course fallible.
