  • The Black Beauty: An Ultimate Joy Ride (Car from the 1966 T.V. Show The Green Hornet)
Back in 2010 I got the pleasure and Ultimate experience of going to a car show in South Carolina and meeting the owner of the #2 Car from the 1966 T.V. Show The Green Hornet called the Black Beauty. The car is owned by Karl Kirchner. We hooked up on making an in-car documentary on the making of the car at his home. To this day I'm the only person in the world who has ever made a documentary on the vehicle that actually got to sit in the front and back seats where Bruce lee and Van Williams got to sit from the show. So Honored to be able to do this. Here is the video I put together. My only regret is that I didn't shoot this in HD. I did all the graphics for the video too.
Back in the day (2008-2013) I had a video editing and production company called SEFX3D Films. SEFX3D stood for Special Effects in 3D. I was a freelance video producer and editor as well as doing graphic design work. When I gave up that aspect of my work I took all the videos that I produced on RUclips under that name and got rid of my website sefx3d.com. I also worked for BigImpactFilms.com as an editor for Paul Prewitt doing PPV T.V. programing. I decided it was time to show off what I can really do to my audience and subscribers in hope of MAYBE someday getting back to expanding my work offerings. Hear are some samples of work that I have done in the past. Some of them I'm quite proud of.
    ENJOY!
    John

Green hornet was on Friday nights on ABC from 730 to 8 PM. I would always watch that just before Time Tunnel, which was from 8 PM to 9 PM. I was 11 back then when it came out in 1966.
BTW, at 7:33, did I hear that right “now listen to me, Trump?“ It was the voice of one gangster talking to another gangster. How eerily prophetic!

@@flatlineracer3207 I also liked that the highly equipped car was one that could blend in. I used to have the Corgi "Black Beauty." It could launch a replica of the scanner from its trunk and weapons were hidden by pivoting front panels. I don't remember now if they were spring loaded missiles or simulated guns. I gave my die cast car collection to a younger kid when I thought I had outgrown it.

Oh from one of the biggest fans of the show I thank you! I was a future car nut at 10 years old in 1965. But my wonderful Dad was also the proud owner of a 64 Imperial Crown Coupe, in a beautiful metallic turquoise with unusual black vinyl roof, I say unusual because of the grain molded into the vinyl material of which I’ve never seen since, that’s also very hard to describe. With the softest black leather interior I’ve felt since. Dad and I took many rides together, we made a game out of who could hear an outside noise as the car was so quiet, plus fast, not so quick, but once moving at 30 mph Dad could “kick it down” into first gear and that big car would take off, doing at least 90 before up shifting into third. Dad always let off at one hundred though and never on the snow tire he would add in the winter to get around in that car was a tank, especially when he added tire chains. We lived at the top of a long two part hill that was an S curve, so you could not just get a running start straight up. But he had what his Marine buddy who owned the dealership called Trac Lock I believe, or posi track, all I know is one night he was able to get home in 12” snow storm. We all got a kick out of the fact later on that Imperials were banned from demo derby’s! Because they were so overbuilt.

I saw the original, unreleased, pilot at the Preview House on Sunset with the Mid Valley YMCA Indian Guides. PH often solicited local youth groups, Scouts, and such as lab rats for test marketing of proposed TV productions.

Green Hornet reruns were not syndicated in my region so unlike it’s contemporary Batman, I never saw it as a kid in the 70s/80s. Still have never seen the show. Another classic we didn’t have was Lost In Space for some reason. We had all the rest though.

@@mattskustomkreations - I had the same issue with Green Hornet. I'd never heard of it until Seth Rogan was making the 2011 movie of it, and only then did the SciFi (Now SyFy) Channel air the episodes from the TV show. I probably would have loved it had I seen it in the 80s when I was a kid.

@@mattskustomkreations The episodes appear to all be here on RUclips if you want to check them out. As far as I can tell there is no origin story episode, though I haven't watched them all. It just dumps you right in with no explanation of how they all got together or who built the car and gadgets. IMDB shows that all but two episodes are rated at at least a 7.0 and I'd say that's pretty good for a 60s TV series. I've seen at least eight of the first nine episodes and they're reasonably good.

@flatlineracer3207 unfortunately GH never got the syndication time that Batman did. I was that wierd kid that liked GH over Batman but to be honest 2 of the shows that helped make me the nerdy man of culture I am today GH and Man From UNCLE I cannot remember seeing in rerun once they left the air until METV added GH to part of it's Scifi Saturday Nights and MFU to their Spys Who Love METV block years ago.
Was less that pleased with the GH movie as well but helps to look at it as millionaire playboy late 60s= sauve, debonair, classy. Millionaire playboy late aught = obnoxious asshat jackwagon.
It did win a few redemption points in that the look of both Hornet and Kato were preserved, Beauty was easily identified as such with some definite improvements ( and some detractions) and the beautiful homage to a classic episode. Sad thing is if they could have played down the trademark jsckassery a bit more it may have been able to move on beyond an origin story.

Fantastic resource material for builders of the old Aurora/Polar Lights ( now Round 2) 1/32 scale plastic kit and the just released new tooling AMT (now also Round 2) 1/25 kit. Curious if you're buying one (or more like me!) I noticed car #2 had the George Barris graphic touches or mods but was taken back to the Dean Jeffries/TV show spec. That answers the debate you didn't cover in detail of how George claimed he designed and built the Black Beauty when actually he put his graphics or mods on Jeffries work for the custom car shows circuit back on the day. There was enough promotion by Barris he built a "Black Beauty" to create the confusion that there was a 3rd car. Your video including the restoration documentation proves there was only 2. It is now part of my RUclips Saved Library. Thank you again! Congrats on your new Ghoul Car Comic books! IDK which I'd choose but I may seek to buy one or more in the future!
